My first trick-or-treater was horrible. I mean really rude. Not only did he not have a sack or a real costume or say trick or treat or thank you when I gave him candy, but when I opened the door he asked what took me so long! WTAF?
In good news, the next kid was my adorable neightbor dressed as a mariachi, and every kid since has been delightful. I always compliment their good manners loud enough that their parents can hear. Ds2 once told me that the way I compliment good manners made such an impression on him, and I told him parenting is hard and parents need all the proof of good work they can get!
I told a pack of six young teens, who have been by twice, that if they come back at 9 I’ll dump my bowl in their bags. I have a soft spot for teen boys who could be doing all kinds of things but choose to trick-or-treat.
Just found this thread. We were at a party dressed as a Freudian slip and a chip monk (that’s a computer chip on the front of the costume.) There was a vote and mine won for funniest.
one of my grandkids, who was dressed as a slice of pizza, cut short his trick or treating so he could watch the final wnba game. He is 5. That was not the choice I would have expected. They hung a sheet and displayed the game in the neighborhood. The one kid watching - him.
We did not have many children at all, I would say less than 30. Our newest neighbors had a pizza party for their young children and friends, then they all got in their cars and drove elsewhere for trick or treat! I always give out full size candy bars and added ring pops (thank you, Costco). I have a lot of candy left over.
Initially we were going to sit out front of our house (no porch) but our first trick or treater was a youngish teen and his date who while driving by, thought I should deliver candy to their vehicle. Uh, no. I think this was probably our last year.
I went ToT with GDs at Park Slope. It was just a huge block party. People had DJ and streets were blocked off. D1 had a pizza party by their stoop. GD1 was very happy passing candy out. The weather was great for it
Went through almost 2 Costco bags, started at 3, bub8:30 no more. Bowl got dumped twice, the first time I was able to at least yell profanities at them.
I handed out candy with my D’s mother-in-law. We’re all in the same small MA town where all the kids go to the houses around the Town Common. (There are long driveways and few sidewalks in our town.) People can donate candy and take it to the town hall building and then these candies get distributed to the houses around the center. I bought extra bags of candy (used my CVS extra care coupons for the first time in a long time) and so did D’s MIL. Trick or treating was from 5 pm to 7 pm, but there were early birds and late birds and we probably had kids coming around until 8 pm. All in all we distributed 1400 pieces of candy (we kept the empty bags). We asked kids just to take one piece so we wouldn’t run out (we almost did). Most of the folks who distribute the candy will decorate their houses and some really go all out. Most kids were polite and said thank you and most kids asked how many pieces of candy they could take and followed the rule. The most popular candies were Sour Patch and Reese’s Take 5.
We had less kids this year despite there being a lot more kids in the neighborhood now than when my kids were growing up here. Someone started organizing a party at our neighborhood beach a few years ago, so I think a lot of the little ones go there for pizza/candy then only hit a few houses b/f going home. We set up a firepit on our dead-end street with our neighbors and probably had about 30 kids. We thought with it being perfect weather as well as a Saturday night, there would be more kids out.
I texted my daughter in San Diego to see how she fared since I heard it was raining there. She and SIL moved from an apt to a house in a residential neighborhood this summer. She heard from neighbors that there would be a lot of kids so she bought two huge bags of candy from Costco plus two smaller bags she bought later “just in case.” Despite the fact that it was lightly raining, in her words, “OMG, it was crazy!” At one point she said there was a line all the way down her driveway! Greedy Kids were trying to take handfuls but there were so many kids she had to limit them to one each and still ran out. She said it was obvious some kids were not from the neighborhood which is only a few streets.
