Horrific attack in New Orleans. I wonder what his motive will end up being?

This attack is all over the news. They say they don’t know the 10 who died, and the 30 injured. I doubt that.
I remember being there 25 or so years ago over the 4th of july. Bourbon street was one big party.
This current event happened about 3:15am. I imagine the crowd had maybe eased a bit by then.
The dead and injured are most likrly a variety of people from far and wide as well as locals. It’s probably not a priority to get that information out right now and next of kin will need to be notified first.
They keep aaying on CBS news that the person that did this wasn’t a good person and didn’t just wake up and decide to do an evil act. This was a planned evwnt.

“The truck used in the attack appeared to be a F-150 Lightning, an electric vehicle. A black flag appeared to be attached to the vehicle, but its significance was not immediately known.”
Local news is reporting that it was an ISIS flag in the truck and that the driver was wearing military gear: New Orleans attack suspect named, accused of killing at least 10, injuring dozens

Our niece and her bf live in NOLA, of course I immediately texted them. They had been downtown, until a little after 1, so fortunately missed the catastrophe.
What an absolutely horrible way to start 2025.

“The truck used in the attack that killed at least 10 people in New Orleans on New Year’s Day was listed on the car rental site Turo, the vehicle’s owner told CNN in a text message.
Two federal law enforcement officials also told CNN the truck did not belong to the suspect. One of the sources added it was rented on a site that owners use to rent out their own cars.
The vehicle, a white Ford F-150 Lightning electric truck, is registered to a Houston man who has worked for the car dealership where the vehicle was sold, according to public records based on the vehicle’s license plate. The man told CNN the vehicle was listed on Turo, a website that allows owners to rent out their vehicles to other people.”
I was curious where one could rent a Lightning. This explains it.
Heavy. Large. Fast acceleration. Almost silent (no engine roar).
Absolutely horrible.

The Sugarbowl is delayed 24 hours, but I’m concerned about the safety for that event but also for the Superbowl and Mardi gras.

My H was questioning why the street wasn’t blocked off by barriers. Seems barriers were installed in 2017, but were taken down to be replaced back in November, with the plan to have the project completed in 3 months.
Seems like for some events it would be easy to park a loaded DPW dump truck, or similar, in the road and block it off (provide a barrier). Nothing fancy even required.
Unfortunately it appears we need to be more vigilant.

Reports say that a police vehicle had been parked as a substitute for a key barrier that was missing. However, the attacker bypassed this by using the sidewalk to enter the critical area.

Such horrible news.
I’m interested to see what type of barriers there were. One witness said they had metal ones but did not use them but rather flimsy orange plastic ones.
Could this have been mitigated ?

Apparently, the barriers were removed and the reinforcement was being repaired with the work to be finished by the Superbowl weekend.

Ugh.
Yes the metal barriers were almost finished being repaired. They apparently had police cars as barriers. New s now sayin there was, IIRC, a female and 2 males additionally involved in th4e implementation of this attack.

"The FBI said it is investigating the attack early Wednesday in the city’s famed French Quarter as a terrorist act and does not believe the driver acted alone.
Investigators found multiple improvised explosive devices, including two pipe bombs that were concealed within coolers and wired for remote detonation, according to a Louisiana State Police intelligence bulletin obtained by the Associated Press."
Three men and a woman maybe associated with devices.
“Jabbar drove a rented pickup truck onto a sidewalk, going around a police car that was positioned to block vehicular traffic, authorities said.”"
So, it sounds like the barrrier system wouldn’t have helped as the terrorist drove on the sidewalk to avoid the blocked street anyway.
“The flag of the Islamic State group was on the truck’s trailer hitch, the FBI said.”
