Well the scoreboard doesn’t lie @blossom They’re going even from the most liberal families. My college gf son is head to FSU from
NY. Off the charts liberal family.
I think you bring up the most creative and thought provoking examples in many of your posts. The things you bring up - blow my mind - just so deep and thoughtful.
But I’d turn it around and say - you are in the far minority here.
Some kids yes and we see them here on the cc.
But the cc is a bubble.
It’s as I said:
Money/cost
Weather
Sports - and add in other perceived social benefits.
They’re leaving Illinois, NY/NJ/CT in droves.
Why is that ?
Most are not thinking like you in my humble opinion. Most don’t look through a political lens.
You are very deep in thought and it always amazes me. But you are not the norm and no, I don’t think most moms are thinking their kid is getting knocked up besides giving them condoms.
Forgot to tell you earlier, but my 2027 daughter is interested in rival Auburn. Weather is the reason Auburn beats out Purdue so far. 2025 son is opposite, as he wants city and snow, so he is headed to SLC, U of U.
I agree with you @blossom. I think some decisions being made by parents of college age Daughters is different than for college age sons. Fortunately,if a college age daughter had an ectopic pregnancy, many of us here on CC would have the financial ability to help that daughter get to wherever they needed to be for medical care. But it is a variable that people do consider, over and above just the cost of the school. It’s an ethical and moral issue. I have told friends that as much as I love them in Florida I don’t want to come down and spend any more money in that state for political reasons. These are personal and moral decisions and some people place a higher priority on it than others. It’s not always just about the money falling out of one’s wallet.
May be regional / local. My school was heavily greek (still is). It wasn’t offensive there…Most of my male friends were in houses…they would say there in a “house” or going to the “house” generally but “frat” wasn’t off limits in any weird way. i just searched the school newspaper and lots of recent articles talk about “frat parties” and “frat” this and that.
This was my experience too. “Frat” was often used pejoratively and dismissively similar to “jock” or “NARP”. People in fraternities rarely said “frat” unless it was in jest or ironically…“frat guy”
I don’t even know what that is, so had to google it.
Our school was heavily greek, but none of fraternities took themselves seriously as “leadership” or “volunteer” organizations. They were for socializing and parties and they happened to do some volunteer work…there was no pretense about them about being important (except in terms of offering social options). They each had a vibe, of course. Certain sports congregated mainly in certain houses. Some were national, some not. My friend (I texted about frat being perjorative) who was in a house LOL’d at the idea. My partner went to my school also did.
Would you say the same about a right leaning family sending their kids to a left-leaning school in the Northeast?
Obviously Southern campuses are beautiful, there’s great weather, school spirit, more and more job oppty’s, football game days. Oh and…diversity of thought.
There is a good article from Town and Country Mag a few yrs back that explains the movement of kids from the North to Southern schools. The article is behind a paywall but this link describes it. Basically, you get more diversity of thought in the South whereas most of NE schools’ students and professors lean one way. That, alone, would be worth it to send your kids out of an echo chamber. To each their own.
More like due to historical segregation, so that the fraternity and sorority governing bodies at many campuses are organized as such (though MCGC and UGC are less commonly present):
Interfraternity Council (IFC) – mostly historically White fraternities
National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) – mostly historically White sororities
National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) – historically Black fraternities and sororities
Multicultural Greek Council (MCGC) – fraternities and sororities typically not historically White or Black
United Greek Council (UGC) – fraternities and sororities typically not historically White or Black
At University of Alabama, there are IFC, NPC, and NPHC chapters. UGC chapters appear to be mainly those with specific academic interests (business, band, etc.), although this is not necessarily the case at other campuses where UGC exists.
There may be diversity of thought- but when it’s YOUR kid being denied their medically prescribed treatment, the diversity “down south” ain’t helping you. I am not aware of a “right leaning kid” being denied medically appropriate treatment in any blue state, needing to go out of state for a medical procedure, being told that their driver’s license is invalid if their gender doesn’t match their “birth genetics”, etc. We aren’t talking about attitudes towards taxation. For some kids, we’re talking basic survival.
But the question is not if your scenario is possible (it is). The question is - are they taking that into account when choosing a school?
In some cases yes. In most, I’d say no. The CC or folks here in top and wealthy school districts aren’t most. The people on this website, that are engaged in their kid’s college choices, are likely a huge minority.
I don’t think many think as deeply as you. Perhaps they do and I’m wrong and these youngsters are playing with fire with their eyes wide open.
Let’s return to the OP’s question. All further responses should be aimed at the OP, not anyone else. IOW,discussion of medical care in red states vs blue states, the offensiveness of the word “frat,” are amongst the side topics which have now ended.
I have two non-Greek students at UA, and both are doing well! Absolutely no need or desire to join Greek life. Although Greek life at Alabama is the largest in the country, it’s still a minority of students who partcipate (30%-35%).
Also, I am appalled that the student(s) involved in the SAE hazing incident were only charged with misdeamors. That’s a travesty.
