Try again?

My son applied to a school he really LOVED last year. He was a good fit stats wise, but received very little advice from either my naive self or his GC. He would like to try again. He is taking a PG year and we were wondering what effect, if any the late arrival of his previous GC’s letters might have had on his chances. Granted, we should have been chasing this person, but didn’t. Out for personal leave from October 20 to January 1st. When we discovered the only recs not received were GCs, we called and encouraged that they be sent immediately. They were sent supposedly with letter of explanation. But, with the large pool of otherwise applicants last time around could that be a reason DS would get the boot? Should he try again. With a list of backups of course.

When were the recs actually sent? If they were received by mid January, there shouldn’t have been a problem.

One would have to see your son’s stats to guess whether he had a chance at the schools to begin with. Was he in the 75th percentile and above for the schools?

The top schools usually don’t favor those re-applying, unless there are significant developments- national level prizes, national or regional athletic accomplishments, research or big volunteeer projects.

If you search “andisson” or andison on CC, you can read of a boy who reapplied after multiple rejections to top schools (with the stats). The story is very informative and revealing.

Doesn’t the PG school have good counseling? They should be able to assess chances. With what you’ve given us here it would be impossible to say. Are we talking Yale or a large state school?
