Trying to plan 21st bday dinner and need help from New Yorkers.

Hi everyone. CC parents have been so helpful, I decided to try here again. D is living in NYC for a fall internship, and she turns 21 in November. I’d like to treat about 12 of her friends to dinner, and I am looking for a fun restaurant that will take a reservation. They will most likely head to clubs after (not sure where the hot area is for kids), so I’m hoping the restaurant would be somewhat convenient. Any NY’ers out there have any ideas? In terms of food, Mexican, Italian or American would be great. I would appreciate any ideas, thanks!

What neighborhood does she live in and where do they want to go? There are hundreds of restaurants in the city that fit your criteria (Mexican, Italian, American) so you should narrow it down a bit before we are able to give you any advice!

Rosa Mexicano by Lincoln Center - young crowd, really pretty restaurant, great food and lively atmosphere.

[Rosa Mexicano | Fine Dining Restaurant | Best Mexican Food](http://www.rosamexicano.com/Locations/NewYorkNYLincolnCenter/tabid/96/Default.aspx)

Actually there are three locations in Manhattan but I’ve only been to the Lincoln Center one.

ABC Kitchen is great, another restaurant by Jean George. They have large tables, all organic food, very hip. It is down in the Union Square area (ABC Carpet). Very hard to get in, make your reservation early.

We were just at Barbuto. It looks like a garage. It’s down at the meat pack district.

FYI - all of our restaurant recommendations come from our 23 year old daughter.

For D1’s birthday, we gave her a bar allowance. She organized a party at an upcoming bard. She and few friends had cocktail (food) at her apartment before they headed over to the bar (club).

oldfort – we were just at Barbuto too! How funny.

I second Rosa Mexicano (never been there, but my hip young 30-something nephew and wife like it).

Spice Market is another option – another Jean George restaurant – variety of interesting foods and a great selection of non-alcholic drinks too.

DBGB on the Bowery – young, hip, fun.

Thanks for the suggestions! She lives on the UES, but I am looking for a restaurant nearer the areas where clubs would be (maybe East Village or meatpacking district?). Oldfort, that is a great idea. Could your daughter recommend a couple of clubs that I could contact to see if they offer any type of package? Looking for something that attracts a younger crowd and would be an “in” place. Thanks!

Carmine’s on 44th and 6th - it’s a bit touristy but the food is actually very good and served family style. It’s a bit noisy, but that’s likely only an issue for us old folks.

And they easily accommodate large groups.

How much do you want to spend? We took my son to WD50 for his 21st, and it was great, but I quail to think how much the bill would be for 12 people.

We had a good meal for a larger group at Craftbar.

I just took a group of my students to Carmines (44th & 7th) for dinner last night. I called a day in advanced and was able to book a table for 9. Everything is family style and it was very reasonably priced

My daughter just went out the other night with her friends a place called sweet revenge. She said it was rather small but she had a good time

[Sweet Revenge](http://www.sweetrevengenyc.com/)

She called last night to say that she got an email about a Top Chef doing a series of pop up resturants, but by the time she logged in to book a reservation they were sold out

there are any number of places that they can go eat in NYC. Is there a particular price point where she wants to be. I am quite sure that your D has also reached out to some of her school friends (as there are plenty of them here) and have probably gotten some ideas as to what she wants to do (sometimes, they are not so much interested in the sit down dinner as much as going to the club/bar).

Note: there are lots and lots of restaurants on Open Table that will let you make reservations for larger groups.

I was also going to recommend Carmine’s. It’s fun & loud with a group. The dishes are served family style.

Here’s a great website for searching NYC restaurants & viewing menus:

Thanks for all of these ideas. In terms of cost, I’m not looking to break the bank, but it is her 21st, so I don’t mind spending a bit. I’ll check these all out today. Carmine’s is a great idea. We have eaten at the one at Atlantis, and it was good. I also saw BDGB had a chef’s kitchen table, which could be fun. And Mexican is always great. Sybbie, I have spoken to her about plans, and you are right, she has quite a few college friends in NY. She thinks it would be fun to have dinner with friends after work (she’s lucky…her 21st falls on a Friday) at around 8 pm, then they can hit the clubs. She’s very excited, as she hasn’t been able to go to the clubs (no fake id). I’m hoping to find a place that has good food, a fun, hip atmosphere, and is near the clubs. Her boyfriend lives in East Village, and there seems to be quite a few clubs in that area. But they can always take the subway if the dinner place ends up farther away from where they want to go.

And thanks for that link nj2011mom…love it!

Another suggestion is Ma Peche–I think they could accomodate a group, but you’d have to call them. http://momou.com/new-york/ma-peche/
It’s pretty hip.

The Park on 10th Avenue and 15th. Cool place across the street from the High Line and reasonable prices!

Budakan or Tao…

Anchor Bar - D1 had her 21 party
Hotel Chantelle is fun bar now
big group for dinner - Sons of Essex is good

Above is according to D1. I think she gets out quite a bit for both work and pleasure.

Thanks for the info Oldfort. I emailed the Anchor Bar to find out about their party packages (it said they had them on their website). And thanks to everyone for their recommendations. I have a question. Using the link nj2011mom gave me, I came up with a place called The Rodeo Bar and Grille. It’s a TexMex/BBQ place, very casual, with peanuts on the floor and country western music. D is a huge country fan, so I thought this would be a fun place for dinner before heading to the clubs. Has anyone eaten there or know anything about it? The reviews are pretty good, and prices are very reasonable, and they have pitchers of margaritas/sangria/beer, which would work for a group. D loves Mexican food and country music, so this could fit the bill.

It looks like a fun place. Growing up, our girls listened to a lot of country music. We used to take them to a place similar to the Rodeo Bar in NJ every Sun. The girls loved doing line dancing. I just emailed the site to our kids and told them that we are checking the place out. I think you should go for it.

Rosa Mexicano at Union Square is a lot bigger and more fun for the younger crowd than the one at Lincoln Center. They have a bigger bar area where you can also eat dinner, but is first come first served.

Dos Caminos is nice too, there is one on Park Ave in the 20’s and another on the West side, not far from Spice Market, which is also a good restaurant.

Another excellent restaurant in that area is Ilily, a large Lebanese restaurant with a great lounge on 5th and around 27th.

All of the above should be convenient to many clubs in the Downtown area.
