Why i shouldn’t be Selected

ESSAY: Describe the world you come from, for example your family, clubs, school, community, city, or town. How has that world shaped your dreams and aspirations?

My grandmother’s house was full of religion; sometimes there were ceremonies that went on for days. Yet, no one explained to us children what was going on. I doubt if even she, my grandmother knew what their significance was: they were carried on, unquestioned, because they were ancient.

I come from a family of Civil Servants and Professors. My paternal grandfather’s father was an officer in the British Raj, so is the rest of my father’s family (including him, my father). My maternal grandfather was a Professor, so is rest of my mother’s family (including her). ‘Modern Caste system’ my grandfather used to comment, jokingly. Caste is central to Indian psyche. Class is a system of rewards; caste on the other hand, imprisons a man into his proclaimed function – the rest becomes subsidiary. It was only when my father objected to my working besides school that I realized how deep the concept of Caste was rooted in Indian mind. A driver will only drive and not wash the car; a businessman will make money, even if that means selling colored water in place of medicines; and as a student, I would only study, nothing else.

It’s said, by Naipaul and other post-colonial writers that Indians can’t look directly at their country directly, or else the distress they would see will drive them mad. Much is also said about their ability to ignore the obvious, ability to retreat in fantasy, ability to successfully negate the truth.

It’s only through self-inquiry that I am able to realize how much of this philosophy has/had been mine. The Smugness; the refusal to see what’s unpleasant; double talk and double think; my reverence for the ancient, however awkward it may be.

I am for that matter, a true Indian. If I was asked to portray India then I would, typically like an Indian, point at its pacifism; it’s ability to absorb everyone- be it Arab merchants or Turk conquerors; it’s National religion, Hinduism, which is perhaps the only religion in this world which doesn’t claims to be the true religion; it’s pluralism, about my house, where the tinkling of bells from a Hindu temple mixes the wail of the muezzin from a mosque situated on the opposite site of the road, in between stands a plaque proclaiming Marxist atheism. I would gloss over its superstitions, its inequalities, and its obscurantism.

Like any other Indian I haven’t had (and perhaps still don’t have) any sense of History. In a democracy like India, historical facts can’t be surpassed. In fact, they are acknowledged and then ignored. Our interpretation of history is as painful as the history itself. For, my ancestral house in Mathura was a Hindu temple till an invader form Afghanistan defiled it. Yet during my stay there I was woken up innumerable times by people who wanted to pray in a small remain that miraculously survived. A Thousand year old temple still lives! This is India, eternal. Or perhaps, is this sentimental conviction that India will go on, the cause of our neglect towards our country?
India will somehow look after itself; individual is freed from his/her responsibility.

Mahabharata and Ramayana, the two Sanskrit epics, are the focal point of Indian life. Both are the stories of great wars fought on the principle of Dharma (Dharma, Righteousness underlying law). I still remember, my grandmother telling me the story of Ram, the hero of Ramayana, who set against the crusade against the abductors of his wife Sita.
Looking back at these epics I realize how far we have come from a utopian land, where truth and Dharma were worshiped to a land of rampant corruption and endemic faithlessness. But for that we ourselves are to be blamed. Like the ceremonies in my grandmother’s house we don’t question our world- we accept it as it comes. Passivity.

The courageous struggle of my father against corruption has inspired me the most. All my life, I have seen him struggle. He’s often transferred to remote districts, It’s often months till we see him; often he is pressurized by corrupt officers and politicians; yet I have never seen him complaining. It was perhaps a feeling of anger which prompted me to work for the Right to Information act.
If I were him, then probably I would have yielded to all this. Despite all what he has suffered, he still wants me to be an officer like him. It’s through him that I realize that there’s a need to be good.

Perhaps what could be said about India- every truth about this land has an opposite, which is also true- is also true about me. I am an atheist, yet a devout Hindu; I am interested in Science, yet arts attract me. Schizophrenic may be the right word to describe me when I pray in the Shiva temple, along with millions of Indians, before each and every launch by our Space agency.

All children come into this world, knowing nothing. It’s our environment that makes us. India has shaped me into what I am, be it good or bad.

Why I shouldn’t be Selected: Dunno English. Numerous Silly, grammatical, Spelling errors and typos in my Essays, Applications and Supplemental materials.
EDIT:Even in this Thread

Oh I forgot!
Citizenship: India

Actually I am getting pretty much Tense so i thought to make a “What are my Chances thread?” for my 1000 post. Can some tell me what are my Chances(I know this is a stupid question but…)? Please be blunt and honest.
Thanks

Um 99 views and 0 replies!
That’s unfair.

Just a tip, essays that start or end with “and so my history has made me who I am… I am the sum of my experiences… we are all shaped by our history” are extremely bland.

Also, it comes off as very scattered - find your thesis, then stick to developing it. Your accomplishments are pretty nice, but make your essay a bit more living, you know?

Thanks frrrph.
Yeah, actually I lot of people told me that the ending is abrupt and doesn’t fits in; but i wasn’t able to think of anything else.

I am wondering how much would the 25 in English ACT hurt? and which counts more: ACT Reading section or ACT English section? In the SAT, CR counts more than writing Section. Does reading counts more in the ACT also?

i think if you’ve taken the toefl (which i guess you shouldve) it’ll make up for both.

Actually i was expecting 30+ in the English section so I never thought of giving the TOEFL. TOEFL is hell lot of expensive also.

Abhi, u have wonderful ECs… I’d like to know abt the progress of ur startup and research project

Startup has been in loss for the last years:D
Research was nothing great; although the results were pretty good. I haven’t sent any research abstract, although.

doesnt matter, it’ll show youre dedicated and that you have good work ethics

Yeah that’s what i thought.
Anyone else? I thought people on this thread were quiet helpful- even with stupid thread like this one.
Thanks

I don’t think you need to worry at all.

Thanks everybody.

y ddnt u sent yer research abstracts?

This thread has the best title ever. Just…fyi.

in my opinion, it’s quite hard to tell your chances based on your stats and EC. Although i have to admit that your profile is quite impressive. MIT’s admissions process is almost unpredictable. Im sure you’ve seen people with amazing stats and EC get turned down and mediocre people as myself get accepted. my stats would not live up to yours. I have never done research, I dont have perfect SATs scores…overall, i haven’t done anything special except start my own club and normal participation in sports and other things. My grades aren’t bad, I have only 2 B’s but that has nothing to do with it. I dont blame you for posting your stats because its tempting and there’s always that little glimpse of hope that maybe, just maybe, someone could tell the future and tell you that you’ll get accepted for sure. unfortunately, i gotta break it to ya, you just gotta bide your time and wait it out. =] in the mean time…good luck!

Thanks Kbui330.

gotinhere: It’s like a commercial product not a breathtaking research project. I don’t think it would have afected my decision any way even if i had mailed it.
