Congratulations on the TE offer to Loyola Chicago! It’s a great school, as many people have been mentioning in a different thread recently.

Depending on the engineering specialty your son is interested in, it could be very important to attend an ABET-accredited school for the specialty. This is not my area of expertise, however, so I would definitely check out more informed opinions than mine. Below are two threads (one of which was mine!) that could be useful, as Loyola Chicago is ABET-accredited for general engineering.

General Engineering Programs: Reputations, Outcomes, Etc

Many ABET-accredited universities are accredited in specific engineering domains, such as chemical engineering, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, etc. Some schools, however, particularly smaller ones, are simply accredited for the category of Engineering/General Engineering/Engineering Physics and Engineering Science. What are typical career options for those with a general engineering major? Do most programs have students do a concentration within the general engineering major (i.e. mechanical vs. electrical)? Do these students usually need to go to grad school in a more specific engineering discipline? Or are these programs viewed favorably enough for students to get jobs as engineers directly out of college? Basically, I don’t know much about the general engineering major and would love to learn more.

Can someone explain why someone would pursue a general engineering degree? What is your career path? A couple of smaller schools, Loyola and Endicott, offer this degree. I realize that a specific engineering degree is preferred but if you wind up in a sales or consulting role does it matter?
