I was advised this morning of an interesting tidbit pertaining to UVa’s use of Tuition Management Systems (TMS). For those who may not know, this outfit works with UVa so that tuition (and all other fees and costs of attending Uva) may be paid in ten equal installments throughout the academic calendar year. The cost to the payee to use TMS is an annual fee of $65. With the BOV announcement of next year’s tuition, I tried this morning to re-up with TMS (having used them for the last two years) only to be advised by TMS that UVa has yet to commit to using TMS for the 2009-2010 calendar year. Accordingly, TMS is not permitted at this time to contract for UVa students.

I imagine SFS will still have some sort of payment program, but with an entirely new student information system now in place, I guess vendors might change. You could always give SFS a call to ask about this.

Thanks. Will do. It was always just a convenience but a convenience nevertheless. Also, one other question. My records may be wrong but I thought last year’s tuition for an OOS student was $29,600. Next year, according to the Cavalier Daily, the tuition is supposed to go up for an OOS student by 7.5%. Yet they list the tuition for next year at only $29,873. That is clearly much less than a 7.5% increase. Any thoughts?

I think the Cav Daily’s math might be a tad off. See MechWahoo’s thread about tuition.

Agreed. I knew it was too good to be true.

[Here’s the press release](http://www.virginia.edu/uvatoday/newsRelease.php?id=8315).

I originally posted numbers from the Daily Progress, but they didn’t agree with the press release.

Thanks. Here is a summary of what the SFS office said five minutes ago:
UVA is officially no longer using TMS but the concept remains the same:

D (no one else) must go on the UVA website and set up a Quick Pay account, giving you, the parent, the right to access the financial information and make payments. This account is set up the same way as TMS in that you will be making monthly payments directly to the school, i.e. 10 total payments; 5 for fall/5 for spring. The financial aid officer emphasized that only the student can set up this account and only the student can give the rights to the parent(s)

Sorry- I am still confused. Both the press release and the Cav Daily appear to have the OOS tution number lower than what it should be if it went up 7.5% from last year. Sorry for being thick but what is your understanding of the OOS tuition for a returning non-Virginian for next year?

Is it $31,672 or is it $29,873?

Not trying to gore anyone’s ox here if it is unclear at this moment.

I have no idea, John. SFS needs to clarify.

Thanks. I am glad to hear that my confusion is contagious (read well founded).

umm, according to the uva website it says tuition and fees for 2008-2009 were $9,490 for in-state. why is the number on hte press release $2,000 lower?

I think the press release refers only to tuition; website refers to tuition AND fees. I believe fees are unchanged for the upcoming year.

JR,

There are four components of tuition and fees – tuition, educational & general (E&G) fees, auxiliary fees, and activity fees. The $29,600 from last year is composed of all the components. The upcoming year total is $31,672.

The $29,873 you see mentioned excludes the auxiliary and activity fees. Those fees declined from $1,802 to $1,799. In reality, overall tuition for OOS increased by 7%.

Thanks, Mech.

Dean J -can you PM me your email. I tried to respond, but you’re blocked (duh lol). Thanks

deanj “at” virginia “dot” edu

But I just fixed that setting in my PM box. I shut PMs down completely a while back when I was getting “chance” emails. :)

Thanks for the clarification. I was quite sure that the “all in” figure had increased by more than $273.
