Tuition tax question

Can anyone shed any light on the available tax deductions for boarding school tuition? I have heard (right or wrong) a percentage can be deducted as daycare, etc. but was interested in any other ways, if any, that the tuition can be tax deductible.

Thanks

Well, I would certainly be interested in this. I currently have a child who is a junior and one who already graduated, and I never took any deductions. Just imagine all of those amended forms (jk would never do that).

Daycare credits only apply to children under the age of thirteen.

Some states allow credit for a portion of private school tuition and fees.

My understanding is that the daycare credits only apply to children under thirteen for things like summer camp (must be a general camp, not a specialized one). For school, nursery school seems to be fine to take a deduction on your federal return up to the $5K limit, kindergarten is viewed as borderline (depends how aggressive you want to be on your tax return), and beyond kindergarten is viewed as over-the-line. At least that’s how my accountant explained it to me. We used the credit for our son’s in private day school while in nursery. We didn’t need to worry about the kindergarten issue because our older son was in day camp at the time that clearly qualified.
