Not uncommon for schools that pull in a good portion of their student body from OOS (mostly private) to require at least the first year and in some cases 2 on campus.
Like @trops said, you’ll see places going for rents of $1,500/month. Pictures of some of those places are often nicer than the home my kid grew up in. There’s plenty of housing that’s competitive with dorm prices - at least when comparing to the 8 months/year they live on campus.
Having a dreadful time with Tulane financial aid office and communications (or lack thereof) through Gibson Portal. It would seem they are making the process intentionally complex. They are still asking for paperwork on top of paperwork. I sincerely hope with the latest reconsideration form they will be able to process a package. We have not even visited without a financial aid offer and it is nearly too late. How frustrating compared to Carleton and Macalester!
I would expect that if you’re looking for reconsideration they’re likely to ask for additional documentation.
Have you tried emailing your childs FAO directly? Tulane assigns them by last name/alphabet and lists the contact on the FA website. I usually send a an email to that person if I have a question and get a response within a half hour. I have had things be an issue in the Gibson portal (submitted a file and it showed it was received but went to them as something they couldn’t open). When they received it they emailed my son - since legally he is the account owner - but like many 18 year olds today he wasn’t so hot about seeing something important to open and that became an issue too.
Yes, I have submitted all supporting docs including W2s for 2023 they hadn’t yet asked for…you are probably correct that they may have emailed him, but he’s been busy with theater…anyway, their portal seems antiquated. Hoping finally for a package.
It looks like their document processing is kind of slow. We submitted a response to a request for information on Apr 4. The status shows it is still not processed. We are not counting on it, though.
My suggestion was that you were stating that there was a lack of communication from them. It could well be they were being responsive but you weren’t seeing it because it was going to your son.
I thought the same thing when I submitted some files to them and the portal continued to show as pending. Then I emailed the FAO directly to see what was going on and she forwarded the email to me that was sent to my son about the error.
I noticed that too! He committed to Lehigh University. He has the national 4-year ROTC scholarship and Lehigh matched that with 4 years of free room and board.
Thanks! My D24’s FAFSA status on the Gibson portal was also updated to “received” on April 26. Maybe this was the day they received the batch for all from FAFSA. There’s still no FA estimate or offer yet from them, so she is asking for an extension as instructed by her AO. Tulane should have announced an extended deadline for all RA admits.
Her assigned FA counselor reached out to her with some questions a while ago and she answered their questions the day after. Somehow her answers were also marked “received” last Friday. It felt that it took quite a long time for them to process the received info.
The aid estimate came tonight (the night of May 1). They extended the commitment deadline to May 15 at the last minute. I can feel the rush in their FAO.
Our son was offered a spot off the waitlist on Tuesday, and surprisingly, on Wednesday received an email offering a significant
Academic Recognition Scholarship. Didn’t realize that merit awards were still at play.
If the kids that declined admittance had merit packages that frees up “School money” to award to others. Also keep in mind that Waitlists (at least at most places) are not need blind and most school scholarships and merit grants do not stack.
If they looked at the financial aid submission (if there was one) and determine they were going to have to cover $X through a grant, it’s really not much different to them if they make it a scholarship.
May or may not apply to your situation specifically - just a general note.
