@WiscoRunner you were deferred and didn’t get any update? they havent sent u an email or anything? did that happen to someone else
I am a bit confused, I was accepted EA w/ 23k a year. Today I got an email saying I have been invited to honors program, and on my greenwave portal the invitation honors program has been added to my acceptance letter. Did this happen to anyone else? Tulane is my top choice rn and I am just waiting for Paul Tulane Award
@sss111222 Did I get an update in the past week or so? No. I got my original update, saying that I was deferred from the EA pool. I just saw that a few other people on here said they got an update within the last like two days and were accepted after originally being deferred.
I just got accepted into the honors but my admission letter said nothing about it so it also happened to me @skigirl865
Really thought I did everything right. African-American male, 32 ACT, 4.0 UW GPA, 4.6 W#17 rank in my class, stellar extracurriculars/recs/essays, stellar Why Tulane essay as well even though I never toured. Deferred. Reached out to my admissions counselor multiple times to show interest and questions with no response. Quite disappointed that she never even bothered to respond when I had questions. Other counselors at the universities I’ve applied to have great track records of doing so. This really just stings.
There is no rhyme or reason why some people are getting accepted and others are getting deferred. All I know is from my daughter’s school in New Orleans, Tulane accepted a lot of people EA with way way less credentials than you. And guess what… they all already plan on going to LSU. Students are getting accepted with ACTs of 28 and 29 and no APs. This admission office seems to be very haphazard and disorganized.
Deferred ugh. International living in US, SAT 1410, GPA 3.73/4, 6.64/7 Lots of extracurriculars, did “Why Tulane” essay, top 5% of class, taking all APs and Honors since 9th grade. Depressed
I think its important to understand that stats are not the only thing that admissions counselors look for. Yes they are the most important but extracurriculars and essays (don’t forget the common app essay not just the why Tulane essay) carry a lot of weight- perhaps more than one would think. ACTs and GPA are a minimum that just get you through the door…
The reason they defer so many high stat applicants EA is because they want to wait and see the amount of high stat applicants for the ED rounds. They know they will have a harder time yielding these students during the RD round.
Deferred kids at my D’s school have been randomly getting acceptances over the last few days. She has 4.0, 1480 SAT, 33 ACT, and was deferred. She has been accepted to Michigan EA but would still consider Tulane with the right financial package. I really don’t understand what they are doing. I think they will lose really great kids because of the way some of these kids are being treated. I’m sure they have their reasons, but I can’t say it makes sense to me.
I think the Admission Office will be in for a shock when their yield rate has not improved. They have waived application fees for a lot of New Orleans area students, bombarded them with marketing materials to get them to apply so they can brag about the record number of applicants and accepted many who have no intention of attending Tulane. As I said before, they are going to LSU.
@happylamp My common app essay was also quite stellar in my opinion. I worked on it endlessly and had it edited by multiple people. Only thing probably keeping me is that I never visited. I did call Tulane Admissions today however and they said they’re rolling applications from EA and that to them, there’s really no set way people are getting accepted.
@unclefester I am not surprised by what you say because Tulane has an arrangement with the State of Louisiana for guranteed admission for in-state applicants who have at least a 30 ACT or 1400 on the redesigned SAT and a 3.6 unweighted gpa, who apply during the EA or ED. So Tulane has no choice but to accept all the applicants from your students NOLA high school who met this criteria even if the applications did not indicate particularly strong interest in the school. The likely reason they are going to LSU is the in-state cost of the state flagship, it costs a lot to attend LSU than Tulane, which is a private university.
@trackmbe3 I promise you many accepted do not even meet the minimum requirements for automatic acceptance. Something very strange is going on here. I am wondering if there has been a malfunction in the admission office like last year.
@unclefester First off, they are not pandering to New Orleans students by waiving their application fees, there is no application fee at Tulane for anyone. It’s true that they do have a program for State of LA students that has lower requirements for admission. It obviously does not have too much of an impact on a OOS student’s chances of being accepted though judging by the low percentage of Tulane’s class that come from LA. Most cannot afford it, and Tulane knows this in advance. Although Tulane’s admission process may not be as transparent as you would like it to be, or maybe it hasn’t produced the result you desire, keep in mind that they are processing tens of thousands of applications. In terms of managing their yield, there are only a very small handful of colleges in the whole country that are not having yield problems because kids are applying to so many more colleges every year. I think for whatever reason you are unnecessarily picking on Tulane’s admission departments and it’s processes when all they are doing is the same thing every other college in their respective “class of rank” is doing right now.
@WiscoRunner , my best guess would be that if you applied for the Paul Tulane, it does not matter that you were deferred. If you are fortunate enough to be awarded the Paul Tulane at end February, you would of course be by default of getting the award, admitted. If you do not get the Paul Tulane, you would be notified either way. In any case, good luck!
@Pastpower , sorry to read of your deferral. Looks like you are an amazing candidate for Tulane and I suspect you have a great shot of getting in still. That being said, they do not only look at strong ACT and GPA, not sure whether they factor in class rank heavily. One thing I have read, like many on here, is that demonstrated interest is big. Yes, it seems disappointing that you so far have not heard back from your admissions counselor, but persistence pays off sometimes and I would try calling or writing again. Meanwhile, if you can afford it and if Tulane truly is one of your top choices, I think it may still be worthwhile to try to visit in the next month if you are able to do so. That could also be addressed in an email to your counselor, to ask whether that may be important or viewed favorably.
Tulane is trying to curate a class. When deciding to admit/reject/waitlist etc. they are not just looking for high grades and test scores but for people who will fit in at Tulane and will have a positive impact on the community. They may choose to accept someone with slightly lower grades and test scores because through their resume and essays those students have not only demonstrated interest in the school but have proved to admissions officers that they are a crucial part to Tulane’s incoming class. Sure high grades and test scores may get you an automatic acceptance at a large state school, but at a smaller school like Tulane your application needs to reflect accomplishments in many other areas
Tulane is rolling out EDII decision… found out today through Green Wave Portal that D is in with $15K Merit Scholarship and Honors invite.
@Cre8tive1234 They don’t “enjoy deferring quality candidates”. Like every other college in the country, their goal is to attract the best students and get as much tuition as they can in the process. You can understand, because like most every student in the country what you want is to get into the best college you can get into and to pay as little money as possible…right? Tulane, like so many other comparably ranked schools has so many high stat kids applying that they can’t let them all in. That’s the goal of EVERY college.
