Tulane is BIG on touring the school. I truly believe that is a factor that is totally taken into consideration. Many of my friends with better grades than me who did not visit the campus did not get in. Others with worse grades, who did visit the campus, got in. Our guidance counselors at school kept telling us that it was important for Tulane…not so much for other schools
I agree with @cwj2000 because although we did not tour the school, we went to a couple of information meetings, did an alumni interview, kept in contact with the school, etc. My son’s friends with equal stats did not do that stuff and they were deferred.
I know this ED, EA, EDII scenario is a bit insane and from a parent/student perspective it was pretty apparent what Tulane hoped to accomplish by deferring highly qualified EAs prior to the EDII deadline. Very qualified applicants may very well have another more prestigious school accept them, and then Tulane may lose them. If they can turn an EA into a firm ED, it’s obviously better for the school. Couple this scenario with the need to desire to create a balanced, diverse community – you will inevitably lose some great candidates. It’s not a perfect science, but it is what it is. There are plenty of great schools out there. I believe most kids end up in the best place for them.
@ProudMom2022 You are acting like Tulane is the only one playing the yield game? They are ALL doing it. You are right there are a ton of great schools out there, so don’t get hung up on this one.

@Pastpower – end of the day, Tulane is interested in ENROLLING the best possible (however you want to define that) class that they can. Admitting a lot of great kids who enroll elsewhere is not their objective.
Tulane simply doesn’t believe that you are likely to enroll at Tulane if they admit you. Because they assume you are going to get admitted to many schools higher up the food chain than Tulane. A high stat AA male is appealing to every college admissions office.
Is Tulane’s hunch wrong? Where else have you applied and been accepted? Would you REALLY enroll at Tulane if you got accepted to places upstream from Tulane?
If you really are interested in attending Tulane over Duke/Penn/NW/Vandy etc., you should be able to convince them of that and get admitted. But if Tulane thinks you are hunting acceptance trophies, they are smart to let you hang in the deferred/TBD category and see what happens as the season wears on.

@Cre8tive1234 – It is actually the other way around. Tulane deferred you because they believe you won’t end up enrolling. They think you’ll get admitted and enroll at someplace upmarket from Tulane. Perhaps a place like…maybe…Vandy? Is Tulane wrong about that?
Tulane’s admissions office is one of the most sophisticated around. If you really are seriously interested in potentially enrolling at Tulane, they are very open to receiving that information and turning that defer into an admission offer (including some merit money).

@EDHDAD. Please re-read my post. I am not acting like that at all and did not say Tulane was the only one. Not even sure how you interpreted my statements the way you did. However, you are incorrect in stating they are all doing the same thing. They are not. Many schools do either EA or ED, some do both, and some do ED, EA and EDII. Tulane actually was pretty smart in making sure they notified the EA kids prior to the EDII deadline (not all do that) to push as many deferrals as possible to EDII.
@ProudMom2022 In the end, all of the schools want the same thing. They want the best students With as much tuition paid to the school possible. The same way students want to go the best school possible and pay the least amount possible. As long as most students continue to apply to 12 or more schools to accomplish their goals, the only way schools can accomplish theirs is by playing the EA, ED, ED2 game. You can’t fault them for doing it.

Got accepted EA with Honors. 1510 SAT and 800 Math Level 2, IB predicted 42/45. I might be wrong but I don’t think I’m part of this ‘Tufts Syndrome’ because I left the Why Tulane essay blank.
Tulane isn’t high up on my list. The only reason I’m holding onto my offer is the Altman program

Was a little surprised to get deferred even through my ACT is low. From North Carolina public school
I got deferred with a 33 ACT, 1500 SAT, 4.95 weighted GPA, 8 APs, 2 varsity sports and centralized focus in my intended major
Deferred EA but just got into UNC-CH OOS with scholarship money. Looks like Tulane is out of the running unless I get Community Service or Paul Tulane. Still so astonishing to me I got deferred here but just got in EA to one of the hardest OOS schools to get into.
My D was def from Tulane. We were very surprised. She got in EA to UMichigan and UVA, both OOS. She was really considering Tulane if they gave her money, but now the chances are extremely slim that she would go there, regardless of how much they give her. I guess they have a plan on how they are crafting their class. I’m sure they will have a great class, but I’m not sure my daughter’s school will encourage kids to apply there next year.
@quadaces your D already has an impressive list of schools, is she is truly interested in Tulane she should send a letter of continuing interest. After my D got accepted and her friend defered he wrote them a very solid letter of continuing interest, he got accepted and got merit aid.
As to why one School takes some students over others who knows, but it also might depend on intended major.
My D is opposite of yours got into Tulane into the Honors Program and into. UN Chapel Hill got deferred by Michigan we are OOS for all three.

I got deferred from NC. 1500 SAT, 33 ACT, interest in genetics. 5.06 W GPA and 3.78 UW GPA. 2 varsity sports and a summer job for 4 years. Good Why Tulane Essay and a strong science focus in high school. 8 AP classes.
Anyone deferred ED heard back yet with a final decision? My D just sent in fall grades and portfolio of work. Wondering how long she will wait for a decision…
