EA deferred with great credentials and highly competitive school district. Plenty of solid ECs, APs etc. S is not happy he got deferred. Is it too late to request interview?
Deferred . I even visited over the summer.
It appears my D is in good company- deferred with 35ACT and 3.95 UWGPA with lots of honors and AP, ECs, silver award, etc. She did not have a visit as we live 2000 miles away and she was not aware of any events nearby.
Congrats to those who were accepted!
D was accepted EA with invitation to Honors Program with Founders Scholarship - 22k/year. We are honored! Is the scholarship only valid if she accepts the invitation to the honors program? Does anyone know how that works?
@BRAZUSA – The merit award and honors program are separate. If she does not join the honors program, she will still get the 22K a year. I’m not sure if there is a minimum GPA to maintain with your scholarship, but if there is, it should be on the letter.
Hi Pishicaca - thanks for the info. But wondering where you got the stat that only 8% of admits were ED? I truly do not believe that data point and would like to investigate it if you can share details. Thanks!
Son was accepted EA with “Academic Achievement Award” ($15k per)
OOS
3.8 uwgpa; 4.0 w
33 ACT
showed no interest-- did not even attend local info session
@5OnTheHill As I stated, it’s from the Tulane 2018-2018 Common Data Set. Link below, Page 12, section C21.

@AH1310 Thank you for the reply. Nice to know the merit scholarship and invitation to honors program are separate. I have not been able to find out much about the Founders Scholarship online.
Here’s an interesting thread from last year discussing “the admissions game” that Tulane plays:
I’d also love the source on the 8% if admits were early admits. Can’t seem to wrap my brain around that.
In the link posted above for common data set, it looks like 535 were accepted ED and something like 6700 were accepted in total. So it isn’t 8% of the class, but 8% of the acceptances, I think. It’s almost a third of the class, which is around 1800.
Ah I just noticed and was going through it. A third makes much more sense. Thank you!!
But, if “only “ a third comes from ED an incredibly high number must come from EA for it to jive with US New’s statement that only 1% is admitted RD. I’m I correct in saying that?
does US News mean only 1% of RD applicants, or 1% of the acceptances, or 1% of the matriculating class?
Not sure why this is so confusing. The number of admits is not the same as the number enrolled. Posters were implying that the only way to be accepted to Tulane these days is to apply ED. I was simply illustrating that not to be the case with actual acceptance data as opposed to supposition.
If you want to know the exact percentage of the enrolled class who were ED applicants, from these data I can only provide a close approximation. 1909 students enrolled. 535 of the applicants applied ED. If you assume all 535 ED applicants enrolled, then 28% of the actual enrolled class had applied ED. Since it is unlikely that all 535 actually enrolled, that percentage is likely somewhat lower.
And if your child was deferred by Tulane but accepted to Duke ED and is enrolling there…congratulations! But it’s a better look to happily hang out in the Duke forum, appreciating the amazing opportunity and excited for things to come as opposed to coming to the Tulane forum to bash it for the admissions “games” it is playing.
Tulane filled 28% of its class ED last year https://static1.squarespace.com/static/5d1ad956be52e800010a2502/t/5d533519235d0f00015ecfad/1565734169320/Early+Decision+and+Regular+Decision+Acceptance+Rates±+Class+of+2022+%28August+2019%29+v3.pdf
Thanks @jym626 That’s a helpful link! Given the discussion regarding Tulane’s overuse of ED in this thread it’s interesting to see how many schools fill a much higher percentage of their classes through ED than Tulane’s 28%. Take Duke, for example, at 50.4%.
Wow! Seems crazy that I got in with how great everyone’s stats and ECs are that got deferred. I am also so surprised about ED statistics for Tulane, I would have guessed way more ED kids to make up freshman class.
I couldn’t apply ED b/c of finances but applied EA and was accepted.
Stats : White Female. ACT 33, UW GPA 3.99, 2 APs junior year (3, 4 on tests), 3 APs this year. Some ECs but no leadership positions, unique sport, spent hours on common app essay and a few days on why Tulane.
20+ kids apply every year from my school, I showed a lot of interest and I think that’s why I was admitted. I attended info sessions, alumni interview, visited early in the fall.
Only 1 person that I know of got in ED, 4/5 others EA. Already some of EA kids aren’t going because they got better offers elsewhere, hopefully opening up spots for kids who got deferred.
Accepted with $15k per year.
UW GPA 3.58, ACT 32
Lots of strong ECs: US Senate Page, 2x Chinese study abroad program, World-ranked in sport (not a recruited athlete), Girls State, cellist
Visited and interviewed
