Accepted! (w/$24,000 merit scholarship + invitation to Honors Program)

ACT: 33
GPA: 4.33 (weighted), 4.0 unweighted
Rank: 1, 8 AP’s: Human Geography, APUSH, Lang, Lit, Gov, Physics C, Calc BC, Spanish 4
Tons of commitment to EC’s; huge internship junior/senior year

Quick comment: I could be totally wrong, but I have two friends who applied w/ higher stats than me that didn’t get in, and I think it shows that to Tulane, a higher ACT/SAT isn’t everything. I showed incredible interest in Tulane from the beginning of my junior year and went all-out for the optional essay, while my friend (35 on ACT) got deferred and had re-used some essays for her application. It’s all about level of commitment and demonstrated interest; they can tell when you really love the school.

Deferred
35 ACT
98/100 GPA W
Very Competitive HS
8 APs & remaining academic classes Honors
Resume showed commitment to community service
Expressed interest- Visited this Fall and went to an information session 35 miles from my home
Spent a lot of time on “Why Tulane” essay”
Interviewed
Wrote Paul Tulane essays

My Senior was deferred. Super sad as we thought it was a great fit for her.
I’m guessing they thought it was a safety school for her, as her SAT is super high, with perfect grades in IB Diploma. Funny thing is that she hasn’t applied to any Ivies because we can’t afford it. She’s been looking hard at the schools that offer merit aid for high stats. She had an alumna interview, applied for the Paul Tulane scholarship. She wanted to go to a local info night, but it was the night of the homecoming football game and she’s a squad leader in the marching band. Attendance is mandatory and graded. Ugh! We can’t switch to ED2 due to the money. Sigh.

What I don’t know is whether the Paul Tulane scholarship opportunity/application is now gone, with a deferral. Anyone know? Is that still a possibility, or were they all awarded with the EA & ED rounds? Thanks! Roll wave!

I don’t think they are awarded yet, because the deadline was Dec. 5 or so.

There is no need to trash a poster for stating the obvious. I also wouldn’t be too concerned about what is a “better look” as the purpose of the forum is to share information about the admissions process. While you are no doubt a Tulane alumni/parent/fan/supporter, you should be able to appreciate that it is frustrating for students with higher stats to be deferred based solely on whether admissions thinks that they have shown the university enough love (or more likely whether they are willing to commit to paying full tuition in ED). It is helpful to get perspective from all students and parents (whether positive or negative). The ability to compare notes helps the rest of us understand what is going on.

@bmcalumna The Paul Tulane and Dean’s Scholarship decisions came out in January last year. This means that Regular Decision candidates would not be in the running.

@bmcalumna - look at post #23 from this thread 2 yrs ago, A student that was deferred, got in and won the DHS. Sounds like she took steps to convince Tulane of her interest without ED.

wrote my why tulane about being in new orleans and how going to tulane could help broaden my perspectives when i come back to work in cincinnati, my hometown.

Am I the only one who got accepted with an ACT<30?! I’m gonna be the dumbest one on campus.

@Paigemonaem, let that be the last time you put yourself down. You are among the top college recruits in the nation to even get accepted to Tulane, and the ACT in any event is predictive of only freshman grades. (Not Sophomore, Junior or Senior)

The real take-away I want you to get from this post, though, is that the person who discovers what he or she is passionate about, pursues it, and is therefore intellectually curious about it, dedicated to it, persistent, and ultimately confident about growth in that field and making contributions to it, that person will run circles around someone with a faux intellectual dog tag embodied in a standardized test with none of the above.

If none of that means anything to you right now, I do hope it does one day! Congrats on the Tulane admit and best of luck to you!

EA Admitted with $24K and Honors College
Demonstrated Interest: campus visit, alumni interview.
Tulane is first choice, but couldn’t attend without some $.
Applied for DHS
ACT: 35
GPA: 3.8 UW, 4.3 W (Cambridge program/like IB, but less rigorous)
Two Varsity Sports: Golf (Captain, Jr. and Sr. Year), Basketball Jr./Sr. year
Volunteering was very topical: Citizens Climate Lobby (Lobbied Florida representative and Senator to pass a carbon fee and dividend). Attended a 3 week workshop via a stipend to create a climate action plan for Hialeah
Good essay about overcoming hardship.

Very dyslexic and attended a clinical reading school for 4 years before mainstreaming back into public school.

Both Parents attended Tulane and active alumni.

@bmcalumna I do hope your DD flips to acceptance and merit. I read that happened as RD decisions started to roll out.

My daughter got deferred from Early Action. Does anyone know if the deadline to complete the continued interest form and move to Regular Decision is January 1, 2020, or January 6, 2020? I know it’s January 6 to move to Early Decision 2.

My daughter was accepted EA; ACT score 32, UWGPA 3.5, resident of Louisiana. No merit granted. Lots of demonstrated interest. Residents of La have a few specific paths offered to La residents only, so we are HOPING she didn’t receive merit because of she’s being considered in these other paths. Best of luck to everyone here.

Deferred EA. ACT 32, 4.0 GPA. OOS. Multiple APs. Did everything to demonstrate interest but visit campus. Very discouraging.
