@Bwildered1 many very strong candidates were deferred. Hoping you hear better news with RD!
Even if the scholarship esssys were submitted early/on time?
So an EA application that’s deferred to RD won’t get looked at?
Wow. That’s depressing.
@bmcalumna I don’t think that is true. There was an instance last year where and applicant was deffered but was later admitted with the DHS scholarship. I think you just need to fill out the interest form to make sure the application is still in queue.
@bmcalumna just making sure you see this from @gratefulmama
Daughter accepted EA! IB full diploma student, 30 ACT, 4.1 weighted GPA, White, no merit scholarship, But did not apply for one because ACT isn’t top-notch. Attended local admissions presentation and did an alumni interview. She really researched the school and has some compelling reasons to go. Very active and creative student. Will probably go if she doesn’t get into BU ED2. I get the sense that it truly is a holistic process and they’re not just looking for a top scores, filling quotas, etc.
Deferred
35 ACT
98 GPA weighted
Pretty good Ecs, why Tulane, letters of rec
Visited after app was due
Received an email today saying to check my portal, so I logged on and saw that I was admitted and received invitation to honors college w 24000 scholarship. Very confused as I thought I had to wait til April for a decision. Did this happen to anyone else?
@senior0313 – My S had a friend accepted yesterday as well who, like you, had been deferred EA. I believe acceptances are rolling for deferred/regular applicants. Congrats!
@senior0313 did you send a letter indicating you continued interest after your deferment? Just curious. Congratulations!!!
Thank you!! I was drafting a letter to send to my admissions counselor ab how my interest in Tulane was still strong but didn’t send it yet. All I did was fill out the continued interest form on the portal.
This happened to me too! Accepted to Honors Program with $24k/yr. I also had a 35 ACT and a 4.38 W GPA. Not mad!
Congratulations on your admission after deferral and thank you for letting us all know that admissions decisions could be coming before April!
Does anyone else find the EA / ED / RD gamesmanship from Tulane off putting? Feels very bait and switch to me, and has definitely led my DD to rethink her interest. Like the other strong applicants, she has plenty of excellent options, so why make her feel like a pawn in the race to lower the acceptance rate? Yuck, Tulane. Reflects poorly.
I don’t think you can lay this just at Tulane’s feet, except for the fact you are experiencing from Tulane. Reading across CC and talking with my DD classmates, I see so many colleges doing this. Also with so many of them extending their deadlines for EA and ED and RD, it is getting ridiculous, like they only want numbers and not students. So I don’t think it is all Tulane.
The past several cycles, Tulane has been using deferrals to later fill in the class rather than pulling from a waitlist. It is keeping options open for qualified applicants while the class is taking shape and then extending offers as the needs and numbers become more clear. You can see several examples of that in the recent posts in this thread. If applicants are not committed enough to provide evidence of continued interest, they are letting Tulane know that they are pursuing other options or weren’t all that engaged in the first place. Why should it waste time, energy and money pursuing them when there are others similarly qualified who are making active attempts to demonstrate that they want to join the community?
With its number of applicants, Tulane has already made quite a bit of progress on the acceptance rate. Now it is working on increasing its yield which is good business when demand is increasing. It is trying to be smart about who it extends offers to, focusing on the qualified applicants who are focused on Tulane.
Given these circumstances, where demand is significant and on the rise but not yet to the level of the T20s who can fill half of their class through ED, what strategy would you have them employ as an alternative?
Agree with @phisicaca and @KKreis. I will say one improvement over last year is picking the class from deferrals rather than waitlist. Many schools picked from the waitlist which meant of people didn’t have a clear picture of their acceptances until April or May.
To everyone’s point, Tulane is playing the same game as many of the top 100 schools. We also have to look at ourselves as contributing to that game by applying to so many different schools, when we never intended to go to some of them, or were shopping to see who can give us the best deal.
Tulane must be doing something right, as it’s students are consistently rated among the happiest, most engaged in community service, among those who love their college and with the best quality of life. However they are choosing to build their community, it seems to be working. Building by stats alone isn’t going to get you the same results.
Any more EA deferrals accepted yet?
When are deferral notifications supposed to come out?
Where deferrals acceptances those who changed to EDII?
*Were. It doesn’t let me edit. lol
