Turkish "SAT" Critique Could Lead to Jail Time for Band

Lots of American students complain about the SAT, but needn’t fear prosecution. Not so in Turkey, it appears.

And this is exactly why Turkey cannot let AKP gain power. If they do we will start to see a lot of similar things happening. Freedom of speech is being persecuted by this anti-secular manyak party.

No wonder everybody refuses its admission to EU…there are so many violations of standard human rights there, it’s crazy…

Don’t let something like this give you a misconception of Turkey as a whole. Human rights violations are not commonplace, although this action may give those looking in a bad impression. Turkey is a very modern European country with its foundations based on secularism, freedom, and liberty. By accepting Turkey into the European Union, the EU would end any chances of Turkey’s foundations being destroyed by a backwards-thinking party. I don’t mean to start a debate, but did our own president not endorse torture (epitome of a human rights violation)?

begum–and not to debate either, but I was just thinking this weekend about the Ottoman Empire, and how history would ultimately view the United States and its imperial worldview…

I plan to do a little reading on the Ottoman Empire soon!

I suggest "Paris 1919: Six Months That Changed the World "
by Margaret MacMillan

For Turks, their SAT is the ONLY determinant of where they go to college. My cousin lives there, and he luckily did well.

just out of curiosity, what would happen in the united states if a band made a song that went on like “college board, eat my ass”?

I just got back from visiting a friend who lives in Turkey, and human rights issues aside, the test they take is much different than the SAT. First of all, as was mentioned earlier, it is the only thing that determines which colleges students are accepted to. Because of this, many students take an entire year after high school to study for it. It’s interesting that we think that too much weight is sometimes put on the SAT here in the USA, whereas it’s almost irrelevant compared to the test in Turkey.

Also, I’m told that the results of this test also determine what you’re able to major in. So, for example, someone might take the test and want to be an engineer. There may be some schools that their scores would grant them admission to, but their scores might not get them into the school’s engineering program.

I think it’s completely crazy, but who knows. I’d like to see someone argue that it’s a good idea.

That system is similar to the system of many European countries, is it not? As far as I am aware, the United States is one of the only countries that has the “all encompassing” college acceptance reviews. Most other places rely almost completely on test scores.

“And this is exactly why Turkey cannot let AKP gain power.”

WTH? If there is any party that actually cares about such petty insults towards the state, it’s MHP, very closely followed by CHP. Trust me, AKP is not the party you should be worried about when it comes to human rights and especially free speech.

“Turkey is a very modern European country with its foundations based on secularism, freedom, and liberty”
Come on you can’t seriously believe this…the above example is just another violation of human rights added to the hundreds of inhumane acts towards the Kurds
