Also what channels do you normally get?

I don’t know about how many people actually have TVs, I know I will though.

As for the channels, you get basic cable at $16.50/month. Here is the list: [Cable Television Channels at U.Va.](<a href=“ITSWeb Home - UVA ITS”>http://www.itc.virginia.edu/commserv/television/ongrounds.html)

My roomate is bringing a TV. Any suggestions on the best way to handle the cable bill. I would rather just give him a one time payment for the semester and be done, but I might be missing something.

I’m not sure he ordered cable. Is it too late?

The way we’re doing it is I bought the Fridge/Microwave, he brought a TV and pays for cable.

You should still be able to order cable.

You should be able to order cable at any point during the year. There’s no easy way to say who pays the cable, but I suggest that the one who brings the TV pays it. That way if for some reason they take the TV home, the other person isn’t screwed out of their cable. I think it’s a one-time payment, not by semester. It’s like 16 bucks, it’s not a big deal.

is there any way to get tivo? or another thing that can record without having to revert to setting VCR players and whatnot?

That doesn’t make any sense.

db, isn’t Tivo a 3rd party hardware device?

TiVo! I completely forgot! I don’t want to bring mine 2500 miles, but how will I live without it Maybe a trip down to Best Buy the first week is in order.

You should be able to get it, just bring one from home, or add a new one to your subscription. The only problem is the availability of network jacks, you’ll need to use wireless with your laptop.

Am I the only person who really doesn’t care about TV? So much good stuff is streamed online these days (even on legitimate, free sites) and Netflix is pretty sweet in its own right. TV is so diluted and…boring.

My roommate and I got a cable splitter so we could both have cable and a TV and we alternate who pays every month (it gets billed to her and I give her a $20 every other month).

HaHa…I use the term Tivo and DVR interchangeably too. Is it possible to rent a DVR? I got a tuner in my laptop just in case my roommate and I like different stuff.

haha sorry i’m like vistany here. My DVR comes with my satellite. so anyone wanna explain tivo?

a tivo thing is $150 + monthly subscription?! w-t-f.

I’m with you Cav, the only reason I had a TV first year was because my room mate insisted on it. I hardly ever watch it, and if i need something it is usually online anyways. I have a nice HD res computer monitor and adapter for my gaming needs. Neither me or my roommate will be bringing up a TV this year.

TiVo is just a separate DVR box, it has slightly better features than the DVR from the satellite company, but they charge something like $15/month to be able to use it. Personally, I have TiVo in my room, but it doesn’t record in HD, so I mainly use the DVR built into the satellite on the main tv, if it’s not HD, it’s not worth watching.

Look into “Slingbox”. (google that). You hook it into your TV at home and can watch TV on your computer. I have it and it works great. Especially good for watching all those Yankee games that won’t be shown in VA

No. I could care less about TV.

So true.

Same boat.

I second Sling Box, it works great! I’ve used it for about a year now, and haven’t had any trouble watching TV when I’m not home. They even have an application for Windows Mobile, so you can watch TV on your smart phone (with an unlimited data plan) where ever you want…now they just need something for iPhone.
