TV Series Suggestions?

D2 (ninth grade) and I are looking for a new TV series to watch together. We watched all seasons of The West Wing and Battlestar Gallactica, and loved both. I don’t think she would go for a crime show (we watched a couple of NCIS episodes, and she was not interested). Firefly would have been a good choice, but I have seen all of them and she has watched most online. She refused to watch Star Trek (a prejudice with no basis whatsoever that I can determine, as she seems to like all other sci fi - - she did thaw a bit and enjoyed the recent movie, but will not watch any more of the “older” stuff). I don’t think a sitcom like Seinfeld or Friends or Cheers would appeal to either of us. Oh, we liked Gilmore Girls pretty well, too.

We would like something that has several seasons available for rent out already (call us spoiled, we do not want to wait for new episodes to air).

Any suggestions based on this information? We have watched very little TV over the past 10-15 years, so don’t assume we have seen series that are a bit older. Thanks!

Huh…we watched Star Trek reruns for years as a family, and discussed them. Star Trek has a strong tendency towards ethical dilemmas, which make for great discussions. Voyager was our favorite.

How about Dawson’s Creek?

Caprica is the new BSG spin off.

Castle is supposed to be great (starring the preacher from Buffy).

Bones is a sweet little detective show. Castle is supposed to be like that.

For something “edgier,” we and our D loves Dexter. But warning…it’s very dark and graphic. SHowtime = nudity and corpses.

Modern Family is supposed to be awesome.

The Office is a must-watch.

How about Friday Night Lights?

I was going to suggest Gilmore Girls. My 10 grader loves the old episodes.
How about one of the DeGrassi series.
My girls also like One Tree Hill.
My oldest in HS loved all the old Law and Order.

if she liked West Wing, then a brief trip down the John Adams series from HBO might be of interest… it is only 3 DVD’s with 3-4 hours on each one…if I remember correctly…

several of my girlfriends used to love watching Ally McBeal with their daughters… I only have sons, so, can’t make a solid recommendation…

La Femme Nikita was definitely fun to watch… and the British Robin Hood, while ridiculous on some levels, was also fun…

Six Feet Under-- I’ve only seen a few shows, but they were definitely interesting. HBO, though, so may have “adult” content
Grey’s Anatomy, kind of a guilty pleasure because it’s so preposterous.
Bones is a favorite here too.
Numbers, for that college angle-- (Caltech professors solving crimes!)

We never watch TV, but we’re really enjoying Castle. (Firefly fans here.)

We started off DVDs by watching all the Startreks. If you haven’t seen Babylon 5 we really enjoyed that - you can even see Chekov playing a bad guy! We’ve gone on to watch all the Joss Whedon shows - Buffy and Angel and Dollhouse. Buffy first two seasons are a wonderful critique of high school. We loved Battlestar Gallactica until the last episode. Oh well. Anyway about then we ran out of good sci fi. We watch the Star Gate shows, but they are 2nd rate IMO.

I’ve always wanted to see The West Wing. I was reading books to small fry when it was on the first time round.

One old show we really, really enjoyed watching was MASH. It’s aged surprisingly well, I thought.

Right now we are watching How I met your Mother. It’s very funny. I guess it’s a sitcom, but we are enjoying it.

Might she like some of the old British costume dramas? Something like Upstairs Downstairs or some of the old Masterpiece Theater productions?

Stargate SG-1 and then Atlantis. Longest running SciFi show. 15 seasons. SG-1, seasons 1-10 are on Hulu.

Slings and Arrows is a very funny Canadian show about a theatre company. I learned about it here on CC. It’s on Netflix.

My 18 yr old D loves Lost, Friday Night Lights, Prison Break and Gossip Girl DVDs. Never really watched One Tree Hill but has been suggested to her. She bought House Season one for us to start.

How about Freaks and Geeks? If you haven’t seen it, you’re in for a treat.

“From the Earth to the Moon”- for those of you who have HBO, you can watch it via On Demand. I actually bought the 5 part DVD series after my sister bugged me so much to watch it.
It’s a 50 million dollar production, produced by Tom Hanks, the “Original Wives Club” segment is directed by Sally Fields.
This is not for science nerds. It’s compelling story about the 60’s and our race to the moon. Absolutely, fantastic!!! Give it a try, and all those snowed in with HBO- find it.

By the way, my sister is the most Avid West Wing fan,and has watched many episodes three time. She is obsessed, and she loved From the Earth to the Moon!!!

My daughter and I enjoyed watching Everwood together, though occasionally it went off track–it may be available on DVD since it went off the air several years ago.

Buffy, and then Angel. Some of the best written TV out there.

My So Called Life (only 19 episodes, but excellent TV – my daughter and her friends loved it). Same with Freaks and Geeks. Very realistic and entertaining looks at high school life.

Northern Exposure – great mix of comedy and drama.

Lost – by the time you catch up, maybe the final season will be on dvd.

Mad Men. Two seasons on dvd, third will probably be out this spring. Well written, well acted – but the attention to detail when bringing the 60s back to life is incredible.

Veronica Mars – the first season in particular is innovative and well-written.

How 'bout ER? Northern Exposure? LA Law? Northern Exposure?

I agree. My family made fun of me when I gave it to dh for Christmas one year, but then they all became total addicts!

I second the recommendations for Friday Night Lights and Gilmore Girls.

BTW,I could give SJChess Mom’s sister a run for her money on TWW - best series ever and I’ve watched them all at least 3 times!

Kyle XY was an extremely popular SciFi show - it was on the ABC Family series but canceled after three seasons. I think that it’s aimed at high-school age teens but it’s interesting for adults too.
