The PBS series about life in the Channel Islands during WWII is called Island at War.

I skimmed the thread and along the lines of the BBC/PBS - we love the Jeeves and Wooster series.

Another vote for these shows that have already been mentioned:
[ul]
[li]Buffy the Vampire Slayer. If you like Joss Whedon, you will love this. I don’t like vampire shows either, but this is so much more than a show about vampires.[/li][li]Angel. If you do try Buffy and like it, you will be sad when it ends. But then you will remember that you have the entire Angel series to watch, and you will be happy again.[/li][li]Veronica Mars. This is a fun series about a teenage girl who helps her detective dad, and does detective work on her own for her friends. That sounds hokey when I read it, but my teenage son and I really enjoyed watching this series.[/li][li]Burn Notice. A USA network spy show. This one is a lot of fun too. I love the core cast. The main character is a “burned” (not literally) spy by the name of Michael Weston. His mother is played by the actress who played Cagney (or was it Lacey?) in the old detective show Cagney and Lacey. A recent episode featured Tyne Daly, who played Lacey (or was it Cagney?). Loved that episode![/li][li]Psych. Another USA network show – this time about detectives – that is a lot of fun. One of the main characters is played by Dule Hill, who played Charlie on West Wing.[/li][li]Sports Night. This is one of my all-time favorite dramadies. I recommend it highly. As has been noted, it’s an Aaron Sorkin show, so if you liked West Wing, you will surely like this show.[/li][/ul]

Some shows that I don’t think have been mentioned:
[ul]
[li]Farscape. Absolutely one of my all-time favorite shows; in my top three with Firefly and Battlestar Galatica. If you liked Firefly, I think you will love Farscape. [/li][li]Newsradio. Another great sitcom. The show was never the same for me after Phil Hartman’s tragic death and I stopped watching it, but until then, it was great.[/li][li]Brideshead Revisited. I absolutely loved this. Jeremy Irons and Anthony Andrews were amazing, as was the rest of the cast. [/li][/ul]

Finally, a couple shows that I have really enjoyed watching with my 17-year-old son, a high school senior, but which might be a little intense for a ninth-grader:

[ul]
[li]Dexter. This is a terrific show, but it’s definitely intense. The first episode especially might turn you off. The main character is a blood-spatter expert for a police department, and there is quite a lot of blood! I stuck with this show after the first episode, though, and now I am hooked. It is truly riveting. (I see that another poster watches this with her 17-year-old, and that someone else warns that it is dark and edgy, so it might not be a good idea to watch with a younger teen. But it is great!)[/li][li]Breaking Bad is another amazing show that I watch with my 17-year-old. I think it is the best show on tv today. But it is extremely intense, and might be a bit much for a 9th grader. [/li][/ul]

Ally McBeal, Early Edition, Roots. As some have mentioned - Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, Freaks and Geeks.

Sodiumfree - agree with you - Sports Night was great. I am so glad to see Josh Charles back on television in The Good Wife.

Which network brings Breaking Bad? I want to see that and will have to wait for a marathon unless it is On Demand.

I admit that I loved “WKRP in Cincinnati.” I laugh just thinking about the turkey drop.

The Sopranos-The. best. TV. show. ever.

cartera45 – yes, I was glad to see Josh Charles on The Good Wife as well! From the promos before the season started, I didn’t expect to like that show, but I am enjoying it. I’ve never seen Six Feet Under, but knowing that Peter Krause was in the cast makes me think I should put that on my to-watch list, too.

Breaking Bad is on AMC. It is also available on Amazon On Demand.

Nope - that would be “The Wire” but probably not interesting to a 9th grader.

Ha! That sounds like something on Cinemax After Dark

American Dreams…set in Philly in the '60’s. The teenage daughter Meg was a dancer on American Bandstand. We loved the series. It only lasted three seasons.

What is the On Demand that you referred to in post # 65? (I assumed it was Amazon On Demand.)

I also loved American Dreams. But then I loved Friday Night Lights and the OP didn’t, so they might not like that one.

I agree that The Good Wife wasn’t something I thought I’d enjoy but I do.

okay this is a good one-- Primeval-- British science fiction series with drama, humor and dodos.
and I second the nomination of NewsRadio. CC parents will like the scene where a strait-laced character admits to having a criminal record. She broke into a federal post office-- to get her SAT scores.

This is such a nice list, so many great suggestions. I have heard of, but never seen, Breaking Bad, Veronica Mars, and Psych, and now I really want to see them. (A co-worker says to try Breaking Bad and my son swears I would like Psych.) I need to watch for opportunities to check these out. :)

Then again, too much tv could cut into my time on College Confidential…

What is the On Demand that you referred to in post # 65?

Comcast On Demand. I wasn’t familiar with Amazon On Demand and it just struck me as funny.

Addicted to “Dexter” and “Weeds”. Too many Dexters in a row can be too much though!

My 12th and 9th grade Ds love Fringe, Mentalist, Lie To Me and many more. Of course we also will watch some of the awful teen type shows and have a great laugh over how bad they are.

Tonight’s the night.

My daughter discovered season one reruns of Dexter on DirecTV’s 101 in the fall of her senior year (2007). Then my husband and I got hooked on it and added Showtime just to see season two. It is still our favorite show to watch together during the fall.

Daughter is now watching season three of Queer as Folk at college. I am working my way through Firefly and bemoaning the loss of Dollhouse. Also have season one of True Blood to watch (I’ve read all the books).

Degrassi is fun to watch with a teen.

My D loved The Wonder Years, and the year before she left for college she made me watch every episode with her.

We loved watching Fraiser, Ally McBeal, Arrested Development, 8 Simple Rules, and The DeGrassi collections. Now D wants me to start watching Weeds. I am very far behind, but she loves the show.

American Family

I was just thinking about “The Wonder Years” and what a great show that was…

H bought me some Season 1 of “Evening Shade”, another favorite. I think this weekend with being snowed in (and I dont watch football), I might watch and see if it’s as good as I remembered.
