Two random questions

I am done with the recommended running plan, and I am trying to decide how I will continue to train before I-Day. Does anyone know if it is better to work on longer distance(8,9,10)miles or to work on speed at shorter distances(3,4 miles).

Does the navy have any jobs for officers that are involved with search and rescue besides pilots. I have heard that EOD and other special operations teams work in SAR. I know this is a long way off, but I was just curious if this was true.

Just keep running…long/short…and do tons of push ups/pull ups/situps…and just be in as great a shape as you can be in… and you will be fine…

Humidity is gross though…

To question one, my suggestion is that you blend your training around a combination of distances and short runs with speed, check out this web site for more info: http://www.halhigdon.com/crosscountry/cross.htm</a>. I believe working on conditioning and endurance will serve you well. Good luck and congratulations on your appointment.

Both, but if you are up to running 4 miles, you should be OK for Plebe Summer. If you enjoy running, then add distance but also work on speed at distances of up to 3 miles.

Whatever you do, DON’T OVERTRAIN. Hurting yourself at this stage will really be bad.

SAR is normally reserved to the SAR swimmers, which are all enlistedmen. They go to a VERY difficult school to be qualified, and they are very proud of it.

I don’t think EOD has a role in SAR, but they have their own sorts of fun.

Be aware, however: Special Operations (as opposed to Special Warfare) is just as competetive to get at USNA as SEAL (SPECWAR).

Thanks for the help

you might want to work in some swimming time into your schedule, or weight training. Keep up with the running and other suggestions offered above. Most importantly, keep up the academics.

I usually run mon/wed/fri, and swim tues/thurs, so I should be ok. Does lifting really matter if I am doing pushups, pullups ect.?

For Plebe Summer, you’re probably better off doing pushups, situps, etc., simply because that’s what you’ll be doing a lot of.

and when Zaph says a lot, he (she?) means a lottt

I’m a “he”. ;)

personally i like to run faster than longer. I started out running short distances (3-4 miles) at a good pace (6:15-6:30 miles splits) and and just slowly added distance while keeping that pace. im up to running around 7 miles at that same pace. (i set a goal to run a local 10k race in under 40 min)

You should be fine, then.

3-4 miles is SHORT?

sorry Z, wasnt sure. but yea 3-4 is a long run and going at a 6:30/mile for 7(!) miles is fantastic.

Yea, but you ought to see the Zee dance in his spiderperson suit!:eek:

Don’t worry. Minus a ball bat, it’s hard to hurt that old salt.

That wasn’t me, ya smart**!

;)

I asked my son about physical preparation. He said just be really fit. However, they will just stick you in a harder group the more fit you are so there is no way to win.

What “harder group”?

Zaphod, I don’t know…Thats just what he told me. He also said that they will find something to harass the plebes about…Just try to stay under the radar in all things and don’t fake injuries to get out of doing stuff.

It still was probably more intense when you were there, I imagine.

Can’t say. Maybe, maybe not.

What he said about finding SOMETHING to harass them about is true, though.

(Like Horshack from the back of the class…) Ew, Ew! I know this one! Ew! The plebes are divided into speed groups. 1-4, fastest to slowest. If you look, you see that the really tall ones are in the 1 group, the shorter ones in the 4 group…but they can move between groups, they are not assigned. Have you noticed my sign off? THAT IS OUR EXPERIENCE. Please don’t jump on me if a) things have changed b) I am WRONG c) you don’t like me or d) you think I have had too much merlot.(Well, I have…

I think the 4 group is just reserved for swimmers. From Alaska. Who aren’t used to the heat and humidity. BUT THAT IS JUST OUR EXPERIENCE. :)
