UArts Audition today 1/17/09

Hello to everyone on this thread. My son had his audition today at Uarts. We went with him and he left at 9:30 with the other MT kids. He didn’t finish until 3:30! (He got a call-back). He told us that he met with a second group of the UArts staff - he thinks the MT Director. Was hoping that some of you/your children were there. He felt like Audition went well and that the UArts people were really great-very supportive and friendly. He was asked to sing both of his songs again and repeat his monologue on the call-back. He also mentioned that the kids at this audition were also nice - talked more to each other. (Luckily, we live ijust over the bridge in NJ and went home after lunch with some relatives in Philly-- picked him up later). He is on his way to Ithaca for Audition tomorrow! Hoping to see if anyone else had similar experience today —it was a very long day!(And freezing out!)

Maril!
He got a call -back! That is wonderful!!! Do you mind if I ask what selections he sang?

My daughter’s audition is scheduled for Jan. 31st. She’s actually rehearsing 4 songs. She hasn’t decided which two she’s going to go with. Plus, we thought if you were called back, the judges may ask her to sing two other selections.

When will he know if he has been accepted in to UArts? Did they give him a timeframe.

This is soooooooo exciting . . . for the kids and the parents!

Hi, robinsnipesperry —
The UArts people said today that if you have your FAFSA completed your child should hear from them in about a month.(Which I think sounds good since everyone hopes their child will have at least one of their school choices accept them). Like everyone else, I have found this site to be s0o helpful and in a way, comforting for us (the parents). I try to pass along info to my son when I think it will be beneficial to him without trying to stress him out. This was only his second audition and I’m glad that UArts made him feel pretty good. It was a long day, though so tell your D to be prepared. As for the songs he sang today — I can’t remember his choices (believe it or not, he is the type of kid who decides once he’s there! He has at least 5 up-tempos and 5 ballads in his binder. He left with my husband and older son who is in on break --for Ithaca–I have to ask him which he sang!) Good luck to your D, also! Maril

So I need to have my FAFSA completed prior to my D’s audition?

Correction - My D needs to have her FAFSA completed prior to her audition?

Sorry I didn’t explain better —you don’t need to have it done before her audition but they did emphasize that the sooner the better .(You can estimate and then change it). Two of my S’s school choices actually required the FAFSA be done by Feb. 1st. (We already submitted it with estimated taxes, etc. since we knew the 2 other schools wanted it in early). Hope this info helps.

Thank you for the heads up! We’ll finish it up this upcoming week!

I wish your son the best! And I’ll be sure to share my D’s experience with you after her audition.

If you think of anything else you’d like to share, please do! Again, thank you!

Maril - congratulations to your S on his call back. My S auditioned on 12/6 and it was a very long day with the call back system. He did hear on 1/10 that he was accepted. One of the reasons we scheduled the audition early was that U Arts does do rolling admissions. Best of luck to your S!

Robinsnipesperry - Your daughter should only need two songs. Under the call back system the kids only get to do one song and one monologue. Then, based on that, they do a call back for early afternoon. At the 12/6 audition it seemed that 30 plus kids auditioned and 6 were called back. At the call back my son was asked to sing his other song but was not asked to repeat his first one. He did do his second monologue and then repeat his first. They did ask him to improvise a bit with both monologues. I think the most important thing (easily said) is to relax and have fun with it. My S said the staff and students were all very friendly and supportive. Good luck to your daughter.

Hi, Glad to hear your S got an acceptance. I hope that mine will, too! Where else is your S applying?
Robinsnipesperry—just wanted to mention thyat there were 48 kids for MT yesterday and 20 got call backs (I guess the numbers change with each audition)

just wanted to report on my U arts audition that was the 17th. I was a great day. I wasnt finished until about 4pm. at 830 we checked in and filled out some paperwork. we were all taken to a studio for a brief group warm up. then we were taken to a holding room and 3 at a time went to different rooms to audition. There were 3 rooms going at once. I was asked for one song and one monologue. After I auditioned I headed out to get some lunch at a pizza place with some nice boys I had met. The call back list was said to be posted at 1230. So we all sat and waited for the time to tick by. At 1230 we went back to the 6th floor to check the sheet (which ended up being posted at 1pm). I myself got a callback as did my 2 new friends. They narrowed it down form 50 kids to 20. Half of us went back to sing and monologue more, and the other half went to dance.
I went to a different panel of auditioners this time. I sang 2 songs and did 2 monologues. One of the panel members gave me a few notes and I redid one of my monologues. Then they asked me to come sit near them and they asked me a few questions. THEN I went to dance. It was a fairly simply combo, and we were broken down into groups of 4.
THEN it was over!
All in all it was a really great and painless audition process!

sonlovesmt—I keep hearing about how friendly the staff and students are. That is so good to know. The kids are under enough pressure and it’s so helpful to know that they’ll be in the presence of caring compassionate people. Hard to believe only 6 kids were called back!

Meril—20 call-backs out of 48 sounds a little better! :o)

tinysinger—Congratulations on your call back! What a full day! I have to ask: how were you able to eat when you’re waiting on news like this!!! We wish you the best!

All,
Thanks so much for the info regarding the 12/6 and the 1/17 auditions. I’ll be sure to pass it on to my D.

Honestly, all that waiting around and NOT eating made me hungry. I dont generally eat more than an apple the morning I have auditions, plus going out in search of food killed time!

Congrats, tinysinger. I’m the Mom of one of the boys who got the call back, also. Don’t know if you were in his group but it’s nice to hear that you also had a good experience. (My S said he thought that only 5-6 boys got a call back so if you were with a boy named Adam that is my son). Best of luck to you on any future Auditions…I don’t know how you kids are doing this but I certainly hope that everyone has good experiences and some choices! Where else are you Auditioning?

I was with david and ryan. I am also auditioning at U buffalo, Ithaca, Pace, Fredonia, and BOCO! just five to go! I didnt meet any other transfers at the audition this weekend I seemed to the oldest one there. It was strange to be in a room of high schoolers again. It was refreshing to be honest, no one was jaded by college yet!

Hi! it’s david!!!

UArts audition process was long, but I had a great time. and heres the thing i learned. don’t be shy to talk to people. i made two really good friends at an audition! auditions can be really scary and not fun at all. but if you sit down and strike up a conversation with someone it makes the process a lot more enjoyable.

my callback was different from the others I have read. I did two monologues and two songs. They worked with me on one of my monos and one of my songs. I am not sure if that is good or bad. but I think the attention was good…i’m trying not to read into anything too much.

but just have fun and talk to the people you are auditioning with because most likely you will see them again at some other audition!

Sorry but I believe I was incorrect in posting the 12/6 call back numbers. I believe that there were actually 8 called back out of the about 30 auditioning (not sure of the exact number). However, of the 8 called back, two indicated that they were asked to possibly consider another major that day after they completed the call back audition. That’s probably why I was thinking 6. I d0 not want to downsize the odds any more than they are and am not sure what, if anything, being asked to consider another major means. Glad to see that they called back more on 1/17. Again, sorry for the “misinformation.”

deleted post

D and I got back late last night from 1/17 audition. D also had a callback! Her experience was also slightly different from those described above. After the brief group intro at 9am the majors were split (theatre, dance and music). The theatre group then walked to another building where they had a group warm-up and then were split up into two groups (@25 each) for the singing/acting part of the audition.

My D said she was asked to sing her ENTIRE ballad and then do her monologue. She said that the auditors said thank-you very much and she went out of the room. No sooner had she left the room then she was called back! They asked her to do about 32 bars of her uptempo and they asked her some questions (D said the auditors were very nice and friendly).

It was about 11:45 when she was finished. The kids were told that the call-back list would be posted by 12:30. D was called back. She said that about 4-5 guys and 15 girls were called back I think out of 50 total.

At the callback D had the dance audition first. Then she auditioned in front of two different auditors. She was asked to sing both of her songs: ballad and uptempo IN FULL and then both of her monologues. She said they worked with her on one of her monologues and then there was an interview.

D enjoyed her audition at UARTS and she says she also met tinysinger, David and Ryan.

We stayed at the Doubletree which was a perfect location for us especially since parents were not allowed to be around and it was a LONG day! (D was finished at 3:45!). I was glad to be able to walk back to the hotel.

Who was your daughter? Or what was she wearing might be a better question!

TXKatsMom…I remember your daughter! Texas girl! She was in my group when we danced!
