UBC or McGill?

I have a decision to make by the end of this week. I have deferred my my acceptance to McGill Bachelor of Arts Program, and I have also accepted my admission to UBC’s Bachelor of Arts program. I must decide whether I should take a gap year to work and earn money and then go to McGill in 2015 ~or~ go to UBC this September.
I am from Vancouver and graduated high school in 2014. I started school a year early, so I am a year younger than other seniors. I would like to go away for university but that is not an option for me this year. If I go to UBC I will be living at home, but I will join a sorority.

update oops, I did not include a question in the original post.
What do you think the advantages/disadvantages of working for a year would be?

Hi Vancitygirl,

There are a few advantages of working for a year: obviously, you can make some money… but other than that, if you haven’t decided what you want to study yet, it gives you time to consider your options.

However, the main disadvantage is that the work experience you get will probably not be anything too relevant to what you want to study and the money you make likely won’t be much to write home about… Also: you can always work part-time while at university.

I highly recommend living in residence if possible - it’s a great way to get involved in campus life and making friends.

As for your UBC or McGill question: I can only speak to my experience at UBC and it was incredible! That being said, I know people who went to McGill who absolutely loved it too - they said great things about the nightlife in town… however, they also said those winters can be a little tough to adapt to. Given your username, I imagine you already know Vancouver better than I do.

And if you definitely want to be part of a sorority, I think UBC has the largest Greek system in Canada (which is still much smaller than lots of US schools). It’s a tough decision and you’ve been accepted into two GREAT schools!

Good luck with your decision!
