UC and CSU Non-Transferable Community College Courses

Hi I attend a community college in California and am planning to apply to UC and CSU next year (with TAG to Davis). I’m a mechanical engineering major and I have my whole schedule for both years planned out. The only thing concerning me is that in the assessment test in the beginning, I was placed in the highest math (transferable) but second highest english (non-transferable). So I am taking the English class (Writing 201) now as a prerequisite which is not transferable but is for the transferable English class (Writing 1).

My questions are simple.

  1. As it is non-transferable and only a prerequisite, can I just get a "C" in the class so I can get into the transferable English course next semester, or will that hurt my GPA?
  2. And when I apply, do I have to input this class on the application, with the grade received? And if so, will it affect my chances of getting in?

KEY:

WRITING 201 - NON-TRANSFERABLE, PREREQUISITE FOR WRITING 1, TAKING NOW

WRITING 1 - TRANSFERABLE, TAKING NEXT SEMESTER

See last paragraph here http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/counselors/q-and-a/evaluation/#3

  1. will not hurt your GPA.
  2. you MUST enter all classes on the UCTAP with grade received. It will not affect your chances of getting in.

However, doing well in the preparatory course will help you do better in the transferable course.

Thank you, now I have a follow up question. I want to apply to out of state schools, specifically university of Illinois Urbana champagne and university of Texas Austin. When I apply, do I input my no transferable courses too? And will that affect my gpa?

Because uc and csu understand the articulation of course but out of states like these do not. Will they take my nontransferable into consideration or will they somehow know not to add it to my gpa?
