Do you not see the giant bold red text that says “ATTENTION: All applicants for the fall 2016 term (and beyond) will receive a confirmation email from UC Berkeley with login credentials to the new student application portal, MAP@Berkeley. For more details, see: admissions.berkeley.edu/applicationfaqs” at the top?
MyBerkeleyApplication is last year’s application website. This year you should have MAP account. If you try to make an account from now, you’re definitely too late.
@Hiroaki0422 Is correct. Berkeley has a separate TAU of sorts that was due on Jan 31 (subsequently extended to February 2). The only way one could have filled it out was via MAP@Berkeley. It’s safe to say that anyone who didn’t do this had their application thrown in the trash.
If I want to update my classes for next quarter (some that I put aren't being offered) who exactly do I e-mail? Or do I not e-mail and just change them on the app?
As for changing them on the app: do I change them on MAP@Berkeley or the TAU on the app or both?
You're going to wait to email admissions. Let them know that you won't be able to take those particular classes because they aren't being offered. It's vital that you let them know ASAP, particularly if these classes have any relation to your major.
I would update your TAU after you email admissions at each respective school you applied to. From my understanding, you cannot edit the classes you listed on MAP (when I try to click on them, it says "Registration is no longer available because the registration deadline has passed.").
@Cheolf so e-mailing admissions@berkeley and changing the TAU is sufficient?
I just did that, so hopefully all is good. I’m just worried because one of the classes that isn’t offered for spring quarter at my school (thus, me having to change my schedule) IS a major requirement (take 2 out of 4 of the classes offered, one of those)… however, hopefully it shouldn’t be an issue because I’ve already fulfilled all my major requirements (taking 3 of the classes offered) and so I just wanted to take that just for my own sake. I didn’t exactly need it though. I hope that is apparent to admissions haha.
@gracenw - We have the same major and similar stats. Which pre-reqs are you missing?
I do think having the pre-reqs you can take completed are important to Berkley but your E.C. and volunteer service are really strong. UCs like to see an upward grade trend so that will help us a bit hopefully. I hope we both get in!
@sbccstudent19 I’m missing SOC 300 and SOC 305, but 305 isn’t available at my school and I couldn’t get into any of the SOC 300 classes at my school with my schedule. I’m really nervous about not having 300
I hope we both get in too! I have seen barely any sociology majors on here so it’s nice to see someone with the same major
@goldencub really appreciate your insight! Thank you so much. I actually got ahead of myself, because I tested so low on the entrance exam at my school, I still have to take elementary and intermediate algebra before taking a transferrable math course. Do you know any colleges where I could take the algebra simultaneously, and knock them out at once?
@eruditehooper No idea. I would recommend P/NPing all non college-level courses, though. I have a B in Intermediate Algebra from high school (perhaps attributable to teenage angst) that looks incredibly ugly on my record. It would also enable you to not have to work too hard in the classes. Taking one over the summer might be a good idea, as well. It depends, I guess - what’s your major again?
@hdoan24 It depends - from what to what? Generally, if both majors are in the same college, it shouldn’t be too difficult (with capped majors highly unlikely - one shouldn’t apply to Cal as a Gender and Women’s Studies major, intending to switch to CS after they’re admitted). If you’re switching from, say, GWS to English, it’s generally pretty doable, so long as you have (or will have) the prereqs completed.
@goldencub thinking of going in environmental science. However you don’t think P/Np will look bad on my overall transcript? Something they would frown upon in my lower division math classes?
Sorry for the late join. I’m also a transfer student who already transferred (fall 2015). I was just curious to see how this years transfer students were doing. I never posted anything on last years thread as I was nervous on my outcome. So thus I will post my LAST years qualifications (and little more than necessary so you guys can build your own outcome ;] ):
Major : Mechanical Engineering
GPA: 3.65? (sorry i don’t exactly remember EXACTLY but it’s around this)
IGETC: mmm no. It didn’t matter for my major considering it’s pushed on engineers to focus on their major prereqs.
Major Prereqs: All completed + All Strongly Recommended
EC: SO MUCH EC!!! 2 jobs a semesters, Student senate, volunteering, internship, 2 clubs, etc. Did this for every semester. This was definitely my strong side and I’ve dedicated so much time it’s crazy.
Personal Statement: 8/10
TAG: UCD (approved)
Applied: San Jose State University, Cal Poly Pomona, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, UC Davis, UC San Diego, UC Santa Barbara, UCLA, UC Berkeley
Acceptance: All of them
My last year in CC was incredibly overwhelming and though I love that my EC was strong, it definitely crushed me on my last semester very very badly (2 jobs, 2 different CC’s, 3 different EC’s). I learned my lesson to not do above and beyond if I don’t have time to balance it all. I was told by one of my counselors that the “strongly recommended” just meant “required” so I did them. Umm, I don’t know what to else to say, except that for those who aren’t within that “gpa spectrum” for their major (for ME’s its like 3.85?) that don’t lose hope. I’ve worked incredibly hard for my grades but had also dedicated to my community and that’s what pushed me. I definitely did a 180 since high school (didn’t get into any colleges at that time). Anywho hope this helps and you can ask questions :). Go transfer Students!!!
how were you able to get all the strongly recommended courses? I will have most of them but still missing a couple because they aren’t offered anywhere I have checked within 50 miles. I’m also a mechanical engineering major
