UC Berkeley 2016 Transfer Thread

@briank82
If you have ever taken an upper-division course from 4 years institution, the excessive unit policy would be applied, and it will negatively affect the transfer decision if you have more than 70 units by the time of transferring.

@billydee They might look upon curing cancer favorably - that is, if you have created a startup and funded production of the cure at an affordable price. Otherwise, don’t report it.

In all seriousness - what are your stats, and what’s your major? I would submit the outstanding math student award, but you may already be strong as it is, I dunno. That’s a fairly noteworthy award.

@Hiroaki0422 “Most programs will not offer admission to students who have earned an excess of 80 UC transferable semester units prior to enrollment” - all lower div units are capped at 70. So long as he completes under 10 units at that 4-year, he should be fine.

But one should always double check with the UCs directly to be sure about something like this.

@Hiroaki0422 Ugh. I have like 110 lower division semester units. I knew there was a cap, but I was unaware that even taking just 2 classes at a 4-year would make that an issue.

I’ve come across a pretty cool opportunity but it sucks that I can’t take advantage of it, when we’re talking about just two classes. Thanks for the info.

@goldencub Ahh, I think that’s an interesting point. I emailed Haas, but I’m not sure how responsive they are. I might need to call or just visit.

@briank82,

They will advise against it.

  1. Your conditions of admissions will require you to be in good standing at all attended schools, which would include your prospected summer campus, and getting a a subpar grade will jeopardize your admission.
  2. Additionally even if you don't get bad grades, if you report your courses (which they will also require as part of your CoA), you run the risk of having a registration block or hold placed against you because they will receive your final transcripts from the summer campus very close to the start of or even during the the fall semester.

The only summer programs they will recommend are the Transfer Edge program at UCB and selected “prep” transition classes that are offered at some of the other UCs. (For instance: I know UCLA has a summer “transition to upper division math” class the Berkeley openly advertises.)

Edit: Never mind, I misunderstood the unit cap policy - you’re correct @Hiroaki0422 . I thought all lower-div units were capped at 70, and upper-divs beyond that would be okay to take so long as they don’t make one reach 80 units. Apparently having any upper-div units with >80 units total will put one over the unit maximum…

@briank82, it’s only a problem if you have UPPER division units from a 4 year. I have 33 units from a CSU from my freshman year of college, all LOWER division, and all the UC’s said they don’t care.

oooooh. Interesting point, @naregian. I was just assuming all classes at a 4 year university are considered upper division (why, I don’t know…). Regardless, @SDGoldenBear brings up some really interesting points of why it could be unfavorable.

@goldencub

Yeah, I suppose it couldn’t hurt to email admissions…worst case scenario is probably just it having no effect whatsoever. I think I’ll do that, actually.

These are my stats:

GPA: 3.86
College: L&S
Major: Math (planning to declare Philosophy as a second major at the beginning of my second semester after transfer)
Major GPA: 4.0
ECs: President of a really active Phi Theta Kappa chapter, math tutor
Pre-Reqs: Completing my last one this semester (and finishing off a full sequence of Physics w/Calc just to be safe, as the UC math major transfer guidelines recommend having a full sequence of a science or econ)
Applied: UCB, UCI, UCLA, UCSD

I’m applying from an out-of-state community college. Berkeley is absolutely my dream school and the admissions decision wait is killing me. Thank you for the advice!!

What’s your background/prospective major? (I tried searching the thread to see if you’d said already, but couldn’t find it if you had.)

hey guys, two questions:
1/ I just received my winter grades, should I update them on my TAU application?
2/ For spring quarter I was unable to get the classes I reported that I would take on the MAP@Berkeley (none of them are major prerequisites) ? should I email them?
Thankss :slight_smile:

@billydee Ah, well good luck. I have yet to see an OOS CC transfer be accepted to Berkeley, but to be fair, I haven’t really looked - and you’ve made yourself very competitive. Definitely email them, as you have a fairly unique background, and the award may help.

I’m a Philosophy major. 4.0, all prerequisites completed by the end of the Spring (with one completed at Berkeley with an A). GE completed via IGETC by the end of the Spring. Good extracurriculars as well. I’ve gotten into UCSB so far. Berkeley is my first choice by a large margin, so I’ll be nervous as hell when decision time nears.

@VeniVidiVici1

  1. TAU is closed.
  2. Yes, email Berkeley and everywhere else you applied. You should be fine, but you really need to email them. You can also let them know of your grades (if they’re good - if not, I probably wouldn’t do it, but it’s up to you, and it’s generally viewed as something one should do).

Thaanks :slight_smile: :slight_smile:

@goldencub LOL if you cure cancer, you don’t need college man

heey guys, so i currently dont work at my part time job now, should i update this on tau or somehow notify UC’s about it?

Nah

@screencap1 They don’t care and it doesn’t change anything.

Hey guys i applied to UC Berkeley and i just recently realized that i did not do the Transfer Application Update on the UC Berkeley website but i did it on the UC application website, i realize that the email said to do both but i must have forgotten to do it. I missed the deadline but does that mean i am instantly disqualified or what will happen to me application or admission?

@Cgs16 I would contact Berkeley immediately. If there is no way for you to update it, I would say admission is highly unlikely, but anything can happen.

I updated it on the UC application website but not the berkeley page. It does allow me to update it but it says it is past deadline
