UC Berkeley 2016 Transfer Thread

guys, do I need to pay the $100 deposit first in order to create my CalNet id?

@hitherto You have to create a bMail account. You can do so via this link: https://bconnected.berkeley.edu . Go to Quick links at the top right of the screen and select “create a google account”.

@accessforbidden THANK YOU! ^:)^

Hey guys, sorry if this is an obvious question but just for reassurance… is the SIR deadline for transfers May 2nd or June 1st?

@allison16 June 1st.

$210??? ugh.

@KoLo113 A majority of us are going to call/email admissions on Monday to resolve this issue. You should as well.

@Sanla124 No kids here. We’re 4th priority, which is listed below.

"Clients are housed according to the following priority below:

Single (unpartnered) students with children.
Married or partnered students with children.
Single (unpartnered) student under the age of 18, dependent and living with parent or guardian.
Married or partnered students without children.
Single (unpartnered) students with a dependent over 18.
Single (unpartnered) re-entry student and graduate students (eligible for one-bedroom apartments only).
Postdoctoral fellows with children.
Postdoctoral fellows without children."

I was able to apply today though, which is good. It’s first come, first served (and based on priority), so we’ll see what happens.

Thanks!

Where are the MCB majors transferring this fall at? I’ve seen so many Haas, EECS, CS, Econ, Math, Sociology, and oddly history but not a lot of MCB.

Hello CC, I have a BIG problem and was wondering if any of you know cases similar to mine.

I got accepted to L&S fall 2016 but won’t be able to complete my IGETC by this spring because of Area 1A English Composition.
During my first year in college at out of state university, I was required to take english composition class for international students which was equivalent to regular english composition but just not the course title.
When I came back to Community College in California, they accepted that class as ENGL 100 and I was able to get a passalong for it. (CSU GE was certified with that pass along)
However, I just found out that my IGETC certification was denied because the english class is intended for non-native students.

In rare cases it seems like they accept partial certification and let the students finish the required classes either during summer or in Cal.
I wanted to ask for help from anyone before I fill in the update form on MAP@BERKELEY because I’m scared I might be rescinded…
I’m expecting the worst and extremely scared.
Anybody know where or how to seek help from the staff in this situation?

@dullyddong I would see if you can do a substitution waiver petition at your CC to get Eng1A credit with the class you took at CSU. At my CC students can petition to get credit for courses they deem as equivalent, the form had to be approved by deans and such, but it’s great for students who feel that they shouldn’t have to take a class they believe counts the same as one at another institution.

@dullyddong if you cannot, you must update your MAP Berkeley. Also talk to an advisor at L&S. However, be prepared to possibly lose your admission.

Classes are indeed filling up but I wouldn’t take class enrollment counts seriously until around June 6th when they will be an accurate predictor of your chances.

They may add new sections as needed and there can also be instructor changes that will cause massive shifts in enrollment.

That said, I cannot emphasize how you should NOT expect to be able to add ANY course from a capped major that you were not originally pre-admitted into.

@jonuni94:

They reserve around 10-15 spaces in each section for Pre-Econ transfers. Since your an Econ pre-admit, you’ll get a registration key at CalSO that will allow you to bypass the waitlist and automatically enroll in your choice of Econ courses with “available” reserved sports.The ones sweating it out for spots will be the non-Econ transfer admits which historically won’t be able to add the course.

You also don’t get any additional priority by visiting a counselor prior to orientation. The reason new admits can’t register yet is due to having their orientation requirement clear which a counselor can only clear for you during the actual orientation. Outside of veterans and athletes, the only thing in your control for registration priority is your CalSO date.

@Sanla124 & @briank82:

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but the couples I’ve seen at University Village without kids have some sort of disability or special circumstances. There always seems to be only enough sports to only fill the top two priorities every year.

The new housing options at Mills College might be an avenue you want to explore as they can physically accommodate couples.

@dullydong:

I would argue with your IGETC counselor at your CCC. Berkeley doesn’t evaluate the IETC certifications and they merely accept what the CCCs send over. Your best shot of avoiding a possible rescind is by negotiating with your IGETC coordinator.

I was admitted Friday (WOOHOO!) but my acceptance letter only says I was admitted to “The College of Letters and Science”. I applied as a History of Art and Architecture major and recently I was thinking of changing my major to English because of my interest in creative writing. How would I go about doing this? Am I still considered an Art History major or am I able to change it?

Check out your English class here. If your course was trasferable and have complete all other IGETC courses, then you should have also completed Berkeley GE/Breadth (check out the articulation is assist) which can replace to IGETC. So it should not be a big deal.
If your English course was not transferable, the best move from now is to contact admission officer and explain your situation immediately.

@justamuggle:

Since English is not capped, you can change as long as you meet all the requirements prior to declaration. In your case this would be English 45A or 45B, and one of the following: English 45A, 45B, 45C, or Shakespeare.

You would want to take those two requirements and two prerequisite courses from your original intended major in your first semester. Once you meet the requirements at the conclusion of Fall you then will be able to formally declare either the English major History or Art major.

Note that double majoring requires additional requirements and might even be impossible depending on your unit counts and available options. Consult with department advisers from BOTH majors prior to attempting to double major.

@SDGoldenBear so we can register for summer classes only after attending CalSo? :frowning:
I’m switching my major to philosophy and must take PHIL 25B in the summer since it will not be offered in the fall. I’m worried that the class gets full before I get a chance to register.
Thanks a lot!

@SDGoldenBear Do you know if Legal Studies is a capped major? I applied as a Political Science major, but I want to switch to Legal Studies.

@VeniVidiVici1:

You can actually register right now. If sports are dwindling down for the summer course I suggest registering as a non-UC student and then applying for Transfer Edge to have your fees retroactively reduced to UC-student rates later on.

If you feel you can bide your time longer, apply for Transfer Edge now and wait for their enrollment email which will outline your exact steps.

@accessforbidden:

Legal Studies is not capped. You should have a fairly straight forward transition as Legal Studies is usually easier to declare than Poli Sci. The requirements can be found here: http://legalstudies.berkeley.edu/?page_id=468

Anyone know how we make our email?
