Do you guys have to pay for your SIR? somehow it did not charge me.
@iccricri I don’t have anyone assigned too.
@SDGoldenBear Got it, glad they reserve the spaces for us! By the way, which backup major do you think is the best for econ transfers? I was looking at ORMS that you mentioned previously in this thread for alternate major pre-req to take first semester, however, looking at ASSIST it looks like that major requires two more Calc courses and other pre-reqs… So I guess my question really is, which backup major would have the least amount of pre-reqs left as an econ transfer that is non-impacted(no GPA cap)?
It kind of pains to even think about having a backup as I really enjoy econ material… however, if it comes down to it, I would rather be prepared. I want to eventually get a tech job in sales/marketing if that makes any difference.
Happy to be admitted, but is anyone here freaking out over grade deflation?
@jonuni94 Environmental Economics and Policy
@SDGoldenBear thank you for being so very informative and helpful on this thread. I have the following concern that need your advice/ others on this thread. I am admitted as CS under L&S. So as one of the req to declare major I need to take CS61A and CS 70 with GPA 3.3. I want to start over this Summer. However I check that this class in already waiting list. I will try to register anyway (how and when? … still not sure… ).
However I read somewhere that we need to have pre-approval (written?) from UCB before we take any summer class at UCB (is it true?). So how do proceed… I can not wait for the Cal SO for summer session (too late). I plan to contact Transfer Edge on Monday to register and ask. Is it the correct way to proceed? or should I go to college adviser or ? (i have no one assigned to me either). You mentioned above that we can register as non UC student and correct it after we apply through Transfer Edge (I assume all transfers who want to do summer session must do so under Transfer Edge). Don’t we need prior approval from UCB (which dept?)?. If we are on wait list and we register for back up courses for summer (how do I know what other classes are required and can be taken for my intended major?). I suppose we can cancel later on after we get the class and will be refunded?
I am international and I also need to process my visa and I20 etc to re-enter USA, before I can go home to see my parents on May 27. This also complicate matters (time line is short).
Thank you very much for your time.
@SDGoldenBear My conditions of admission states that summer courses are not allowed “for the purpose of completing a minimum of 60 UC-transferable semester units, IGETC, UC Reciprocity, or General Education/Breadth requirements”. Doesn’t this mean that I can take a course over the summer for any other reason? I’m planning on studying abroad which will involve receiving credit for a course taken.
So much bribery…
My girlfriend made me a UCLA blanket back in February for my birthday. One of my sister’s friends’ dad came over today and gave me a UCLA keychain and hat. These people know Cal is my #1.
I need free Cal gear!
I have a question, can someone please help me? I heard that you can appeal your decision if you get rejected. Does anyone know how this works? Like is ANYONE able to appeal their decision?
@SDGoldenBear Thank you so much for your help! I have registered for CalSo in June
nothing earlier was available!!
Do i need CalSo to register for classes and housing?
Also the EOP website you have isnt working
it says i need permission.
I will shoot an email later!! But do you know where to look if i have EOP? I am finding it really hard to use Cal Central !!
@tracy1017 Thank you so much for answering my questions. I am a pre-med student as well and I think that it’s great you switched to Integrative Biology… it does make much more sense to do a major in something that will essentially help with the MCAT. I’ll definitely consider the path you took! Thanks once again for sharing your story.
If you don’t have one listed (yet), then they will probably assign you one later on should need to contact admissions with an issue.
I’d say Legal Studies is the least restrictive with a 2.0 GPA requirement and no first semester deadline but Poli-Econ is the most likely as a B- in IAS 45 (with a great Prof. in Beecher) should not be difficult. Poli-Econ works with your intended focus as well although I’d check if Media Studies is a viable alternative as it’s a better fit.
The registration form can be accessed here: https://mysummer.berkeley.edu/appFilter/initAppQuestionsSS.php
The need for pre-approval is determined within your conditions of admission and, if needed, is handled through admissions. However, even if it’s not needed, it’s still a good idea to let them know once you are formally enrolled in the summer course.
Contacting Transfer Edge is the probably the best course of action as procedure dictates that they will also contact admissions and fin-aid on your behalf and leave you with less legwork to do. As an admitted student, you don’t have to apply to Transfer Edge but it will reduce your summer tuition as it drops it from $480 per unit to $406 per unit and knocks about $70 off your summer enrollment fee.
Cancellations are easy. Just note the cancellation deadlines: http://summer.berkeley.edu/registration/schedule
You’ll have some work to do though as there is a significant waitlist for both courses over summer. If you enroll soon, I think you’ll eventually be able to add (both courses have around a 15% drop rate) but it won’t be guaranteed and it’s definitely a financial risk to have to invest in housing options that you ultimately might not need.
61A and 70 over summer is pretty brutal as well. I suggest just taking one of them first.
Looks like you are good to go but check the terms portion of your CoA to make sure it doesn’t state to contact your admissions officer for pre-approval.
It’s still generally a good idea to let them know once you are formally enrolled in the summer course as the registrar won’t evaluate non-approved non-UC transcripts in the Fall and admissions should be made aware that they will have an additional transcript to evaluate and pass on to the registrar.
You won’t be able to enroll in classes until your CalSO session. Unfortunately there are no loopholes around this that I’m aware of.
You shouldn’t need to attend CalSO to apply for housing as they are on separate systems. The housing application can be found here: https://portal.housing.berkeley.edu/
Definitely call EOP but in the meantime the eligibility requirements for EOP are met be meeting any one of the following:
- Low Income (Pell Grant or Dream Act eligible as verified by the Financial Aid and Scholarships Office)
- First Generation College Student (Parent(s) have not graduated from a four-year college or university in the United States)
- Historically Underrepresented University Students (African American, Chicano/Latino, and Native American Students)
Edit: Fixed a broken link
@SDGoldenBear, I just wanted to say thank you for all your help!
I had a question, could I go from Political Science to Political Economy? I have all the pre-reqs for the major out of the way. What would that look like? I know you have to wait to be approved when registering for classes to declare, so could I do it then?
Thank you!
How the hell do I not qualify for EOP?
My family is extremely financially disadvantage.
My whole family is Latino and even says in CalCentral that I’m Mexican/Latino.
I’m first gen.
But nothing?
@selimpride are we supposed to get an email or something for EOP?
Anyone in here reapply from last year and got in again?
Thank you for everything!!! @SDGoldenBear
@SDGoldenBear Do you happen to know when Regents decisions are usually released and also, if I change my status to housing off-campus, will my financial aid be decreased?
I just got into UCB as a Rhetoric Major with a GPA of 3.87! Im transferring from a Community College in Northern San Diego.
@blsUCtransfer I think mid-May.
