UC Berkeley 2016 Transfer Thread

Congrats to everyone that got in. I stalked the forum for awhile after my first post and I found a lot of the information to be useful. I look forward to seeing everyone the fall.

Is anyone else still getting use to the UCB portals? They are definitely different than anything I’ve ever used. It was rather confusing, but it is nice that they keep you signed in across all portals as long as you are on the same device.

In other news, it is now time to suffer through the housing/apartment hunting process…

@UCKnowledge Our numbers are growing! Though hopefully they don’t grow too much, it is nice not having to worry about fighting for seats during enrollment season.

Hi, all,

I was rejected by UC Berkeley this spring. Many people around me, some with lower GPAs, got in. They seemed to have the same qualifications that I did, although maybe their personal statements were better, I just don’t know. Specifically, I was wondering if I was rejected because as an application for Integrative Biology as as junior transfer, I didn’t complete ANY physics yet. The physics were planned for summer and fall. Biology majors at Berkeley are not REQUIRED to complete physics prior to transfer but it is “strongly recommended” (I did IGETC). Do you think that my application was immediately dismissed because of the lack of physics meaning that my major preparation was weaker than other candidates, and Berkeley received such a high number of applications that they just had to find some to get rid of? I haven’t heard of anyone who didn’t get their physics done and got accepted anyway, but I don’t know that many people that well. I’m just looking for some insight because I only applied to two schools, and I got into Davis. I’m just not sure that I want to attend Davis and wonder if I should hold out for Berkeley next year (I have to do my physics after finishing at Davis, anyway, so it’s not going to take me any longer). On the other hand, I got financial aid at Davis that totally covers my tuition and then some, and it IS a great school. But my commute is over an hour. Berkeley was the big prize, and I’m at the top of my class. Should I hold out for next year?

@sarah38 It definitely could have been not completing the recommend courses, but honestly UC Davis is an amazing school for the sciences and frankly, considering the fact that financial aid should cover the university costs, you could find plenty of quality apartments for comfortable prices in the area if you believe that commute might be too much.

Hi guys, I have not SIR yet but I am able to check my financial award. Under every award I got it says that it is conditional and it states that it is a conditional award and it wont be disbursed to student account until I complete a verification task, it also states that the award is subject to change. Anyone one else getting the same thing?

@TheVisionary thanks for the response! I’m a homeowner in Brentwood, with three kids in school so not possible:(
Will have to commute, then stay up late to study after putting the kids to bed. Did the drive yesterday and worried about falling asleep at the wheel. But… I know people drive it! I’m hoping someone will have some intel on this particular question.

accepted!!
Philosophy major
3.65 gpa

committed to ucla!

I’m currently taking classes at two community colleges. Will universities look at each college GPA separately or combine the two into one GPA as if I only attended one college? I’m pretty sure it’s the latter.

@ccAndronicus The latter. UCs consider your UC-transferable GPA, so non-transferable courses do not affect your GPA (but you need to report them).

@SDGoldenBear thanks a lot for your response.
I will contact Transfer Edge on Monday… and proceed to register for CS61A (I don’t mean to register for CS70 this summer). I will also prepare a back up course in case I don’t get CS61A. Fortunately housing is not yet a problem since I still have my Apt up to end of July and it is near UCB (my cc is Diablo Valley and I can commute for summer class).
However I do hope there is other back up course that are not so full so that my summer is not wasted.

Question: how do we know what other classes that I can take this summer that meet up my major requirements ? whom shall I ask ? CS advising?
thanks again.

First off congrats to everyone who got accepted! It only took me five years in the military after my first rejection to finally get in.

I have a few questions though, what is the email address at Berkeley I am supposed to have schools send my e-transcripts to?

My second question is that I sign into my calnet portal with my MAP ID and password. I SIR’d and it gives me the option to create my email, but when I click the link it says forbidden. Do I need an actual cal net login, not just my MAP login or should I just wait a day or so and see if it is accessible? Kind of frustrating, I’m so excited to get all of this stuff wrapped up!

Thanks in advance for any help or advice you can offer

I was accepted! Quick question: if I withdraw from my Geography class right now (currently have a D), and take it over the summer, will I still have my acceptance from UCB?

@Hector1201 Yep, but doesn’t Environmental Econ and Poli-econ have a GPA cap (impacted major)?

@SDGoldenBear Again, thank you so much! I looked in to Legal Studies and it seems I already have all pre-reqs done except Stat 20 which I’ll be taking for econ anyway which is great. For Media Studies, looks like I’m missing two pre-reqs which isn’t too bad either. I may take one of the Media Studies pre-reqs first semester to open my options to either Legal or Media Studies… although Media Studies seems more interesting now that I’ve read about it on L&S page… ties directly in to marketing/sales.

Is the GPA cap for Media Studies also a 2.0 such as Legal Studies?

@aancheta I’d read over your conditions of admission that comes with your acceptance in MAP, however, from my understanding we cannot take summer courses to fulfill requirements. Is this course for IGETC? For me it reads:

“Summer Session 2016: I understand that I may not attend Summer Sessions 2016 for the purpose of completing a minimum of 60 UC-transferable semester units, IGETC, UC Reciprocity, or General Education/Breadth requirements.”

Talk to a counselor at Berkeley today if possible and tell them your situation.

@Eodguy149 Firstly, thank you for your service. To answer your questions, I was not aware we could send transcripts electronically. Upon checking CalNet it shows “berkeleybound@berkeley.edu” as the Contact for the items where we must send in transcripts. That may be the email?

I SIR’d a few days ago but still getting: “This account cannot be accessed because we could not parse the login request.” when trying to click “Connect”. Is that what you get? I think many of us on here are still having that issue. I may contact them if it doesn’t get fixed in the next day or two. OR, are you still tying to create your CalNet (comes before doing bConnected)? If so, yes, that took about a day after SIR to allow me to create.

@jonuni94 You have to first create a Google account in order to connect. Go to this link: https://bconnected.berkeley.edu at the top right of the screen click “Quick Links” and on the pull down menu select “Create google account”.

@UCKnowledge what made you want to major in rhetoric? I briefly looked it up and it seems pretty interesting. What do you want to do with that degree and what interests you about it?

Anyone else doing a tour thing on Friday? Don’t know if it’s only my college

@accessforbidden Ahh I see, just did that. Thank you!

Also, for anyone interested I finally found the Cal transfer class of 2018 group on Facebook here:

Just replaced the *** with facebook url
