UC Berkeley 2016 Transfer Thread

I didn’t get a call!!!

@accessforbidden your username is frustrating because “forbidden” comes up every time I try to get my calnet ID. That’s keeping me from applying for housing. Gah!

@katastrophic42 I think I’ll probably opt for the dorms. I assume dorms are primarily composed of freshman and sophomores though so it may be a bit weird.

@katastrophic42 I’m getting the same thing, are we doing something wrong or do we just have to wait? I tried making a bconnected google account as well but when I try doing that it says “You are not currently eligible for a CalMail account.”

I got all of my transcripts and AP scores sent off today, the only thing left on my list is to make a CalNet ID. Frustrating.

Also, if any currently attending veteran knows the answer to this: If I am offered a transfer scholarship, will the school cut me a check since the GI bill pays all of my tuition or will the scholarship be applied and the GI bill pays the remaining balance? My two friends at UC Davis are getting their full scholarship amounts paid directly to them and I’m really hoping Berkeley is the same way. Would be nice to have some extra cash since I have a mortgage in Sacramento and will likely have to rent a room in Berkeley during the semester.

@Polemic my friend is an RA at Cal and he said that a lot of transfers live in the dorms.

Just a reminder that on-campus housing is NOT guaranteed for transfers. The last two years have had people left out in the cold. Start shopping around for off-campus housing even if you prefer on-campus housing.

@Polemic:

The housing staff reserves around 2-3 rooms per floor per high rise exclusively for transfer students. So that’s 5-9 transfers per floor living in 2-3 rooms.

@CCCtransfah

Check out https://www.megabus.com/ if you need some cheap transportation. The Oakland stop is easy access to Berkeley via BART.

@emiluna16

If you haven’t been assigned one yet, they will at a later time once you contact admissions with an issue. For now, I would just use the general email / phone number.

@forshevchenko @arashid142 how do we register for CalSO? thanks for info
@SDGoldenBear : I have taken history class at my CC that can qualify for American Culture requirement (that’ s what I heard from my friend) or do we have to take them at UCB? thanks again for info.

@SDGoldenBear I was told the Martinez commons and channing-bowditch are places majority of the transfers and upperclassmen live. Are you saying that even with priority we still would possibly not get housing?

@xela007

A list of approved AC courses can be found here: http://academic-senate.berkeley.edu/committees/amcult/approved-ac-courses-other-colleges

@accessforbidden

Unfortunately yes there is still a possibility of not getting a housing contract. The priority doesn’t mean much as it’s all a random lottery.

Wada (within Unit 2) has the highest concentration of transfers. Martinez, CD, and the I-house are probably next up.

So I’m stuck, can anyone help me possibly make one of the hardest decisions of my life?

I got into both UC Davis and UC Berkeley, Davis giving me a full ride and Berkeley I’d have to take 3k in loans just for tuition. If I go to Cal I’d most likely commute via BART from Vacaville (I’d take the North Concord Station). I live in Davis, and don’t have to pay rent with the campus being like 10 minutes away. I’d love to go to Berkeley for the education, but have heard of its issues with grade deflation as I’m looking in potentially going to law school after I graduate. I’m looking into either double majoring in Sociology and Public Policy or minoring in PP. Any advice from current Cal transfers would be greatly appreciated. I’m visiting this Saturday from the Honors Research Symposium, and heard it’s dead week so the campus won’t be super vibrant. I am finding myself going back and forth on the decisions, and am really having a hard time choosing one or the other. Thoughts??

@FT7325 Would you have to take loans to attend Berkeley?

I would pick Davis to graduate with no debt, honestly, unless you hate it there. Commuting is pretty terrible, and will be a serious impediment upon your time and energy. Also, yeah, Cal is probably more difficult than Davis academically, and your GPA may take a hit at Cal (or at least drop more than it would if you attended Davis).

@goldencub I’d have to take 6,000 in loans over the two years at Berkeley just for the tuition costs. Commuting will suck, but is it worth it for the education and prestige of Cal? Like I’m afraid I’d regret not going to Cal since its law school is so competitive to get into.

Has anyone here already made an appointment with an advisor in the college they were accepted to?

@Sanla124 does his finacial aid say anything about being conditional? Mine does so it has be worried. Btw I am a mom as well, I have a 5 year old girl. My husband and I are transferring, unfortunately he will be staying in Socal for the first 6 months and then we hope he gets accepted around Berkeley, so as you can imagine I am freaken out, its going to be hard the first few months. Will your husband be applying for Family housing?

Nvm just went back to ur message. I see that you will be applying. I will also be applying. Hope to see you around. :slight_smile:

@TheVisionary Yes that is what I thought too but when I called the advising office they told me that making an appointment with the advisor during May or June will be almost impossible, so participating the CalSO will be the fastest way to start registering for classes. It is not mandatory though… my bad.

@chaspion323

I think that may be department specific. I’ve never heard of anyone having a hard time meeting an adviser at the larger departments.

@FT7325 $6000 over the course of two years is nothing. I understand not wanting to take loans, but $6000 really is nothing in the world of student loans.

There is more to your decision than just student loans but if I were in your situation, I’d consider $0 and $6,000 to be be basically the same and then evaluate every other thing. A lot of people wouldn’t feel that way, but I would.

Of course, this like all this is relative. $0 and $6,000 are quite different, but when most students are finishing school with $20,000-$30,000+ in debt, it’s quite low and payments would be small (or you could pay it off aggressively and quick). Just my thoughts.

@SDGoldenBear thanks… yes I can use my History 124 for AC requirement. thanks again for very helpful info :slight_smile:
