UC Berkeley 2016 Transfer Thread

@topchoiceschool No. Only if you intend on living on campus.

For anyone who’s had their transcript mailed out. Has it been updated for any of you on the dashboard?

@Philosoup Are there any on campus apartments that have majority transfer students?

@topchoiceschool Pretty much Wada

Just wondering regarding the ECs: Can we list things from high school and do sports count if it isn’t competitive? Like if I play basketball but it isn’t on a formal team just among friends could I list that?

Im a spring admit and i want to take some classes during the summer at my community college. How do i formally request permission? I don’t have an adviser assigned to me. Is it just through the update form on map@berkelely?

I also recently academiclly renewed a class i took back in 2014. Its a lower level nontransferable math class. Do i need to include this on the transfer academic update form?

Also do our units get recalculated at Berkeley? Im noticing that the regular classes at community college are 3 units but those same classes at Berkeley are 4 units.

One last thing, many have mentioned that we have limited time to complete all required coursework to graduate. I was not aware of this. Where can i find this info?

Thanks!

@arashid142,

The only saved seats are for certain pre-majors in impacted subjects in L&S. Econ, Stats, Psych, ORMS, and IAS come into mind as the particularly hard to get ones.

@iccricri,

I would schedule a meeting with a counselor (any of them really) before your summer registration date as they will be very selective of which UC-transferrable courses you can take. (They will place you under higher standards as your a Berkeley admit now.) Skype appointments can also be scheduled if you cannot physically meet with a Berkeley counselor.

If this isn’t possible, you could also register but meet with a counselor prior to the drop deadline although this option will limit your choices they reject your initial class choices.

As far as the CCC units, with my personal experience, they rarely ever recalculate units. I took math and comp sci courses that gave me 5/4 semester units at CCC which are only 3 units at Berkeley and they kept the original unit counts.

Lastly the unit limits vary from college to college and L&S is the most restrictive. You should expect to only have 4 semesters to finish your degree as a transfer. They are very strict about the unit ceiling so plan accordingly.

The consequences are significantly more dire for Spring admits because they (normally) have to wait until the following summer to finish their requirements in the event they exceed the limit without completing the grad requirements. This is especially the case if your in a popular major that will prevent you from getting courses as a Berkeley Extension student.

@SDGoldenBear I’ve asked you this twice already, I think - but when will all current students have signed up for classes, again? You mention this date because we can then accurately gauge whether or not we’ll be able to get into certain classes.

Anyone know if we went to more than one high school, should we send transcripts from all of them or just the one we graduated from?

@emily2636 The school you graduated from should have the grades you received from your other school right? Send just the one you graduated from.

@SDGoldenBear i only want to take one course and its only a PE couse worth .5 units. The only reason i want to take it is because it is the only class i need to get my AA from my community college. On the transfer academic update form on map@berkelely it asks u if you r taking summer classes. I thought thats where we go to ask permission? Or we always need to actually talk to an adviser to get their permission in this matter?

@goldencub

I believe all current students have completed their Phase I registration as of May 29th. Only incoming freshmen and transfers have yet to have their Phase I appointments outright.

The current class capacities should be a good indicator of your chances but keep in mind that everyone can adjust their Phase I choices during open hours after their Phase I time. So in the cases of seniors and high unit juniors, they are probably checking at nights on some classes and mulling Phase I choices. (I know I am between a couple of Stats courses.)

@iccricri

It should be listed in your conditions of admission. With most UC-transferable courses, you need to explicitly ask a counselor (either in-person, via email, or through a Skype appointment) so they can incorporate it into your official transcript / conditions of admission. I don’t think it’s a necessary requirement with non UC-transferable courses, but you don’t lose anything by asking and making sure.

That said, I highly doubt it’s a UC-transferrable course since it’s 0.5 units. IMHO, you are safe to enroll but would still recommend going through the procedure with a counselor before the drop date in case is your course is an exemption.

Hey, so since we can use AP credits to satisfy courses, will those also go towards the 60 unit count provided the scores meet the requirements by UCB? Also will they look at Fall and Spring grades? My school does semesters so I don’t have a winter quarter.

Yes. AP scores are extremely flexible in that way. If you want them to count toward your unit minimum you are able to use them as such.

The UC’s will look at fall grades. You will have to update your application in early January to provide the grades you received for fall. Since they send out acceptance letters before spring semester ends they are not able to check those, that said they have you sign a contract where you agree to abide by certain GPA minimum in the spring semester to be able to transfer.

Thanks. Do you happen to know what the GPA we’re suppose to maintain is?

I think it depends person to person. I think the most common GPA required gpa is keeping a 3.0 average and all grades must be a C or above. That said, I’m a bit iffy on this knowledge. I’d have to ask my friends who got into Berkeley what their contract states to be sure.

Is anyone confused about adding classes? There’s like nothing in the my academics tab.

Does anybody know if we double major, can we use some of the same classes to fulfill requirements from both majors? Or are there limits set the prevent us from doing this?

Verify with a counselor for the specifics but generally you can overlap all lower division requirements (doesn’t usually apply to transfers since our lower division courses are predominantly taken at a CC) and up to two upper division courses with each additional major assuming the courses are approved requirements for both majors.

just out of curiosity, does taking honors classes help your chances of getting in at all?(transfer student from ccc)
