UC Berkeley 2016 Transfer Thread

For me the semester starts on Monday so I will be putting IP, but you guys are saying it says to put PL somewhere??.

@HaasBounded It went to spam for some reason, but I got it! And I will have the breadth done this semester, you? Haas actually hands out this sheet with the recommended education plan/degree requirements and it is pretty robust, there is hardly any room for “fun” classes so having to deal with breadth would really suck!

Apparently L&S ONLY takes full IGETC. They don’t accept partial. Good to know.

Also seems that one doesn’t necessarily have to complete IGETC - can do the L&S requirements instead., f

Hey, for anyone else applying to L&S and following IGETC - for the sciences, it’s split up into Physical and Biological Sciences. For both, they ask whether you have completed a lecture with a lab, or an infused course. In other words, it seems you HAVE to select that you’ve completed the lab for both fields, despite only completing the lab in one (at least in my case).

Did anyone find any way to bypass that? Or will you just talk about it in your comments section, or not at all?

@MikeSauce Yep, it was sent out a few hours ago. Glad to see you found it. No idea what way I’ll be going with the essay, I think it’ll be tough but fun in a weird way.

@HaasBounded I’ll have it all finished this semester. I didn’t wan to have to deal with those classes after transferring. Not having 5-7 extra classes to take on top of everything else during the same timeframe would have been brutal. Not sure how much it helps in terms of looking good on the application, but I just wanted to get it out of the way.

@MikeSauce Nice! and I will have it completed this semester as well. As for the PL/IP debate, on the Self Reported Academic Record in the Haas Supplement it says to put PL for the Spring 2016 classes. I was putting IP as well since I will be starting them soon, but it says to do PL for some reason.

Alright. I submitted. Good luck everybody. This feels like apps all over again.

@goldencub I took Marine Science without a lab to satisfy the physical science requirement, but i’m taking Anthro 1 with a separate Lab in the Spring to satisfy my bio science requirement. For the one without a lab, I didn’t put anything under Lab but explained in the additional comments that that is what I was told to do by BCC and how I’m doing it. Kind of a stupid layout.

I think its assuming that people are starting the winter quarter, I’ll probably give them a call on Monday about it.

@boxandwhiskers Okay good. Glad I’m not the only one who had that problem. I explained it in the additional comments and wrote N/A in the extra lab section.

@goldencub I have the same issue, and it’s made even worse by the fact that I’m using ap credit to fulfill a lab and a course. Let me know if you figure out what to do, if I don’t hear anything I’ll contact cal on Monday and let you all know

@Pastas Ah. Basically, I wrote N/A in the blank space, and explained it in the additional comments section (there was plenty of room, my response was long-winded).

I also wrote all of my class names exactly how they appeared on my transcripts (except not in caps). I didn’t want to take any chances.

@goldencub ok thanks for the insight. I’ll probably just call in to see what they say to play it safe. I’ll post on Monday what they say since it might help someone else out

Guys, I’m a little confused while filling out the Prereq form for Berkeley - I’m using a score of 3 to satisfy my science requirement for IGETC (which all good), but will that override the requirement of a 4/5 needed for one of my major prereqs (Psych)? I know @goldencub had a similar situation a few months ago but I ask this because there seems to be a mixup in what assist asks for my major and what the prereq form seems to be asking

P.S. This is for general biology

I had a question for the My Portal Berkeley thing for the General Education/Breadth - College of Letters & Science part.

For Arts and Humanities for IGETC you need 3 classes to fulfill the requirement. So far I have taken two only, BUT I do have AP credits that would fulfill it. I have already listed my English composition being fulfilled by an AP score.

I did not foresee I’d run into this dilemma (I totally thought I had the Arts/Hum thing down with classes) Anyways, I was wondering would it be better to list the AP score as the third Arts/Humanities fulfillment OR would it be better to change my TAU’s In Progress classes in order to then list a class that fills that category and mark it as IP for my spring quarter term (currently in winter quarter).

@themightybicycle No. You will still need a 4 or a 5 to clear the major requirement. Your assist page states that you need a 4 or 5 for your exam to get subject credit. You might have to take the class in the spring to finish your major reqs - and if you do, you won’t get units from your AP exam, because they don’t take duplicate credit.

Actually, I HIGHLY recommend taking Anthro 1: Physical Anthro, with a good professor if you’re able to. It was by far one of my favorite classes, and it seems it would clear your Bio req! It’s generally pretty easy, I think, but I guess that’ll vary with different CCs. If you do that, then you will keep your units from your AP exam. Your AP exam just can’t be used to clear the prereq.

In my case, I had a 3 in English Lit. Berkeley allows a score of a 4 or a 5 to clear English 1A, BUT this can be overridden if one is completing IGETC (which I am), as for IGETC, all one needs is a 3 to clear any requirement. If one is fulfilling the L&S requirements, then they are a bit more strict with AP credit, requiring a 4 or a 5 to grant subject credit for many classes.

@tooweirdyo Which AP score is it? English Lit?
I would do the latter, but I guess it depends.

Would it be better in the IGETC form to use an AP to satisfy something, or to put in a completed course?

For example for arts and humanities, would it be better to use “AP score 3/4/5” or “Introduction to Theater: A”?

I could easily fill out almost all of IGETC with just clicking “AP”, but would it be better to use courses? Because they’d see a lot more "A"s and grades? I’m a one year transfer, btw.

@solostish They just want to see that you will have IGETC completed. Essentially, it doesn’t matter, just make sure that everything is correct. Possibly go over things with a counselor if needed.

They will review your academic record from your actual application. These forms are just used to make sure you will finish IGETC, major reqs (as many as possible), and that you’ve done your TAU.

@themightybicycle why don’t you just use the class you used for the prereq for Igetc aswell as opposed to the ap exam? is it because you don’t have a lab, but the AP test includes lab? Your fear is that the igetc part will be overridden bc it would look like your taking a class that you have ap credit for? If this is your dilemma its quite an interesting one. I would call Berkeley

@goldenclub Thanks for the reply! Yes, it is English Lit, haha. And it’s a 4… so not even a 5. Thoughts? So you would also advise to change my TAU to account for planning to take a third Arts/Hum course in the spring? Btw, it’d be the only IP or Planned course for my IGETC fulfillments as I have everything else finished already.

@tooweirdyo Oh, so you can use it for either.

Well, you’ll have to take one or the other. It’d probably be more fun to take an Arts/Hum course instead of English 1A, as the latter is some fairly rudimentary stuff. It’s up to you, though. I would go for the third Arts/Hum course (and you need at least one Art course, if you haven’t taken any already - but you probably know that).
