UC Berkeley 2016 Transfer Thread

@goldencub @Pastas yes. On. The assist page, under Berkeley Psych, it has 2 biological requirements. There are 2 sections where it says take one of the following (Anthro 1, physiology, and a few other courses). Then, it says pick another one of the following, which consists of Mcellbi 61C & 64C). However, there are no articulated courses for these at CC. I am enrolled in Anthro 1 to fulfill this requirement next semester, but on the update for Berkeley, it says I need 2 courses apparently? I can either list 2 college level courses or 1 college level course + ap bio score of 4/5. Why is this? Why does it need 2 of the bio courses from the first section even though it only says pick 1 of the following? So confused

@goldencub
Did the issue with the labs occur while you were doing your TAU or did it occur while you were doing your ordinary application?

@themightybicycle I’m assuming on the Berkeley form, there’s just one section named something like “Biology” or “Biological Sciences”, and that there are only two courses under that? If so, they want one from each section. If none of the schools you attended offer a biopsych course that works, you’re in the clear. If they do, well, you need to check all assist pages from all cc’s you have attended, to see if they offer that requirement (the second one section in the bio category). If none do, you’re in the clear. Just write N/A in the course title and explain that it wasn’t available to you, or at any of the schools nearby.

If it is offered near a school close to you, or close to a CC you attended, try to take it. If not, you’re fine. They won’t hold that against you.

@JacobfromCA Just in Berkeley’s IGETC form page. Not in the app or the TAU.

@goldencub
Wait, were we supposed to fill out a form for IGETC along with our app?

For transferring to Berkeley from a CCC, what is the most important besides completing classes and making good grades? I am looking to transfer into the EECS computer science program (B.S.). Do extracurriculars and/or job experience matter much when transferring? Or is grades/class completion the main thing? Thanks

@goldencub I’m talking specifically about the major prereq form. For the biological sciences requirement portion of it, it asks whether i’ve taken two college courses to fufill the requirements, or if i’ve taken one college course + ap bio score of 4/5. the thing is, on assist, it clearly states that i only have to take 1 of the courses from each of the two sections. for the second section, no courses articulate? and i checked, and most other colleges do not articulate either. This is what it looks like:

BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES: Two courses

NOTES:

  • Students are required to take only two courses from the community college,

regardless of how many community college courses articulate to a single UC
    Berkeley course.
  • If enrollment in a lab is optional, the lab is not required for this major.

-The Biological Science requirement is also satisfied by a score of 4 or 5 on
the AP Biology exam for only one of the biological prerequisites.

-Students are still responsible for completing another Biological Science course
with a Neuroscience emphasis to satisfy this requirement. --> (this is what i’m talking about. this is the second section).
As a result, I enrolled in Anthro for the spring. I assume the second requirement is to be taken at UCB once the student transfers because there is no articulating course, right? What’s weird though is that neither of these two “neuroscience” emphasized courses are listed in the options when I’m filling the Berkeley update form. It’s asking to pick 2 courses from only the first section??? ASSIST SAYS ONLY 1 THOUGH.

Sorry for such a long and panicked post! but school doesn’t start for 10 more days so my counselor can’t help me till then and i’m dying lol :frowning:

How much do you guys it will affect my admission chances if I didn’t take 1 prequisite out of 4? It was never offered at my college and I’m enrolling at a separate college to try and take it there, but it’s looking unlikely that I’ll get in due to space. Major is Poli Sci, GPA 3.9, solid essays.

For the IGETC update, what should I put as the course title for a class whose title won’t fit in the given space? Should I abbreviate?

Also, any specific order we should list the classes in each category in? (Chronological, alphabetical, etc.)

@goldencub : can we go back and edit after we submit it (the MAP@ Berkeley update) ? and up to when? thanks for info

@themightybicycle That’s odd. Didn’t assist say you can’t use AP scores to satisfy your major reqs?

The only thing I can think of is that the prereq page views the regular biology course and a comparable neuroscience/biological psych courses as both falling under the Biological Sciences requirement.

If there are only two courses listed under the entire BS requirement, just put anthro. If they want you to have two courses for the first section (i.e. If the requirement is divided into 3 courses, 2 sections), put your AP Bio there too, I guess, and talk about it in the comments.

I dunno. Email them.

@Polemic I wouldn’t worry about it. If you’ve never taken courses at that other college that you just enrolled in (implied), then you won’t be penalized for not completing it. You have strong chances IMO. You could possibly complete it online somewhere?

@csmajortom I abbreviated using either what showed up on my transcripts (for the GE portion) or what showed up on Assist (for the prereq portion).

Order doesn’t matter, haha. Whatever you think works best.

@beth28 I don’t know. I haven’t looked. We can update the TAU until the 31st. I’m not sure about the MAP.

@JacobfromCA Berkeley should have sent you an email. For Berkeley’s portal (MAP@Berkeley), they have a few forms they want you to fill out. All of the info will be in the email. It’s required in addition to the TAU.

@beth28 I’ve been able to update the IGETC/GE supplement and Major Prereqs supplement as much as I want on the MAP page. I think they let you edit it as much as you want until the 31st, then you wont be able to.

@cberg97 Grades and prereq completion should be your priority. Check the assist.org articulation agreement between your CC to UCB.

Shoot for a 4.0, and complete all major requirements available to you. That’ll be tough in itself. EECS is very competitive. Some other people on here could probably provide better input, but basically, very high GPA/prereq completion + as many recommended courses as possible/GE completion should be your priority. If you can do internships in addition to all of that, then go for it, but it’s not required, and it’s not nearly as important as what I mentioned.

Is anyone else having this issue with the GE/Breadth requirement supplement page at MAP@Berkeley? I filled out everything, but when I completed everything, hit save, and then log out and then log back in, it keeps showing that I didn’t fill out the Biological Science part and therefor marks my supplement as incomplete. I keep filling it out, saving it, and then I go back to the page and it erases what I put (but everything else I filled out is saved).

@goldencub I see. Thank you so much!

Emergency!
For Computer Science in Letter & Science, more than 80 units are NOT acceptable?
I just heard about the maximum units and it is driving me crazy.
80 units are not enough for CS major (GETC, Math, Science, CS classes)
Any help? please

@csplzplz All CC coursework will be capped at 70 units (as in you’ll only receive 70 units after transferring), but you will receive subject credit. So you can complete all of your prereqs and take as many units as you want.

The 80 unit maximum only really applies to people transferring from 4-years, specifically if they have taken any upper-division coursework.

All lower-div coursework (all CC coursework) is capped at 70 units. Basically, if you’re at a CC, or you only took lower-div units, you’re fine.

@goldencub in the IGETC form, I’m listing a physics class that has an integrated lab. But it gives me a separate form area to enter in the lab portion. Should I just enter in the same information that I entered in for the lecture part? It’s a 4 unit class, so if I put that it was 4 units for the lecture and 4 for the lab, I don’t want them to think I took 8 units total for physics.

@csmajortom There should be a button that you can select for it, showing that you have a Lecture + Lab integrated class. If you leave it as you put it, they will definitely think you took 8 units for physics haha.
