@avc118 UCs do not care about W’s at all. They ignore them. Withdrawing will not affect your application in the least bit (assuming the class isn’t a prerequisite that otherwise would be unfulfilled).
It sounds like the wise decision in your case would be to withdraw.
In addition, if you do choose to withdraw, please make sure your TAU and Berkeley MAP reflect it.
This is a silly question but will it affect me negatively if I have updated/edited the TAU four times at this point? None of it is pertinent information that I’ve gotten wrong, just stupid things like changing from PL to IP, fixing a course number that I accidentally put wrong, etc…
@avc118 : According to a UCLA admissions representative I spoke with this fall, Ws can be problematic under the following circumstances:
-If it is a major prerequisite course
-If it is needed for you to complete IGETC (For some majors only. Not Engineering, Computer Science, or certain other high-unit majors. ASSIST will usually indicate whether this is the case for your major)
-If you withdrew from the same class in a previous term. (If this is your only W, obviously you wouldn’t have to worry about this)
It sounds like you have a very heavy workload, so I don’t see why it would a problem for you withdraw, assuming none of the above applies to your situation.
I don’t know how similar Berkely’s policies are to UCLA, but hopefully, this info can be helpful to someone.
if you have one in course in progress (for me it is a transferable math course), while transferring (statistics) will you get denied? (im applying next year)
I am not good at stats, I never took a statistics course. Lets say I was applying at UCLA as a History major with a 3.71 major. Their 25% is 3.5 and their 75% is 3.9. Their admit rate is 61%. What % chance would you give me to get in?
Hi guys, in the subject of the Ws. If I happened to drop a major prereq during the spring term and redone it with an A during the fall, is it perfectly fine? Or does it somewhat affect my application.
Just asking cause I am a little worried about that one W for my math.
@pleaseberkeley The 25%/75% refer to admitted students, not all students. You seem to be around the 50th percentile for ADMITTED students - which is good, and makes you very competitive.
@resonanx I’m not a stats major, so I’ll probably explain it poorly -
The 25th percentile (25%) represents the figure which 25% of data is either equal to or less than. If the 25%, for example, is 3.5, then 25% of all admitted applicants had a 3.5 or less. If the 75% figure is a 3.8, then 75% of admitted students had a 3.8 or less.
These figures represent the ADMITTED students - so if your GPA falls somewhere between the 25%-75% range, then you are competitive. If your GPA is higher, then you are competitive. If your GPA is lower, then you aren’t as competitive, but it’s definitely not impossible to get admitted. It all depends on a large number of factors, though. There are people with 4.0s who get rejected due to missing prereqs, etc.
The UCLA transfer profile only quantifies GPA. It does not, and cannot, quantify other factors that are important in the application. However, because GPA is a major factor in admission, one can make an educated guess about their chances given the UCLA admission profile (and also considering prereq completion, GE completion, personal statements, extracurriculars, etc.)
IAS 45 is a requirement for Poli Econ transfers. However, on ASSIST, it says that this course must be taken at Berkeley. On my Poli Econ supplemental app, I'm required to list that I've done a course for IAS 45. How do I approach this if ASSIST says that it can only be taken at Berkeley? I am confused about this. They can't penalize me for never taking the course at Berkeley while I was in community college, right? That'd be unfair.
They know that it must be taken at Berkeley. If it won’t let you submit without writing something in the box, just write N/A and clarify in the additional comments section.
I think they use the assist.org articulation agreement in evaluating your application. You won’t be penalized, don’t worry.
This one I'm freaking out about a bit. Apparently I need 4 semesters worth of foreign language for Poli Econ. It says on ASSIST that I can fulfill this requirement by taking foreign language in high school (I took 2 years of Spanish in high school), but on the supplemental app, there's no option for "took in high school". It's only "College Courses", "AP Exams", and "5 years of language in high school outside the US". Please help?
Select something else, or select nothing, and clarify in the additional comments section. The information on assist.org is correct.
For the IGETC form on the supplemental application, I fulfilled some requirements with AP courses. What do I put for "Department", "Course Number", "Course Title", "Semester or Quarter", "Units", "Grade", "College", "Term", and "Year"?
There should be an option to select AP units? There is on mine, or maybe that was just for English…
I recommend writing “______ AP EXAM SCORE OF _” (or don’t include the score if it doesn’t fit) in the Course Title box, and clarify all the details in the Additional Comments section.
