@themightybicycle Hey! I noticed you also mentioned that you were applying as Poli Econ. I had a quick question: Did you take 4 semesters (or 2 years) of foreign language in community college? I know I asked about the conflict with ASSIST, but I’m looking at Berkeley’s official Poli Econ undergrad requirements for their students and it’s saying something different in terms of the Foreign Language requirement. Thanks so much!
@Cheolf @AveryJessup Thanks! I did drop it. It is not even a UC transferable course, and definitely not a prerequisite. It’s a leadership training class. I thought it would look good on my resume but I guess it’s better to take it next time. Thank you for the help.
Do they tell you what GPA they calculated, so you can challenge it if you think they are wrong?
If you go on the Transfer Admission Planner and input everything it pumps out a GPA with a breakdown at the bottom in overall GPA, assist certified GPA, and UC GPA.
@SoCalDad2 @MikeSauce They don’t tell you the GPA they calculated, I don’t think… You should be able to see how many units you have been granted after you transfer, though. I don’t think a possible GPA miscalculation is grounds for appeal, unless one has a very good reason.
This seminar shows how UC’s review coursework and calculate GPA. It’s pretty helpful for general understanding of the process:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EKZU68F75-E
For CCC units, it is rather simple to calculate one’s GPA by determining what is transferable and what is not. All units taken at UC’s, too, are taken (naturally) into consideration, I think (I don’t see them refusing to take units from another UC, so I don’t know definitively, but it’s unlikely that they would refuse any UC units). It can get complicated when one is transferring from a 4-year college in a different system, or if they have units from them - such as CSU’s. The Transfer Admission Planner GPA is a good guide, but does not always give the GPA total that they will use in the application.
For example, if either of you are interested in the dull details, I have one non-transferable course that drags down my overall GPA, and I have a class taken at a UC. The assist certified GPA leaves out the non-transferable course, but it does not include the class taken at the UC. Similarly wrong, the overall GPA they list factors in the non-transferable course.
As I understand this, granting units or using classes in GPA calculation is at their discretion. If a student isn’t sure about which courses transfer over from a 4-year or OOS CC, I am fairly certain that one can email them to ask and clarify, but I don’t know much about that process at all. To reiterate, calculating one’s UC-transferable GPA is fairly straightforward if they only have CC/UC units - CSU’s can be a bit trickier, and OOS or other CA universities can be even trickier than that.
Most general, ordinary classes transfer over, regardless of the college (i.e. Intro to Psychology), whereas more off-the-wall classes may not be deemed transferable (such as, perhaps, some odd classes from an art school).
Sorry for the long-winded response.
Im currently taking math for Liberal Arts Majors. Its a transferable math course but the problem is that it is Spring semester right now. How much does this affect my application and chances? Anyone know? How bad is it to take your math course the semester before transferring? It is also worth mentioning that I will be taking it as a P/NP. From my understanding I get accepted/rejected before they see If I got an A/B/C/D/F/P/NP, whatever.
@tmcxpbs Hey! I’m actually not a Poli Econ major, I’m psychology haha. I was just referring to your first question, because for one of my requirements, there is no course articulated (my second biological requirement). There are two lists for bio requirements, and I need to take one course from each (according to assist). However, the berkeley update asks for two courses from the first list. So after doing some research (and @goldencub 's response), it seems as though the form is not made to go hand in hand with assist. So I simply put N/A for the second box, and mentioned this in the additional comments section.
Hi guys,
On the IGETC form, “I have completed a Physical Science lecture plus a separate lab course” means that the lab is a separate class right? And “I have completed a Physical Science lecture combined with a lab course” means that the lecture and the lab are one class right?
Thanks!
Hey all, I’m a current student at a community college in Los Angeles.
I’m hoping to transfer to UCLA or UC Berkeley and I’m going to apply this coming fall.
But there are things about me in order to determine my chances of admitting into UCLA or UC Berkeley
I’m an older student that returned to school to study really hard, I stopped going to school for about 5 years before I returned in 2014 Fall.
Before stop going to school I worked full time or two jobs and attended school part time.(24 units in 4 years)
I grew up from a dirt poor family and I worked to provide myself with pocket cash, help my family financially and to be a financially independent student.
I was an art major before but now I’m a business major and I never took major classes in STEM or English.
Before I left school my GPA was at 2.4
After I came back, my semester GPA has been 3.7 to 3.8 range per semester and I had a 4.0 past semester, working 30 hours a week.
My overall GPA at my school including long time ago units is 3.32, UC GPA of 3.24. But since I’ve returned as I said, my GPA has been 3.7 to 3.8 range.
I live by myself, I’m 28 and I work at a restaurant waiting tables as a server. I hate retail job and because I feel like I’m not as educated, incompetent I study my heart out and if I don’t get an A in an exam I get really upset.
Right now I’m taking precalculus and I have a B average in my course and I’m mad as hell. I still work so it bothers me specially in the winter. I understand the material, I know how to derive theorems but math is just like performing at a concert or at a sports match. I need to practice and review everyday in order to perform better. I’m trying to find co-workers to cover me and work and I’ll put in more time to solidify.
Although I only work two days out of the week part time during weekdays(but work 10 hours a day on friday saturdays and 5+ hours until late sunday night) it feels like I just don’t have enough time or I’m too tired to focus to produce quality studying hours to prepare for my exam
Anyways, here are list of classes I’ve taken and here are the grades.

I don’t smoke, I don’t like drinking, I rarely take vacations I don’t chase skirts much.
People think I’m boring and too serious about life but I work too hard to be spending money on anything other than investing into my future and education specially when I’m at 28 years of age juggling school and work, with no professional career and degree.
I got B’s here and there but I’ll do my best to not slip.
Some were easy classes that I’ve gotten B’s in. I just got lazy. Microeconomics, I slipped in a crucial exam so that I can’t do anything about.
Precalculus… I should work less for that >:|
I know Haas is really really really hard to get into but I talk to Berkeley representative at my school and she says although 5.6% who applied get in, more than 40% of them didn’t even qualify to apply.(They were missing some of the pre req and didn’t know about it etc)
She also advised that I would have a better chance applying as Econ major which I don’t mind but if I’m doing Econ when UCLA doesn’t offer Business administration, I can apply for Biz Econ for UCLA although you need 3.9 GPA to get in.
I don’t know.
Do I have any chance?
I don’t struggle with math I love math although I’ve not taken math for the past 10 years and those intermediate algebra and geometry classes were my first since high school.
Our son got a 3 on AP US Govt in high school, then went to a 4-year private university and got a C in the US Govt class. Now he is at a CCC where he has a 3.8+. From reading some of the more arcane stuff on the UC website (a Powerpoint for counselors), I think the UC policy is to do whatever will maximize an applicant’s GPA. Thus, the UC should give credit for the AP test, but not for the college class. If instead they give credit for the college class, that will have a drastically unfavorable effect on his GPA.
@JacobfromCA That’s what that means! Some schools offer science classes where the lab is optional, and thus make it a separate class that a student has to register for. If your course is listed as having lecture hours and lab hours, they were combined together.
The UC application doesn’t calculate GPA, but TAP does. It sounds more like the real question was how Berkeley would credit that history class.
@SoCalDad2 I believe that taking the class essentially negates the AP test, but I am not entirely sure. They will see the upward trend, anyway, so I don’t think one C will have such a major affect. You may want to email them to clarify.
At my neighboring CC, their policy is that if you take a course you initially took the AP for, they’ll keep the AP Units, but also keep the grade. So for a 4 unit English 101 course, they’ll give you 5.3 units towards IGETC (if you passed the AP exam), but keep the grade.
But for the UCs, on the other hand, they’ll 100% ask for and see the grade. Whether they decide to calculate it into the GPA is almost irrelevant, because either way, they’ll still see it.
Btw, just out of curiosity, where did you son go to 4-year? At my CC if you got a 3 on an AP US Govt test, you’re basically guaranteed over a 100% in the class lmao. I’d know, because I got a 4 and slept in the back. Is 4-year really that much harder? Ouch.
Vanderbilt
Oh God damn. No wonder, then. I hear it’s brutal.
Probably would be a misnomer to say Congratulations at this point, though. Lol
@solostish The UC’s don’t grant duplicate credit.
@aepaige Thank you so much!
I tested low on my CC’s entrance exam (math) and I’m taking algebra right now, but by next fall, I’ll be taking statistics but it won’t be completed. Will this have any influence on acceptance? @goldencub
If you apply fall16 for fall17 then you’ll have to update your application with your fall16 grades, assuming you did well it shouldn’t have a negative impact
