What I meant to say was that at my neighboring CC, if you take a course you already took as AP, they’ll disregard the units assigned for the course (let’s say English, they won’t give you the 4 semester units), but they’ll keep the grade and the AP units.
So you’ll get an A in English (but you won’t be awarded any units), but you’ll still have 5.3 from the AP exam.
The UCs, as you mentioned, will just take the college course, because they won’t duplicate the credits.
Based from what I’ve seen on campus, Berkeley likely will award the AP credits and will reduce the credits earned for the Vandy class to compensate. They traditionally don’t award any student double the credit for any equivalent course.
So in your situation I see them awarding 2.7 of “units earned” for the AP credit and then an additional 1.3 for the Vandy class. The 2.0 GPA “C” will only be multiplied by the 1.3 “units earned” instead of 4 so the GPA won’t take a huge hit.
I have a question regarding the 61B equivalent at UCB on the maps website. UCB requires students at Ohlone College to complete two courses (CS 116 & CS 124) in order to satisfy the 61B course. However, on maps under the 61B section, there isn’t the usual check option saying “I have met this requirement with more than one course”. I’m going to assume that the best option is to place CS 124 (Data Structures) under the 61B section and CS 116 under the Computer Science section further down the list.
How did you guys deal with the MAPS portion of the application regarding the lack of characters you were allowed to type? For example a lot of my classes say something like “Intro to the science of B” because of the lack of characters? Is it okay to edit the titles to make the courses clear?
@pleaseberkeley eh yeah I hated that. I just typed in until space ran out- but in your case you can probs just take out the, any non key words it should be fine. If you get accepted they’ll be able to correspond it with the courses on your transcript
Hi Guys! I’m new to College Confidential but I was hoping you could help me out…
At the beginning of the UC Transfer App, where it asks the college(s) you’ve attended, it asks for the degree you received from that college. Since I did not earn a regular Associates degree, do I say no degree? Or do all transfer students receive either an AA-T or AS-T? Is there a way to know if our degree is approved for these?

How do you go about entering in planned courses for the summer? I am planning to take french 3 in the summer to continue to knock out the requirement but I’m not sure at what institution/online program I would take it under yet. Should I just write in the additional comments section that I plan to take that course in the summer but am not sure from where yet?
@KingDavid12 Leave it blank if it doesn’t give you an option applicable to you. AA-S/T you need to meet the requirements for, you don’t get it just for transferring.
Hi everyone, does anyone know how a pass/no pass grading system affects you? I heard grad schools count that as a C… does anyone have a source of whether or not that is true??
They don’t really affect you for getting into UCs, except you can’t have them for major reqs. I’ve heard grad school aren’t fond of them too, but the biggest thing is probably having them in moderation.
@pugzandhugz Don’t make a habit of it. One or two P’s won’t kill your chances for grad school (they’ll view them neutrally), but any more than that will likely raise a red flag.
@goldencub@briank82 thanks guys, i usually do pass/no pass on courses that have nothing to do with my major. I usually take on 18-19 units every semester so sometimes when it gets a bit too much I do pass/no pass to relieve some stress!
Does CIS 61 offered at Laney (McDermott) really count for 61A credit?
I took the class (the Laney class) last fall, and it was a complete joke. It was basically an introduction to Python for people who have never programmed before. The professor just read from his slides and assigned mindless problems on moodle. I initially thought it would be structured off the Cal curriculum–not even close!
I’m shocked that Assist lists it as an articulated course. They don’t really count it, right?
