Will they accept people with average stats into impacted major?
So I know this can sometimes be a touchy subject, but do you think this year UCB will be a little weird with admissions as in more inclidned to select minorities because they are now the least diverse UC? Especially after the chancellor came out and talked about their plan to become more diverse?
@mad1419 I hope not. Being an Asian I think I have VERY low chances of getting accepted then since that place is mostly filled with Asians.
@mad1419: UCās like all California public schools cannot use Race/ethnicity in the admission decisions.
@Gumbymom I know they say that but donāt you think subconsciously the admission readers would prefer a candidate with excellent stats from a minority rather than one from a majority? I might be completely wrong but just a thought.
Thatās what I thought too @collegebound2023 I mean legally they obviously canāt say they take it into account but I feel like they would even if they say they donāt
Quick question. Does Berkeley admit by school first and then by major? So if I donāt get admitted for EECS, is it possible to be admitted as an undeclared major, like the way UCSD does it?
Iām pretty sure they can use race/ethnicity as long as thatās not the only factor, we learned about this in ap gov and my friendās dad actually was in a lawsuit with the uc system because of this
@collegebound2023 and @mad1419: No one can get into the minds of admission readers but I do know that no identifying information is available for the readers to see on the applications. I am sure information can be inferred from the essays, ECās etc⦠that is listed on the application.
@mad1419 Ur correct IMO.
They say race is āconsideredā, so definitely its a factor, though not as important as GPA and such (UCB CDS 2018), but a factor that helps make the tough decisions of choosing only 1 of the 2 candidates if a dispute arises.
@collegebound2023 Probably, but weāll never know for sure.
@Gumbymom I thought race is indicated in the first few sections of the app? Even genderā¦
@TheGuy1: Where is it stated that race is considered? Race/Ethnicity on the application is for demographic data collection not for admission decisions. Look on the CDS and Race/Ethnicity is listed as not considered.
1996, California voted to ban affirmative action for education but you are correct that no one knows for sure so I would like to think it is true unless proven otherwise.
Race isnāt considered at all. Have a look at the Berkeley Common Data Set under freshman admissions - https://opa.berkeley.edu/sites/default/files/uc_berkeley_cds_2017-18.xlsx
Race/ethnicity canāt legally be considered for California publics. So obviously, it wonāt be explicitly stated anywhere that it is.
Itās possible that admissions still considers it (under the radar / subconsciously), but itād be far less than other colleges.
@lisalisae given that heās a Physics declare, I would find it hard to believe that he wouldnāt be accepted tomorrow given those stats.
In the University of California v. Bakke case I think affirmative action was deemed okay in some cases so I donāt think considering race is illegal (while it is frustrating)
UC Forum Championās Note:
CC cannot be used as a debating forum and I will not allow this thread to get derailed into a race issue. Californians voted to ban affirmative action in public education and will leave it at that.
**UC Forum Champion Note:[\b] I have removed some posts due to TOS violations. Please move on with your UCB discussions and please leave any debate about race in college admissions out of it.
@ProfessorPlum168
His intended major at USC was Music Composition, so Iām pretty sure thatās why he didnāt get in there. He wants to do both music and physics and we tried to convince him to put Physics first at each school and then add Music once he was there, but he heard that he should put music first for USC. He also put music first at Northwestern and was rejected there as well.
Intended major at UCLA was Physics, so we were pretty surprised at that rejection. But itās possible he missed something on the UC app or didnāt showcase his ECās enough? He didnāt want any help from me on the application - and since heās our first to go to college and I didnāt find CC until recently, I probably wouldnāt have been much help anyway. He is a white male, but we were hoping Geography would work in his favor (we live in Arkansas). One more day and we will know if he has been ārejected by all of Californiaā (in his words). Ha!
Hey so I am an early admit and RC Scholar Nominee (hoping I get into the program tomorrow). When I visited the school through Experience Berkeley, many of the current students spoke about them having to deal with various mental issues (depression, anxiety, overall stress) and it has left me questioning whether or not I will have to go through that strife during my time at the school. Is this common amongst people who were at the top of their classes and achieved great success at their high school and dealing with being a little fish in a large pond? Are people of certain economic backgrounds more affected? Less? For perspective I am Chicano male from a very low-income family (EFC: 0) and in no way am I going into UCB expecting a 4.0 GPA and in no way am I a genius.
Hey, I have a question about scores. I know theyāre not the deciding factor, but was wondering if I sent in all of my scores, with and without writing, if the admissions officer consider all (my best score) of them? My best score was on a test without writing but obviously the UC schools required test scores with writing. Any reply would be appreciated. Thanks!
