UC Berkeley 2023 Applicants Thread

When do waitlist decisions come out?

@musiciangoaler there are 7 breadth (GE) classes in L&S you need to take covering a wide variety of topics. One of the categories will be Physical Sciences. Another is Biological Sciences. Math is more major dependent, though there are some pretty basic requirements which I’m sure you already have.

@wheredoiwanttogo you will be fine. The most important skill is to learn how to effectively read primary sources vs a secondary source. the readings at CAL are dense however they are manageable. take a look at this website for starters. congrats and welcome to the Bear Family https://www.insidehighered.com/blogs/gradhacker/how-read-book-two-hours-or-less

@ProfessorPlum168 Thank you for the info. You’ve been so helpful! I’m just scared by Physics as I did not do well in the AP Physics class at my high school last year.

Thanks for the info! @plgills

My daughter is accepted to Engineering.

@musiciangoaler - The “Physical Science” requirement offers many types of subjects that fulfill that requirement.

You get to choose 1 of these courses: Astrology, Biology, Chemistry, Engineering, Geography, Geology, Oceanography, Physical Science or Physics.

So sad I’m going to be missing Cal day, I’ve already toured the school once, but should I go back for another tour as an official bear?

Son admitted for Mechanical Engineering. In state. Wow! Gpa 4.35. SAT 1410

@nontraditional DS is “darling son” and DD is “darling daughter”. very old school. I think it started back on babycenter a decade or more ago. you can tell who the oldies are (me included

Has anybody gotten an email about cal day or just any email after they were admitted?

I received an email after being admitted, but there’s a link to information about Cal day on the portal

@rshrawg you had a big day today! Any idea where you might go?

I didn’t receive any email @rshrawg and where is that about cal day?

Son got in today to UCB - the months of lottery comes to an end - phew - to all kids be happy and content - God Bless

What kind of tours are recommended for Cal day? I am not sure all of them fits?

for Cal Day, there will literally be hundreds of lectures, show-and-tells, and tours available from every different major, along with information booths for organizations, majors, frats, sororities, etc. And it wouldn’t surprise me to see a protest or two by some activist group in front of Sproul as well. There should be a catalog of tours available to you a few days prior. I would highly suggest coming early (say before 8:30am and well before that) since there isn’t a great deal of public parking available. I do believe though that the parking lots are all free that day, the public ones near the campus that is. Not sure about street parking though.

To me, one of the important tours to make sure to take is to tour a couple of the dorms. This will literally be the only time you can get to go into an actual dorm and see live students in it. Normal dorm tours always just has a staged demo dorm. You will want to do your research on what dorms appeal to you, and plan out tours properly on the northeast side of campus (Foothill, Stern (for females only)), or on the south side (Units, Blackwell) and Clark-Kerr (way southeast) since they are very far apart from each other. Do be forewarned that to go to Foothill is a rather steep climb, especially if you’re not used to slopes. The whole campus is basically sloped upwards from west to east.

I would also recommend eating lunch at one of the dorm cafeterias as well (will cost $11 a person) to get a feel for what dorm food will be like. There’s dorm cafeterias in Foothill, Unit 1 and Unit 3. Library tours might be a good idea, as there are tons of libraries at Berkeley.

For EECS/CS majors, visiting Wheeler Hall, room 150 is a must. That’s where you’ll be spending a lot of your first 2 years with your lower division EE and CS classes. The first question you should ask is “how do they fit 1800 people in this hall?” CS and EE majors will spend a lot of their 4 years in the Soda, Etcheverry and Cory buildings as well.

Accepted for Energy Engineering!

I have no idea how this happened. I got denied from every other UC except for Davis and was losing hope. I really dont know how I got in with my low sat score. I thought out of every school I applied to I would be guaranteed to not get into Berkeley with my stats, but the opposite ended up happening. For future applicants, this proves anything can happen. Go bears!

in many respects, yes. But it depends on your goals and interests and study habits. There are no easy majors, but certainly there may be easier classes than others. You can go to berkeleytime.com to get historical grade statistics for most classes. I would say that in general if you’ve taken 3 or 4 non-STEM AP classes at the same time and gotten As in them, that’s about the same amount of rigor that’s needed to get B to A- in non-STEM classes at Berkeley. It’s going to be more work, but there are curves as well.

For STEM classes, there are many notorious weeder classes. For a lot of the STEM majors, between lectures, discussions, labs and studying, it can easily be a 80+hour work week. But if you think about it, it’s not really that much different than HS, where for students of Berkeley caliber, you have 6 hours of class time 5 days a week, and then theoretically another 30-40 hours of studying and homework each week. The only real difference is that instead of Science Olympiads and marching band and DECA, you might be holed up in a library instead on weekends. But it’s not really that bad if you’re well organized.

Congratulations new bears!
