UC Berkeley 2023 Applicants Thread

@Ravita I think that as long as she is under a certain number of CC credits, she should be ok. My guess is 60 semester credits? @Ohm888 or @Gumbymom probably would be a better source to answer this. This number doesn’t include AP credits. For example, my kid had 41 CCC credits and 40 AP credits, and was a freshmen entrant.

Thanks @ProfessorPlum168!!!

@Ravita: She should be fine but I always recommend to check with the University first before taking summer courses prior to matriculation. The UC’s cap the lower division units at 70 semester units and anything beyond this is amount is given subject credit.

Hi! I asked this question elsewhere too but it looks like more people are active here. I’m a homeschooled student who had to forego taking 4 AP exams because my local schools didn’t have space for me. I wasn’t taking AP courses for any of these; I self-studied for all of them. I’ve already committed to Berkeley and declined my other offers, and I’m going to send them an update using the form. Will this jeopardize my admission? Thanks

Who grades the classes you are taking?

@coolweather I go to an online school that grades my classes and provides me with a diploma.

Then it should be OK. There is no requirement that you have to provide AP scores. Regardless should keep proof that you tried to take AP exams but you could not.

@coolweather I don’t have any documentation to that effect, but I did buy all the AP books and study the material… I also made several calls asking College Board and local schools for a space for the test.

@musiclover5 not at all. its all good cuz u have a valid reason, and that a consistent academic performance per se by hard definition can still be shown, and that a HS diploma can still be attained.

@musiclover5 I’d suggest notifying the adcom about this, since that might be better than them getting something “below expectations”, though either way IMO it doesnt bar u from entry.

Thanks for your help everyone
On another note, how long does it take for you to be able to use your CalNet ID?

@musiclover5 getting your Berkeley email ID and Calnet ID should have been literally the first things to do and it should be active fairly immediately. Are you having problems with getting into the portal (CalCentral.berkeley.edu)? It’s important to check there at least once a day for announcements and reminders.

@ProfessorPlum168 thanks! I managed to get it to work – I just had to wait a little bit.

Hi all! Needing advice/comments/thoughts on choosing UC Berkeley over UCLA for pre-med. My child got admitted to UCLA Neuroscience and UC Berkeley College of Letters and Science. We are most concerned about the quality of the program. Thanks in advance!

@D4Mom Both seem pretty neck to neck and prestigious IMO.

What do other credible sources say for ranking and/or specialities of the program in ranking descriptions?

US News is a good place to start i think.

I’d suggest making a forum on here for this too.

@d4mom given the very low acceptance rates for med school, a big consideration might be to figure out backup plans and then decide which school has the better backup plan. It would seem reasonable to assume that both places will be similar for pre-med. But you would probably need to provide more details such as planned major, interests, likes and dislikes, etc.

@TheGuy1 - thanks for the advice and comments! Per US News ranking (though looks like rankings pertain to graduate studies as UCSF is included ), UCLA is ranked 11th while UCB is 20th.

@ProfessorPlum168 - so true about the backup plans. If med school does not materialize or child loses interest, a research career is very much possible. She is very interested to major in neuroscience because of past research internship. Not picky about the scene or weather. Just likes to study and mentor younger students. Support from family/friends and financial cost - similar for both. Thank you so much!

I don’t think Berkeley has Neuroscience at the undergrad level, but they do have Neurobiology and Cognitive Science.

@D4Mom UCLA seems like a good option as per quality and rigor, and in light of @ProfessorPlum168 's statements.

Be sure to look into course specifics and the college environment (in general and the surrounding area) to confirm the option. It should all be something the student likes.
