***UC Berkeley Class of 2019 Applicant Discussion***

@StevenToCollege‌ Nope, I have to see my final financial aid offers before I can decide.

@TanTheeta Sorry to trouble you, but how did you go about doing that? I made that bConnected ID and clicked on a link that was supposed to take me to make my email, but I got an error message instead.

@Storian‌ For me, I just went onto myBerkeleyApp and saw a checklist there that said create your CalNet ID (which is also your email). And I clicked on the link “Create” and it guided me through the process!

I got in with a 1740 SAT

@Storian‌

The processing time also depends on your admission status. Fall Program Freshmen for example, need to wait 2 days. Also, if you SIR’D over the weekend, you’ll probably be able to make your email within the next few days, since the Admissions Office was closed over the weekend

Trying to decide between ucla, USC, and berkeley…any advice? (I’m OOS if that matters)

Is Berkeley worth the out of state tuition? I’ll be on the pre-med track. If I go to Stony Brook my parents will be able to help me pay for medical school too because we will save a lot of money (I’ll be paying instate tuition). If I go to cal I won’t have to take out any loans, but it will be a lot for my family to try and pay for everything. I’ll have a harder time paying for medical school later. However, UC Berkeley is a great school with great opportunities. I also know that the majority of undergrads don’t get into ANY medical school, and my reasoning was that Berkeley would give me a better chance for getting into a good medical school than Stony Brook would. Some say that’s not necessarily true and I just don’t know where I should go. Any thoughts?

Me too! It’s a hard choice but I went with Berks, even though I was admitted for Spring. Guess I’ll do FPF

@tuffguy123 What was your hook? Athlete? Just curious as junior was wait listed with nearly 2300 SAT. He’s accepted to a good program elsewhere so all’s good. But I guess the holistic evaluation sometimes works to your favor - and sometimes - not so much.

@patertrium

Sorry to hear that your kid got waitlisted at Berkeley with nearly 2300 SAT.
Did he apply to EECS?

I know someone also got waitlisted with 2350 SAT.
Man, it’s really brutal this year.

i have a question regarding financial aid. how does Cal decide on need base ? is it based on EFC ? and how to calculate it ? thanks.

@StevenToCollege‌ Thanks. He was only applying to L&S too - not EECS. 12 or 13 APs (depending on what he self studies this time around) mostly 5s all at least 4s, lots of EC, athletics etc etc. Fortunately he’s the stoic engineering type. I think I took it worse than he did. I would have liked to have seen the UCB cherry for the significant sustained effort.

@calgirl2015‌ Yes - I believe it’s mostly EFC based. That is based on your family income, non-retirement savings, savings in your name, how many siblings you have that are in college or not - plus 50 other things. Didn’t you fill out the FAFSA? There’s a calculator here: https://www.aidcalc.com/calculators/efc/

@patertrium

Wow, that’s insane.
So where is he heading in the Fall?

@StevenToCollege‌ Either Irvine Davis or SD. He just spent a day up visiting Davis. He toured it last year but this was a refresher. This weekend we’re down to UCSD for their Triton Day. Should be a great chance to meet the Profs and students and get the lay of the land.

Anyone know how hard it is to transfer from chemical biology to chemical engineering after 1 year at berkeley

@patertrium thanks for the info.

Hi everyone!
I come from a regular international school (in Eastern Europe) that doesn’t offer AP courses or an IB program. Therefore, I have 0 credits from advanced classes.
I wanted to know if I will be at a big disadvantage compared to my peers that will probably have lots of AP credits and will use them to skip entry-level classes and prereqs?
Will I even be able to graduate in 4 years? My major(planned) is CS in L&S. Will I be able to keep up with other CS students?

I hope somebody can give some insights or recommend something regarding my question. Thanks in advance!

Hi!

On the Berkeley website it says they do not let you skip more than 2 of the 6 humanities classes with AP Credit, but I am confused as to whether or not the credits for every additional class actually counts?

Do I only get credit for two of the classes? Or do I get credit for all of them but only two of them let me to “skip” the basic humanities courses?

Thanks

Does anyone know about UROP? (Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program?) Approximately how many people get it and what exactly is it?
