So, @10s4life
You did not get email, right??
@hansomeboy, It seems that way.
Okay. Thank you guys for replying to me.
For like an hour, I thought I was already rejected, and was going to give up and think about those back up schools I already got accepted to. LOL
Like UMICH, PURDUE, UIUC, Carnegie Mellon, and still waiting on Vanderbilt
Honestly, I just liked school itself for Vanderbilt even though not good engineering school.
UMICH is great for me because I am in state.
I only got the GlobalEdge mail (seems like mass email). I applied to the college of Letters and Science. I DID NOT get the undergraduate research emai as @skywalker11 said
Wait. I made a mistake
@10s4life
I am also waiting on Carnegie Mellon. I did not mean to tell you wrong info.
May I ask, how about you
@hansomeboy If you are in at UM COE already and in-state, why are you even thinking about UCB?
Yeah @hansomeboy UM COE is really good. Especially if you get in-state tuition.
@gluttonforstress
Well. Are you also from Michigan??
While tuition is not issue to me, Berkeley’s Engineering reputation is like top3 in the nation.
Also, as I grow up I am planning on doing a lot of international business and work involvement. I also have much interest on getting jobs in Europe. If you check global rankings of Engineering schools, gap between Michigan and Berkeley is really huge. With Berkeley’s good relations with good european engineering schools, I know a lot of people who attend Berkeley can go to european grad school too. Also, they have many study abroad program in Europe.
As a foreigner, I know MIT, Stanford, Berkeley, and Caltech are really the only American Engineering schools that pops into a lot of people’s head when thinking of world’s best engineering schools. Out of four, Berkeley is my favorite school. However, I do not have much hope because Berkeley’s engineering acceptance rate is like 8.9 % last year.
I think it is based on opinion. Yeah, I agree it is really great since I can get in state tuition at Michigan.
However, to the path I am going, Berkeley looks better
@hansomeboy I’m a UM grad and now live in CA. My son applied to UCB this year and has many friends there. I think you are greatly overestimating the difference between UM and UCB. There may be a little boost to UCB with the Asian markets but overall, you can work anywhere and do anything with a UM degree. I would take Ann Arbor over Berkeley in a minute too for quality of life. Not saying that UCB isn’t a great school. Additional thought is that UM has a $10 billion endowment (and growing) and UCB has a constant annual shortfall, every year battle with the state legislature on funding, and some serious challenges in the upcoming years. I don’t think anyone at UM would know what you were talking about if you asked about impacted majors. They are a fact of life at UCB. Just one dad’s opinion.
GO Blue:)
@gluttonforstress
Thank you for sharing your opinion…I did not know that I was talking to a dad.
Actually my dad has several friends that attended Berkeley and UMICH while my dad attended neither. My dad attended Stanford.
What I have been hearing from my dad a lot is that friends that attended MIT, Stanford, Berkeley or Caltech tend to be able to stretch themselves to other countries easily, and be able to attend grad schools in europe and asia. I also lok forward to get Ph.D degree. They tend to do a lot of international businesses. My dad is in his mid 40’s right now, and a lot of friends that attended one of those four tend to be in really high position or are already president of a company, my dad is also a president of an international company as well.
I mean I expect there would be also UM grad that reach things I listed above. I just have a different opinion.
But, still thanks for sharing your opinion.
I know going to UMICH will still give me great opportunities for my future career. I have big goals in my life, like my dad’s accomplishment. Being able to be research Engineer while being a leader of company.
For me, one of those big four engineering school I listed looks like will give me an easier route.
However, I would still be really happy to attend UMICH enginering next year.While it is a really good school, home is close, A lot of friends are going there next year, and even my girl friend. I heard a lot of couples tend to break up when they attend different college, and I do not want to break up with my girl friend. LOL
@hansomeboy You are gonna be fine wherever you wind up. Some of your Berkeley posts make it sound like your whole future rides on a UCB acceptance. Just wanted to make sure you understand that UM COE will open 99.9% of the doors you face in life. It’s not like you have Wayne State or OCC as your back ups (not that there is anything wrong with those schools).
Honestly I feel like the emails don’t mean much. I never got that Happy New Year’s email others said they got.
Would appreciate thoughts on this:
The other day my principal called my self and the two others who received National Merit Finalist simply to congratulate us, but he also said that if any of us wanted him to call any college and vouch for us on our behalf, he’d be glad to do so and to let him know.
That’s an offer I’m really thinking about taking, especially for Berkeley since it’s my top choice. But I don’t want to seem pesky or irksome. Is that a warped perception? Furthermore, it’s not as if my principal and I are best buddies and he knows all the intricacies of my life. I don’t even know what he would say to admissions.
Basically, good idea or no to have him call and vouch for me?
Honestly? I can’t imagine it will make much difference either way. Berkeley had 100,000 applicants this year. I think there is a good reason why they don’t ask everyone for recommendations…so much to read!!
A phone call from your principal isn’t likely to hurt you, but in the chaos and insanity of admissions right now, it’s not likely to be effective either.
@mjstewart1224 Thanks for the input! Yeah that’s kind of what I figured. Coupled by the fact that though it’s a nice offer, he really doesn’t know me on a personal level so I doubt think he’d have much of an impact ultimately.
If they only accept two letters of rec what good would a phone call do? also, how do they know the person calling is your principal? I could call on behalf of my S and say I am his principal. I have wondered the opposite, what if a principal called on a student they didn’t like and wanted to hurt their chances? Would a college believe them?
@Mysonsdad Those are certainly things to consider but given the context of the offer and our previous relationship, it would be good things he’d say. That being said, I doubt anything new or enlightening would be added that my LOR’s haven’t already covered. So you’re definitely right about that.
