@NICE8x it says so pretty clearly on the portal under your major I believe, but it’s in the first box.
@nadinev That is absolutely insane…
@epicpear (love that by the way!) It is but I’m suspecting there is something hardwired in the UC acceptance methods that would reject her. ME is particularly hard to get into. Especially for young women. UCLA only has 15% women in their ME program. 2014-15 accepted 371 men and only 63 women. Which is kind of outrageous for a public institution. But as I wrote to @calimom2016 my kid will be fine. I’m just more curious as to why? She’s very qualified and demonstrably more qualified than some of the people posting their stats that were accepted. So what gives? Cheers!
@nadinev What did she write her essays about? I got into all the schools you mentioned with a 31 ACT and a 4.33/4.8 GPA (Capped/uncapped) for Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering. I wrote my first essay about working with my dad at his small business and getting my hands dirty while I wrote my 2nd essay (at 720 words) about my passion for jazz.
@epicpear If I recall in the swirl of essays for all these colleges, I think her UC ones was about how in her house you were never allowed to use the words “I’m bored” because that was just a lack of imagination and how that shaped her path to wanting to design and build stuff. And how she found a community of women in science by building the Science Olympiad team at her school and how they went on to do research at Caltech. (by the way as I write all of this I’m so amazed at all you extraordinary young people (my kid included
) who are shaping the world. Really give us old folks hope. Huge congrats on your acceptances. I know how hard you had to work for that. That’s awesome.
Lmao literally had a dream I was accepted into Berkeley and woke up simultaneously excited and disappointed. Had to make sure I didn’t actually tell people I got in otherwise it would be real awkward having to explain myself if I don’t.
I wrote my first essay about how love and passion have shaped me because I’m literally the most excited passionate person about everything especially my education and studies and extracurricular activities but now I’m feeling like that was so stupid, especially since I got waitlisted at UCLA
@nadinev what is her unweighted gpa? if her weighted gpa is just a 4.1, I would think that could mean that she is not getting enough As since you said she took 10 APs
Hi, sorry I haven’t been able to catch up on all these comments, but if I was accepted into UCSD, UCI, UCD, and UCLA, do I stand a pretty solid shot at Berkeley? I know it’s the best UC but idk’d how truly competitive it was
@Kasami omg me too xD
not fun. Esp when i have a really low chance anyways
@10s4life I’ve gotten into UCLA, UCSD, UCD (UHP Invite), UC Irvine for Computer Science. I’m just hoping I get into UC Berkeley though. I haven’t been rejected from a UC and I have above average stats and ECs for the others. It would be about part for Cal, so it can go either way.
When exactly will the result be released?
@nadinev - I feel for you and have been very surprised with how arbitrary UC decisions seem to have been. If it makes you feel any better, things are even more arbitrary if you apply from out of state. For example, OOS candidates from small high schools that don’t have as many AP classes are penalized because, as I understand it, OOS honors classes don’t get any credit towards the UC weighted average.
As a result of this, I will be discouraging my younger kids from applying to UCs. I understand the political pressures of favoring in state candidates but when things are made too arbitrary/skewed, OOS candidates will simply not spend the money/time to apply. This in turn will lower the appeal of the UCs since they will not have a geographically diverse student body and the rankings of the schools will drop. High caliber OOS kids that want to go to school in California will apply to Stanford, Cal Tech and USC.
@10s4life Thanks for your sweet reply. She’s fine and excited about Mich ME. It is an amazing program and she’ll do fantastic there. .
My DD corrected me about her GPA (also annoyed that her mom is having this discussion)But I am really fascinated by the way UCs pick and choose their candidates. Her Weighted GPA is 4.31 Not 4.1 So it is I think in the range. Perhaps on the lower side of the range but with her other stats I would think she is solidly in the big fat middle where ONE UC would accept her. Another poster suggested her statements were did not resonate. Definitely a possibility. C But perhaps there is something hardwired in the system and somewhat frustrating to be accepted into schools that are very difficult to get into but not here in her home state. It doesn’t seem like it is based necessarily on meritocracy
Congrats on your acceptance. As I said to another poster all you young people give us all hope as you take us into the future. Truly. You all amaze with your intelligence and talents. Best of luck to you.
Hey guys, I read in some of the previous posts that admissions for UCLA is more academic oriented and UCB is more general -achievements oriented? How true is this and is there a source that can confirm this? I got into UCLA, and now I’m wondering about my chances at UCB. My academics(gpa, sat stuff) were the strongest portions of my application, and so now I’m worried I might not have as good a chance at Berkeley. Thanks.
@Janice1019 Academic achievement is a subset of general achievement … it doesnt mean that you are a weaker applicant. It just means that between studen A) strong academic, so so EC
student B) so so academic, strong EC
UCLA will pick first one, and UCB can go either way. So I guess 50 50 chance which is much better than the 20% acceptance rate.
I got rejected from UCLA and wait listed at UC Irvine. I have lost all hope
@ProudDad1357 Thanks for the message. Yup! It’s a messed up system. My dd also applied to Mcgill ME and U of T ME. I like their systems. Purely numbers based. You make the cut off or don’t. And U of T engineering has adopted a new system where applicants do 3 short interviews online. Can’t edit or redo. Once you start you have to finish. One of the questions is a problem solving question so they can see how you think on your feet. Although difficult and uncomfortable for the applicants I love this approach. These poor kids get so caught up in quagmire of stats and tests. A chance to be seen and be heard is awesome. Would love to see other schools adopt this too. Cheers!
If you got rejected from UCLA, do not lose hope. UCLA and UCB are notorious for looking for completely separate qualities in applicants. You will get a very small amount of applicants who get accepted to both UCLA and UCB (most of these applicants are Ivy League kids now). If you got into UCLA, be extremely happy. UCLA is an AMAZING school and honestly it is definitely catching up to UCB, if not already at Berkeley level. In fact, less people at my school last year got accepted into UCLA but over 30 got into UCB. That’s not a strong statistical example since it is such a small sample, but you get the point! UCLA students are also much happier than UCB; the stress at UCLA is a different type of what you could call “SoCal Stress” (and being honest the campus is SO much better, I mean UCLA is located in Westwood COME ON NOW BEVERLY HILLS YOU CANNOT GO WRONG WITH THAT…while Berkeley is located right next to People’s Park…wonderful -_-). UCB on the other hand is (obviously) an amazing school. It has so much history and prestige, you could not go wrong with going there. In fact, ALL college campuses have something spectacular about them. So to conclude, you will go somewhere great regardless of this UCB admission result. HAVE FAITH!
When is the resutl coming out?
