UC Berkeley class of 2020 undergraduate Engineering applicants.

@anotherdude Colleges will put your state’s policy in consideration. You’ll not be in disadvantage. Most importantly, your stats are way above Berkeley’s average. You have a high chance of getting in.

@hansomeboy yes CA born and raised. I’ve lived in both NorCal and SoCal. Michigan seems chilly. Never been there.

@anotherdude your stats blew all of ours out of the water. Impressive stuff. Those opportunities aren’t really offered at CA public high schools. What country are you from since you mentioned you’re international?

@10s4life I feel you. Being in a public school myself, I understand how hard it is to get really good opportunities. I’m from India btw

Awards: National Merit Semifinalist and some awards at my school

Extracurriculars:
Science Club (president)
Science Bowl (Team Captain)

Job/Work Experience: Babysitting

Volunteer/Community service: Through school clubs (CSF, Interact) and also volunteer with women’s refuge–one of the founders of a student-led group that supports its program for young children

LOR: yes
Financial Aid: yes

I’m in the same boat when it comes to research/internship opportunities; I attend a rural CA public high school. Oh well, I don’t think that they would hold that against us with the whole holistic review thing–at least I really hope so! :slight_smile:

@GingerTea12 .
You also look like you have really good stats. It always looks like engineering has so many strong applicants. Of all people who have listed their stats, I am the only one that does not have 4.0 Unweighted GPA. That makes me feel like I would not get in.
Did you ever see any engineering applicant with 3.9 Unweighted GPA getting in?

If anyone can anwer, does berkeley look at GPA going upward tendency?
I am meaning if Berkeley values my GPA getting improved as grade goes up.
I had 3.91 GPA unweighted. I got 2 B’s first semester of Tenth grade, and 1 B’s second semester of Tenth grade. However, I did not get any B in 11th grade.

@hansomeboy There are plenty who don’t have a 4.0 UW and get in. Granted a good proportion have 4.0s I do know an upward trend is very favorable. Don’t worry your stats are very good dude and your test scores are strong. Cal is so selective for engineering everyone has the same odds.

@GingerTea12 @10s4life @PWANG96 @anotherdude
I just want to ask something.
Did all of you guys get leadership scholarship invitation like few weeks ago??
Also, on January fourth, did you guys all get Happy New Year message from Berkeley??

@hansomeboy Yeah I got the invite for leadership a few weeks ago as well as the Happy New Year message. Past data from CC forums points to both just being an automatic email sent to almost all the applicants.

@10s4life
Really?? At my school, I know several other people applied to Berkeley.
However, only like two people I know got those. So, I wasn’t thinking it was for everyone.

@10s4life
You told me that there are people with unweighted GPA of below 4.0 get in.
How about weighted GPA?
Because I was taking orchestra every year, I had two less AP.
My weighted GPA is 4.3. If I can exclude my orchestra class, my weighted GPA becomes like 4.37.
If I can replace orchestra with APs, I can have like 4.48.
I also had to take many regular classes over the summer because of school’s graduation requirement.
I know engineering’s average gpa is 4.5.
Are there any applicants that get in with 4.3ish GPA??
I also have another question. Does my AP score affect my admission?
I mean I got 5s on all of my exams except for Macroecon. However, I thought I would not need report my score report from college board until after I get in. Does AP score matter? I only wrote down my score as I was filling out UC app

The only weighted GPA UCB will see is based on the courses you put on your app from the summer before 10th to the end of 11th grade. Those courses should have been A-G eligible. Then only A-G subjects from that time period would make up the weighted GPA. If I understand the question correctly replacing orchestra with APs now won’t do anything to your GPA nor can u change it because the app is sent and senior year grades aren’t factored into decisions. The weighted UC GPA only allows for 8 semesters of AP or honors grade boosts. In your case only AP because honors don’t count for out of state. UCB also uses the uncapped weighted meaning more than 8 semesters of grade boosts are used but only for AP classes taken in the time period above. The average GPA is just that an average. People will get in with GPAs both higher and lower. AP scores do not affect admission like SAT and ACT and SAT subject tests do. They are “points added” but their main purpose is to enable you to have college credit and to validate that the grade you earned in class is a good representation of your knowledge of that subject. AP scores are only self reported on the app. If you would like college credit then send in the official score report before July once you have been admitted. Admissions decisions are a month and a half away. At this point we really can’t do anything. Hope this answers your question. :slight_smile:

@hansomeboy Yes, I got both the emails. I think that everybody gets them

@10s4life. Thank you so much for replying to my message.
I knew about uncapped GPA and capped GPA. However, I did not know that out of state applicants cannot use honors class. When I was filling out my UC App, I wrote one of my class as UC Approved honors class.
I just hope they just change my class identification as they viewed my application. Hope it does not give any problem.
Also, thanks again for answering to my questions.

@hansomeboy Oh no prob happy to help ease the nerves. Heck I’m nervous too lol. Don’t worry about putting it as a honors class. The admissions counselors will correct it for you and recalculate the GPA. Does anyone know if UCB will send out supplements since they already did LOR for some of the applicants?

@10s4life what are these supplements that Berkeley sends out?

@anotherdude In prior years they sent supplemental questions to borderline applicants.

In place of the supplements, LOR’s were requested this year.

@10s4life
yes.
I feel like it would have been better if you took physics and chem, especially physics because you stated that you applied to Mechanical Engineering. I also applied to Mechanical Engineering.
But, you already have so many other things which look extremely impressive.
Compare to me, I feel like you don’t really need to worry that much. You have really great stats.
