Received an email on Drake Scholarship. It specifically said that the email is not to be seen as a guarantee fir admission. Also to be eligible for it one has to be a US citizen or Perm Res both if which i sm not.
@sibibib
Hey. I think it is really good sign. i applied to Mechanical Engineering, and that Drake stuff is for Mechanical Engineering. I am kind of losing hope right now bc. didn’t get one… Just makes me wonder if it’s for top students. Would you be willing to share your stats??
They said they usually get 40-70 applicants, and they were looking for 7-12 new scholars last year.
The percentage may seem high, but it’s extremely competitive to become one of the lucky ones.
@StevenToCollege So by 40-70 applicants, do you mean they only invite 40-70? Or that only 40-70 apply? Where did you get this info?
@StevenToCollege
It seems Drake stuffs only for ME which I applied to. So, does anyone who doesn’t get invitation get in??
@hansomeboy I think they’ve sent that email randomly without looking too much into the applicant specifics and so it should not be taken as any sign good or bad. I have a couple of reasons why I say this:
- The email was not specifically addressed to me but as Dear UC Berkeley Applicant - so probably a mass mail.
- It stated in the email that to be eligible for the Drake Scholarship one had to be a US citizen or a Permanent Resident by Aug 15. I am an international student (female). So clearly they did not look into the student's residence specifics and thereby their eligibility before sending out the email.
- The email clearly states (and I quote): "To be considered, applicants must first gain admission into Cal and it is important to note that this message should in no way be construed as a guarantee of admission."
On top of that my stats aren’t sterling either. They are good but that’s about it…not brilliant, not sterling!
I hope I have calmed some nerves here:)
That would be 40-70 who actually applied for the scholarship.
We asked the officer who sent out the invitation as my son went through the same process last year.
I don’t know the answer to your question.
But the following was extracted from the invitation that my son received last year.
To be considered, applicants must first gain admission to Cal and it
is important to note that this message should in no way be construed
as a guarantee of such admission. Recipients of the scholarship are
selected on the basis of interest in Mechanical Engineering,
academic attainments, and extracurricular achievement. To be
eligible, the applicant must be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident
by August 15, 2015.
I was admitted early to eecs, can’t wait!
Has anyone received an email about Fall Program for Freshman?
What email? Could you elaborate?
Hey everyone would I be at a disadvantage for having applied engineering: undeclared?
SAT: 2220
Math 2: 800
Physics: 750
GPA: British curriculum, I got five As at AS level (the highest you can get and the highest in my country)
*I applied to some other schools for Mechanical engineering, would it have been better to do the same for Berkeley?
Good luck everyone.
So I know that UCSD admits people that apply into engineering as undeclared status if they are strong candidates that are not deemed as quite strong enough for engineering and I know that UCLA does not. I was wondering which of these approaches UC Berkeley goes by.
Hi I was wondering if anyone could chance me: just got accepted into UCLA for electrical engineering as well as boston college, northeastern U honors, and UCI are the ones I have heard back from
I am applying from out of state.
From a competitive Jesuit HS- rank 6/180 (top 5%)
GPA: unweighted: 3.98 (A- count as 3.7’s), UC: 4.18 (low because i’m out of state so honors aren’t considered, school offers very limited APs)
ACT: 32 (one sitting), 33 superscored: S: 34, R: 30, E: 32, M:33 (these are from one sitting)
AP: BC Calc- 5 (ab subscore-5), APUSH- 4
Subject: Math 780, USH 620
Current Classes: AP Bio, Multivariable Calc (through creighton university), AP Gov, Contemp lit/english, and other required classes
Lots of EC’s- like eagle scout, offers to run at D3 colleges in track and XC (captain for both), etc…
thanks- I heard EECS from Berkeley is pretty competitive so I am wondering what are my chances
LOR were requested and given
Guys. For UCB, undeclared and EECS tend to be more difficult to get in compare to other engineering.
Also, @bow3208 , when you mention UC GPA, it would be better to state both uncapped and capped GPA. If you just say weighted GPA, then it is uncapped gpa. For Capped GPA, you can only have 8 semester of honors or AP that counts as 5.0 for an A.
Someone in other forum said that Rec letter is just a pilot study, and Rec letter won’t be used to decide my admission.
Is that really true?? I have had some difficult circumstances, and my counselor wrote it on rec letter. If it is not going to be read, then theres no way for admissioners to know.
@mywifeisUM
While people’s opinion differ, I would just think simply. If they aren’t even going to use rec letter, why would they even ask??
Most time, Rec doesn’t boost your admission very much with not much effect. I think that’s what admission officers could have said and predicted. For me, my counselor just talked about me overcoming English. However, I I think your rec letter should have big impact.
I saw your previous posts, and you have a totally opposite background compare to me and some others on this forum.
If admission officers take your situation into account, I think you should be really competitive because your application stat just looks little below other competitive applicants even without taking your circumstances into account.
Most of us only have little above 200 hours of volunteering, and you have 1000hours. I think there is a really meaningful connecion between your circumstance and volunteering. To be honest, you have a really good story for Pre-Med or like biomedical engineering. Don’t lose your hope, I believe you are a strong applicant. I think you should deserve more chance than people like me, who had everything wanted. Also, I know Berkeley is known for their diversity acceptance compare to other schools, so Berkeley may be looking for applicants like you.
It’s just my opinion, and you may want to see others’ opinion too. Best Wishes!!
@handsomeboy .ILY. JK.
Thank you for your message.I do hope they give some consideration about my circumstance. I will be thankful if others can also share about their idea of my circumstance.
Can anyone else also share idea about whether Rec letter will be used or not?
@10s4life thats awesome- which i could run at a school like ucla, but I know they have club sports which would be fun
@hansomeboy oh sorry, I honestly have no idea what my capped/uncapped gpa is or how to calculate it, the unweighted gpa is just from my high school, the uc gpa is just what the calculator spit out
