UCB sends to LOR’s to a small percentage of applicants that meet their criteria (key words or phrases) on the UC application. Historically, Low income, first generation and recently High stat applicants and local Bay Area HS students. The LOR’s are in place of the augmented or supplemental review they used in the past. The augmented criteria is listed below but mainly they want to find out more about the applicant so it is a positive but not a guarantee of admission even if you submit the LOR’s.
Evidence of focus on an area of special talent which may have limited a student’s
time to participate in a broader range of activities.
Evidence of character traits that imply a strong likelihood of making a significant
contribution to campus life.
Evidence of significant academic achievement or the potential for academic
achievement at the University in spite of extraordinary or compound
disadvantage or learning difference, or physical disability or other unusual
circumstances.
Evidence of significant improvement in the academic record accompanied by one
or both of the following: reasons for the initial poor performance; and/or sustained
and in-depth participation in educational outreach programs, which demonstrate
the applicant’s commitment to succeed academically within a challenging
environment.
Evidence of relative lack of access to, counseling about, or support to take
college preparatory, honors, Advanced Placement (AP) or International
Baccalaureate (IB) classes or required college entrance examinations

Berkeley updated their website to indicate that Cal Day will be on Saturday, April 13, 2024. Bruin Day will be the same day. The rivalry will begin early!
Hello, I have applied to Berkeley for CS. I have read that there are two CS majors, L&S CS and EECS at the college of engineering. However, I applied to the CS major in the college of computing, data science, and society. What CS major is this?
I have a question. I applied to GMP of HAAS, however I changed my mind and want to be reviewed as a regular UCB application in L&S.
Would I need to contact the admission office (or HASS?) to let them know this? Or I will be fine without contacting them and my application will be reviewed as undeclared L&S anyway? Please help - thank you.
Hi if we have listed first choice in the COE and second choice in the school of L&S. My son has now decided he wants to study biology instead of bme. do you think its worth it to submit a major change request to make first choice in the school of L&S or should we leave it as it is?
Yes, he should try to change his major since UCB only guarantees review of the primary major. The alternate major is only considered during the waitlist or appeal process.
Q: Can I change the major (and/or college/school) I applied for at Berkeley?
A: To change a major/college/school in your submitted Berkeley application, please submit your request using the Contact Us form. You can expect a decision via email within five to seven days. NOTE: No new major changes will be considered after January 25, 2024.
The UCB website does not specifically state and this is the first year Freshman can apply directly.
This is on the website:
After submitting the UC application in November, you must also complete and submit the Haas supplemental application. You’ll receive an email from the UC Berkeley Office of Undergraduate Admissions within 5–7 business days after submitting your UC application.
The supplement includes an essay question and a video interview upload.
If you do not submit a complete Haas supplemental application by January 5, 2024, your admission to Haas will be denied.
If you did not receive the video essay supplement then No.
the essay had a deadline (which i submitted the essay by) but the video didn’t, which is why i submitted it a bit late. The checklist shows a tick for the essay, what should i do?
Since the direct admit program is new, you can contact admissions and ask. I cannot offer you any advice other than what was listed on the UCB website.
All students who applied to Haas undergrad business degree should have received an email and the opportunity to submit both supplemental essay and video “interview” in their portal. Getting an email to submit these things does not indicate anything at all. As far as I understood this would have showed up in the kids portal if they listed Haas as their first choice. There is an hour-long youtube video put out by Haas that discussed everything. But i understood the deadline to submit these items was a hard deadline. ETA: getting the email to submit does not indicate the applicant is being reviewed favorably or not… should have been automatic.
