Do they admit students for alternate major? Their website shows, they consider alternate major only at the time of waitlisted?
Of course!
Here’s a screenshot FYI (I’m '25):
No clue… I was admitted early to my alternative major which I found interesting. I applied primary Linguistics, alt Math, and was admitted to Math.
Good to Know.
Does anyone know where to check the major I was admitted to? I am looking all over MAP and CalCentral but can’t find it! I see it in my Desicion reaction but can’t find it
If I were to be accepted to my Major Environment and Society, would I be able to switch into my alternate major Political Science before attending?
No, because Society and Environment is in CNR and Political Science is in L&S. I think you need to attend for at least one semester before switching between colleges.
Linguistics is not impacted so it will be very easy to switch, if you want to.
It’s actually strange that the OP was admitted to Math instead of Linguistics.
I’m good with math! I was planning to switch from ling to Math because ling was less impacted
Yes. I still don’t understand either
I hear ya. Finance guy here.
How difficult do you think this would be to do once attending a semester?
It has generally been a fairly easy process in the past. I assume you won’t have too much trouble.
Thanks! I was on the fence about the two when applying but feel more confident about poli sci now.
CNR is a great college and the Society and Environment major is pretty flexible in terms of what you actually study. So it might be worth giving it a try before you decide. You can also contact one of the CNR peer advisors if you want to get a student’s thoughts. They also can also tell you more about the transfer process. You do not have to be an enrolled student to speak with a peer advisor:
" Peer Advising Leaders (PALS): The Peer Advising Leadership (PAL) Program of the Rausser College of Natural Resources strives to offer personal viewpoints and experiences to current and prospective students. These students are trained in understanding college and University requirements, policies, and procedures, and are available to answer questions through our Virtual Front Desk and via email during the Fall and Spring term. For more information about Rausser College PALs and how to contact them, visit their page."
Wow! I really appreciate this! I will do some more research for sure!
My daughter is a first year student in the College of Environmental Design. At our Admitted Students event last spring, they said that at Berkeley they accept you as a student first and foremost, above all else. If you need to switch your major, you are able to do so.
I don’t know the timeline or limitations on that. I’m sure it’s related to how impacted different majors are. Most of your core classes the first year are general education requirements. So if it takes a semester to get into the right major, it probably will not impact your graduation date, especially if you’re coming in with some AP credits.
It was a much more open system than Cal Poly SLO, which was my daughter‘s other final choice. This is one of the reason she chose Cal over SLO, because it would be easier to transition if needed, and they were much more flexible.
nvm got my answer!
What time did UCB come out last year?
Last year my daughter got her acceptance on Thursday, March 28th–sometime in the early afternoon, PST.
