Another important question is whether the Lions share of the production offerings are writing oriented or not. You can’t – Shouldn’t – completely get away from it even if you wanted to, But it’s also something to be aware of (I.e., whether every production class is actually screenwriting).
Yes, he is accepted at UCSC as well, great to know he should keep that one in the discussion. So grateful for the detailed response–so much helpful information to work with! And best of luck to your daughter in her final year
Are there any group chat for Cal admitted students?
i was admitted for ls intended physics. so excited! yalls think it would be hard to switch physics to engineering physics cus i lwky didnt even know they had engineering physics lmao
Congrats! My son is the same! We’re from PA.
Is there a Facebook UCBerkeley family or parent group? I see a few but don’t know which one is the more ‘official’ one. Can someone from Berkeley link the best one? The ones I’ve seen aren’t very active at all compared to the other college groups I’ve been in. Thanks!
I just got into berkeley and will most likely be attending but dont plan on depositing until closer to May 1st. If I dont commit until later will this affect my housing options as it seems you can register for housing the day after accepting? Also what is the most common roomate selection/finding service?
Hi! I just got into society and enviornment at berkeley and I am planning on attending. The one worry I have is the more science based classes, as I am very interesting in enviornmental policy and law but have had a really bad high school foundation in basic high school science classes. I know S&E is more humanity focused, but how much science should I expect in comparision to other majors?
I don’t think I have ever come across an “official” Cal FB group. There is usually one started for each class by Humans of University - many parents do join, but I know some also avoid that. Sometimes parents start their own group for Cal Class of [whatever] - which you could even do yourself, if you’d like to start connecting with other parents of incoming freshman.
My d’s year, I know a lot of students looked for roommates on Instagram. Someone started a class group and people posted their interests, habits, etc. to try to connect with someone compatible.
I don’t believe so.
Likely very little, if you so choose. The CNR (and L&S for that matter) breadth requirements do include a bio science class and a physical science class, but there are a ton of choices (or if you’ve taken AP or dual enrollment, you may not have to take them).
In terms of the major itself, there is an “environmental science” requirement, but you can also choose “environmental issues” to fulfill that requirement, which is less science-y (although there’s a little science).
I would strongly recommend you reach out the CNR peer advisors - they can tell you their experiences with specific classes and give you their recommendations based on your interests.
Switching to the College of Engineering is possible, but not guaranteed. Change of college - Berkeley Engineering
Is there a reason you feel that Engineering Physics would be a better fit for you? My son thinks that the whole point of Engineering Physics is that it’s a more convenient way for engineering students to double major in Physics. It’s similar to the L&S Physics major, other than the breadth requirements (because they are in different colleges).
Hello! There really isn’t one. My daughter is finishing up her first year at Cal and I searched in vain for an active group last year. There is a FB group, but it’s not very active—compared with parent groups for other schools.
If you have specific questions—please feel free to ask.
Your housing is not affected by when you commit. Everyone who commits by 5/1 goes into a lottery. If you have the chance to go to an Admitted Students event—either at Cal or your hometown, definitely do it! They explain the process really well.
You basically get four choices and your fifth choice is “any room and building.” You will definitely get something. My daughter is in a mini suite in Christian Hall in Unit 2. The room is really nice. The building is as well. Lots of students have made room tour videos and there are videos of every residence hall has a video tour on the Cal website.
She was also offered housing for next year, but we are renting an apt instead. As long as you pay attention to deadlines and follow directions, housing doesn’t seem to be an issue! There are lots of furnished apartments, close to campus, that are comparable to the dorm, in price.
My daughter and her friends found roommates on the app: “Bunky.” It used widely (among girls anyway) at UCLA and Cal. She said it’s a curated list of potential roommates, based on multiple factors.
My son is a junior at Cal and chose to go with a random roommate freshman year. He met 3 guys in his first year suite who have become great friends and chose to get an apartment off campus for three years.
Thanks- that is surprising there is no active parents group. Other colleges (UCs too) have the most active and helpful parent groups. But thanks for letting me know so I don’t continue searching!
Can you share the set up of the mini-suite your daughter is in?
hi everyone, I realized today that I accidently reported the wrong score for one of my exams (I reported a 5 instead of a 4)… I called the office and they told me to submit a form and they would take it back to the committee to see if my offer still stands or it will be revoked. my question is what’s the likelihood that my admission will be revoked entirely? I entirely did not mean to report the wrong score, I just remembered it wrong…
Highly unlikely UCB will rescind for 1 error on your AP exam score.
This one is run by Berkeley parents.
She is in Unit #2, Christian Hall. She is in a double and shares a bathroom with a triple, so it’s 5 girls sharing one bathroom.
Here’s a pic from her move-in day.
hmm, yea i also saw that engineering physics is often coupled with another minor like eecs of some sort. i guess it would be very appealing to pursue EP as i could gain engineering courses alongside a physics degree, as i enjoy physics but dont neccesarily see myself just in academia and possibly work in tech. however id also be concerned if EP would be much less rigorous than l&s physics since its less in depth and math-heavy based on my research
Question for @gumbymom or others in the know. Does UC Berkeley waitlist or reject applicants during the February early notification cycle for freshman applicants, or is it only early admits who hear in February?
