UC Berkeley Class of 2029 Official Discussion Thread

I am not sure what you mean by “full time offer”? Sciences Po applicants have been admitted during the early admit decisions in February.

Do they admit from all majors? What are the profiles or early admits like (I asked this before on Reddit and I didn’t get any real/quantifiable answers…)?

I’m not 100% sure I understand your question, but dual degree applicants can’t get into Sciences Po without getting into Berkeley, but you CAN get into UCB without getting into Sciences Po. (And, you CAN just forego the Sciences Po part of the offer and just go to Berkeley for four years if you would rather just get a single degree.) From what I understand, applicants will have admissions decisions with the early UCB admits. So, like this week or next.

Yes, they admit from all majors and there is no specific profile for early admits other than they are considered top applicants by UC Berkeley. These admits are selected to interview for Regents/Chancellor scholarships and there are admits to specific programs like MET, GMP, Sciences Pro, HAAS etc…

Yes, I was wondering if a dual degree offer was always accompanied by a 4-year offer and if both came at the same time in Feb. Thanks.

Yes for the Berkeley SPO dual degree program, if you get in, you are automatically also allowed to just go to Berkeley.
And admission is in February from what they said at their webinar.

Alright thank you!

any signs of decisions for MET or scholarship ?

no email but if you check the portal it’s out!

First college acceptance! SPO dual degree acceptance came in an email ~45 minutes afterwards which was a little confusing.

is met out?

The small number of Feb early responses are.

So are there still MET acceptances in March or is it that you are now only considered for engineering if you didn’t get accepted yesterday?

Were any of you admitted yesterday and notified that you are a candidate for the Regents scholarship?

This was posted in the Portal Astrology discussion and I have moved it to this discussion. I figured seasoned posters especially @worriedmomucb can answer the questions better than myself.

Hi all,

I just got my notice that I was admitted to Cal, with an opportunity for the “Regents’ and Chancellor’s Scholarship” interview. Still freaking out a bit, but I’ve calmed down a bit now. Would anyone be able to explain how the interview works? I’ve understood that I need to wear business attire, but can’t find any other info.

Questions:

  • How competitive is getting in early like this? @Gumbymom stated 1-2% in thread, is that of all applicants or of admits?
  • Does anyone have experience with these kinds of interviews? I have come to understand this is not like “normal” college alumnus interviews.
  • How many people end up getting the scholarship?

Thank you in advance!

I don’t believe you need to wear business attire, but you want to dress nicely. I think my daughter wore a dress, but nothing very formal. The interview is pretty laid back. You arrive and there are other candidates along with some current regents students. There are some snacks laid out and you’re encouraged to socialize a bit. Then the interview is one-on-one with a faculty member. It’s pretty straightforward, no tricks, no hard questions. It’s really more of a conversation about your interests and what your various plans would be in you attended. You also have an opportunity to ask questions. My daughter found the process enjoyable.

Also be on the lookout for an invitation to the regents overnight program. Attend if you can - it’s a lot of fun (that’s also how my daughter met her future roommate).

Thanks, I don’t read the astrology thread.

@SunSteel, my student interviewed for Regents in Feb 2020 just before everything shut down so I think things were different back then.

@worriedmomucb has a student who interviewed more recently and is attending Cal as a Regents Scholar.

We live in southern California. For my student, the interview was in the ballroom of a hotel in Orange County. The student checked in and went into a holding room with several round banquet tables. Each table had a couple of Cal honors students (can’t remember if they were all Regents) and several applicants. I don’t know what role the honors students played in the interview process, but my student seemed to think that they were paying attention to who was engaged, who was indifferent, etc.

When it was my student’s turn to be interviewed, they went to a separate room with a professor in a department similar to their chosen major. In my student’s case, the professor’s interests were very different than my student’s. They got along well enough but didn’t really click. I’ve heard of other interviews where the students and the professors were great fits so YMMV.

A couple weeks after the interview, there was an honors weekend where students could stay in the dorms with a Regents scholar and learn more about the program. It was March 7-8 2020. After much debate, our family made the decision that it was not a smart idea to fly and stay in a college dorm while COVID was spreading. The event took place as planned and the following day Berkeley suspended in person classes.
