UC Berkeley Conditions

Hi! I recently got accepted as a Fall Freshman for UCB engineering 2018. My conditions state that i will “earn no grade lower than a C for any individual courses”. In one term, i earned a D+ on Physics since i was really off balance by my Uncles death. Does this condition mean that i have to end the school year with a C in physics or does me not obtaining it in one term automatically rescind me?In Physics, I have an A- for the first term, D+ Second Term, and A+ Third term( as of now). Please help me out as I’m so worried that an individual grade will ruin my hopes of attending UCB. If i go to submit an update form, the option is “have earned/will earn a grade of D or lower in a senior year course”. Does this apply to the year as a whole or an individual term?
Side question: Do my AP exam results that i obtain this term affect my admission?

Does your transcript show all three grades or only the year end grade? If the D+ shows up on your transcript, then you will need to contact UCB and have them determine if this grade is an issue. Schools do not like to rescind, so they will review your circumstances on a case by case basis.

AP exams will not affect your provisional admission but if you do not pass or take the exams, you do not get the college credit.

A D in Physics for engineering school. That’s a red flag. The UC is very serious about rescinding acceptance. Try to bring grade up to C.
Your uncle’s death is sad but it’s not relevant to your academic progress.

My transcript shows the end of year grade only, which is projected to be around an A- or B+. I’m pretty sure the D wont show up on my transcript. I had an A- for the first term, D+ second term and A+ this term. It was just an odd one out since i wasnt in a good mental state.

@Gumbymom Im just not sure if i should tell them or not since the wording of the conditions is really off.

@coolweather My grades are fine it was just a one-off thing. My school runs on a trimester schedule so Im projected to get an A- total: A- for term one, D+ Term 2, and a A+ term 3.

If your D+ does not show up on the transcript, then you should be fine. They are going to review your final transcript for discrepancies so if you pass the course at the end of the year with a C or higher, then everything is good. My son’s HS gave out quarter grades but these were not listed on their transcript, only the 2 semester grades.

Best of luck.

So should i just not mention it then? I just dont want to ruin my chances by telling them something they wouldnt have asked for either way, but I’m also worried they might rescind me later after Ive rejected all other offers. The thing worrying me about telling them is that they might dismiss my Uncles passing as “another unrelated sob-story” when in all honesty i was so depressed and off- balane i couldnt focus at all. @Gumbymom

@Gumbymom If i do not do well on my AP exams its fine then as far as the conditions go?

Yes, if you do not pass your AP exams you will not be rescinded, you just do not get the college credit for those courses at UCB but definitely try your best.

Thank you so much cor your help! @Gumbymom But just to clarify, you think i shouldnt volunteer the info?

Have you looked at your official transcript? Order one to see how it looks. Many schools show grades on transcript for each trimester or quarter. In your case A-, D, and B (or A) for the same subject would not be terrible but I am not sure how UCB thinks. My D’s school shows grades for each quarter (4x4 schedule, one class per semester).

@LedHeadXIIIIIIII: If you transcript does not show the D+ then I would not volunteer the information. As @coolweathr stated above, make sure your transcript does not show this grade. If so, then you would need to contact UCB, if not then you should be fine. Each school reports grades on their transcripts differently, so please verify how your HS does their grade reporting. As I stated above, my son’s HS sends quarter grades home, but they are not posted on their HS transcript only the 2 final semester grades. What is on your final transcript is what will matter to UCB.

I checked with my HS counsellor, my school only shows the end of year grades. @Gumbymom @coolweather Thank you so much for your help! Anyways, when i try to accept the offer, it says i should abide by the initial conditions, so i think in good. Thank you so much for your help- both of you! I’ll work extra hard now since my finals are coming up and I’ll keep you posted

Best of luck to your success at UCB.

@Gumbymom out of curiosity, was your son admitted and chose to attend UCB? If so why did he pick it out of his other choices?

Neither of my son’s applied to UCB.

One son chose UCD out of the 5 UC’s he was accepted and was very happy there. My other son was a good student whom over challenged himself but did not get the A’s he needed for several of his AP classes so his GPA was a stumbling block for the UC’s since he wanted to major in computer science. He applied to a few UC’s got into UCR but mainly concentrated on the CSU’s. He will be graduating this May from SDSU as a CS major which was a great choice for him.

Although I have no student at UCB, I do know the UC system pretty well so that is why I do comment on these threads but I am always willing to learn from current students and posters and try to be helpful to newbies. My niece was in a similar situation with a bad grade in AP Calculus AB a few years ago, but she pulled out a C in the end.

They’re lucky to have such a mom helping them out!
And your niece, did she pull a C as in her total calculus average or did it never drop below a C for a semester? And since you know the system well, do you think that in the odd chance they ask about individual grades, theyll understand my circumstances given that my scores have always been A+’s?
Im so sorry for bombarding you with so many question- i genuinely am. I’m just so stressed and feel so anxious since UCB has always been my dream school.

My niece’s HS does quarter grades also but not reported on the final transcript. She had an F on her 3rd quarter grade report and pulled out a C by 2nd semester end.

On your provisional admission contract, UCB should state what they expect of you as an admitted student. Since you have been accepted, you should only have your final HS transcript to be submitted along with your AP score report. There should be no reason for them to be asking for grades that are not officially posted on your transcript at this point.

Also the UC’s do not consider +/- so an A+ is an A and a C- is a C. Continue to do well the rest of your Senior year and everything will be fine.

Thank you so much! I’ll do my best on the AP’s, but the score won’t matter like you said, right?
