UC Berkeley Fall 2020: Transfer Waitlist Thread

anything guys???

I guess we should know in a couple of hours.

LOL - is anyone else thinking that fall might all just be online again because of the spike in covid cases? o.o

UCB Reps just said that they will continue pulling off from the wait-list until the end of the month. They also said Berkeley notifies students once the waitlist closes but the waitlist may not close until June 30th.

We are all going to have to be patient. It’s likely that we won’t hear of anything until the end of June, whether that’s being admitted or the waitlist being closed.

I don’t want to be all gloomy but this means the closer we get to June then the smaller our chances of getting in are. I’m honestly surprised because all my counselors (even a UCB Rep back in April) were expecting there to be a surge of students accepted off the wait list this year because of Covid. While this caused some schools like UCLA and UChicago to accept tons off the waitlist , it’s entirely possible that UCB decided the opposite and is reducing the movemement off the waitlist because of Covid.

I’m gonna keep watching ATLA for the rest of the month to help me chill out lol.

Yeah lol, this is unfortunate nearly every other top school has been pulling massive amounts off the waitlist besides Cal lol. I was told by a rep who did zoom calls with students that this year would be one of the best years to be on the waitlist and to expect a large number of students to get admission offers. I wonder whats going on behind the scenes.

thanks for the info - guess we are all hoping for a wave this week. its getting rough to keep going longer since for the other universities, they are asking to pay orientation fees, housing fees, etc
so making all of us wait is quite pricey.

Yes, I think there will be gradual increases but a spike after summer ends especially in October/November they will cancel everything but they will have gotten a lot more revenue vs just closing campus. I don’t think any university will be back to normal until we have a vaccine that has been distributed to many millions of people. that may not even be done until the end of Spring 2021.

@“UCLA22CogSci/LINGCS” - ur sentence about that rep saying “students that this year would be one of the best years to be on the waitlist and to expect a large number of students to get admission offers.” just gave me so much hope cuz i keep checking my email HOPING FOR SOMETHING
 lol

@heyigotnoclue

All the UCs who have announced plans for Fall 2020 have said that the Fall will be hybrid leaning towards online. I figure the majority of classes (~75%) will be online and only labs and a select few other classes will be in person. I honestly hope that they figure out a way to offer labs online. This solves the issue of some people having to pay for housing even though the only in person class they have is a lab once or twice week.

Keep in mind this was at the end of April and the person could have given me BS, I think if that was the case we would be seeing what UCLA waitlist applicants are seeing. I personally think they are just going to purposefully under enroll Cal '22.

But they said similar stuff in 2019 and 2018

@“UCLA22CogSci/LINGCS”

The exact same thing happened to me.

A lot has changed since April though. Considering it’s already mid-June and there has been little movement I’m guessing that the situation was just misjudged.

Isn’t it obvious by now that most Reps are just PR people in the case of final admission? I’m sure they are very useful on other things but looking at the inconsistency from all the posts of this entire thread of what a representative have told us, it’s almost always turn out not true, or they are doing an “educated guess”. C’mon just look at all the early week posts where they tell us it’s coming next week or this weekend. Feels like their goal is to make sure we don’t drop from the opt in, in case berkeley DOES ever need to pull a 3 or 4 people assuming the worst. I mean just look at the facts from reading the past posts. NONE of the live chat or personal emails have been right. It’s all just PR “it’s coming, wait another week or by end of the month” Every thread in the past students believe this year is different. And outside of Corona and looking at how UC Berkeley had done waitlist admissions this year, it’s the exact same as 2018 with 1 wave and representatives urging that it’s soon. All the way to the end of the month where you get the rejection. READ the past threads like I have and this thread logically.

I try to think I have been optimistic when it started, but I can also see the same patterns and writings on the wall. For UCLA this year is different. For UCD this year is different. That has been apparent since the START of the month. Nothing outside of a delayed, small first wave has sent any implication that UCB, looking purely at how they conducted this year, implies change of the results 2 years ago. Especially if they say it may come near the 25th or 28th? That’s basically end of the month. With the rep I just was told it that while there is a minor chance deadline has been pushed, at this time there is no plans to do so. That is so different from the other rep report on the past thread. If there were many actual trickling waves by now sure I would believe it. But we are almost 2/3 in and NO Pattern has showed that at all.

I do think that the majority of spots have been taken. The people getting accepted recently are probably the slow trickle of people taking spots of people who got in off the waitlist and chose not to attend.

UCB won’t close the waitlist officially until June 30th though because not everyone accepts off the waitlist right away. Say someone gets accepted off the waitlist today. They will have until the 23rd to accept the decision. Say they decide not to go and decline the waitlist at the last minute. Now UCB has to admit a new person off the waitlist and they must then wait until June 30th to know for sure whether that spot if filled or not.

There is still a chance of being accepted though because people do reject waitlist offers. I’m still gonna check my emails everyday and check the portal every 6pm. However, I know that the chances of getting in now are pretty slim.

Edit: I also think that the chances of a big wave coming are close to 1%. The biggest wave of admissions already came out on June 9th. The first wave of admissions is ALWAYS the biggest one. It makes no sense to postpone the big wave of admissions until late June. That gives students no time to accept the waitlist and it gives UCB no time to replace those that rejected the waitlist offer.

Yes, the guess is bad but reasonable. We can only pray and expect good things happen for us

a better way to gauge things might be to look at the freshman thread
if they arent even accepting any FRESHMAN applicants off the waitlist
well, we better start looking somewhere else lol

@heyigotnoclue

That is a really good point.

I’m sure there will still be a few people accepted off the waitlist but I have to figure that the vast majority of spots are already taken.

I hope you all enjoy wherever it is you guys end up going. At least we won’t have to pay ~1000$ solely for a bedroom! lol Feels bad though, UCB was my top school.

@ShmopyShoj - imma go look them up and get back to y’all

im desperately trying to get off the waitlist for haas. ;-;
