But I hear they overerolled frosh. They definitely admitted fewer transfers this year. It is not accurate to compare frosh admission wl transfers admission
not the best news after looking at the ucb waitlist for freshmen…apparently a few got emails a week ago saying that they got deferred from the waitlist (whatever that means) and emails saying to wait till end of june when spaces become available…
my theory is UCB sent out that announcement yesterday on June 15th…that means once that announcement is sent, some students who do not like online or want to stay at home may choose to not enroll or defer…
in theory, spaces SHOULD be available for transfers and freshmen. However, with some of the global programs for freshman being canceled, UCB loses out on so much money (someone said it was like 2 mil at least) which means that UCB is also losing out on housing fees, on campus activity fees…
in terms of business - the logical thing to do would be for UCB to follow in UCLA footsteps and enroll more students as it will be online but students will still be paying the tuition fees. however, then they would face an issue when COVID is over as then in the next two years, there could be the issue of over-enrollment (which will not impact transfers for THIS year) but definitely impact admissions for future years (estimated around incoming 2026+).
if berkeley takes the under enrollment stance, it means that they are playing it safe for issues of future over-enrollment which has its pros and cons.
another theory that ive noticed that there have been things posted by UCB that makes it sound that they are none too happy about being dethroned as the TOP public uni in the country, if they do OVER ENROLL and give more space for freshmen and transfers, they could decrease their acceptance rate which pushes them as more competitive than UCLA and could potentially be a way to improve their rankings for the next few years…
ok im done ranting lol - im going down a worm hole ROFL
If they admitted few transfer students for 2022 then in my mind that signals that UCB is planning to lower the total amount of transfer students accepted. Like what @“UCLA22CogSci/LINGCS” is saying, UCB might be planning to under enroll for 2022 and instead increase admissions for next year when everything is much clearer.
The fact that UCB under enrolled in the regular admissions is not a good sign that they plan to accept more off the waitlist.
Sorry guys, that’s from live chat today:
“-Hello, i was wondering if you knew when the next wave of appeal acceptances will be released?
-@Sarah, all decisions will be final by the end of the month. There likely wont be many more decisions released unfortunately.
-@cameron so no more appeal acceptances? Or no more waitlist acceptances? Asking about transfers.
-@Yessenia again all students waitlists and appeal will be informed by end of June. If you already submitted an appeal or are on the waitlist there will still be some students who are released off of it.
But no new appeal requests will be accepted”
I was hoping I will be able to appeal after waitlist decisions released. Not going to happen I guess.

I appreciate you doing that for us! It does seem like there is a ton of speculation and conjecture on what is gonna happen this year.
It seems our biggest hope right now is that some people get upset by the decision to go online/hybrid this year and that causes people to defer or rescind their admission. That would then open up spots for people on the waitlist.
@mimininja
What scares me most about this response is the “some” they used to describe students getting off the waitlist/appeal. I submitted my appeal in April and the wait is killing me
Also, was there already a wave of appeal decisions? According to last year’s appeal thread for transfers, people found out June 18th I think.
So it does look like the majority of waitlist spots are already taken up. This explains why so little movement has been happening off the waitlist recently and also why waitlist students are being offered into Spring 2021 instead of the fall semester.
I’m gonna get started sending out transcripts now to my other school. I’m still gonna be refreshing this site daily on the off-chance one of us gets in but yeah it ain’t looking good now.
Good luck to you all wherever you decide to go!

I want to appeal as well if I am not lucky enough to get off the list.
I wanted to be sure if I will be able to appeal myself and have just asked them:
“-Hello! I have a question. Earlier in this chat it was said: “If you already submitted an appeal or are on the waitlist there will still be some students who are released off of it. But no new appeal requests will be accepted”. Does it mean that transfer students who are not accepted off the waitlist will not be able to appeal?

Thank you”
Too sad.

ooooooo, this is fascinating because they usually never ADMIT to have no more acceptances so that’s quite interesting. eh - i guess we should wait out this week and see…
Last year no one got in off the appeals or waitlist. The year before that few people got in off the waitlist and much fewer students got in off the appeals.
Generally the number of students admitted off the waitlist dwarfs the amount of students admitted off appeals. It seems as if WL students get priority over appealed students, which makes sense in how Uni’s handle admissions.
Considering that it seems as if very few people will be admitted off the WL this year, then I’m guessing a very small amount if any will be admitted off the appeals this year. I reason this because the majority of people on the wait-list haven’t been admitted and generally most people on the wait-list have priority over the students who appealed.
@ShmopyShoj I have just asked them, I think it’s still in the live chat. They will not allow waitlist students to appeal this year. If we are not accepted off the waitlist - that’s it.
Just saw that. That is very interesting. Correct me if I’m wrong but in all of the past years they have let waitlisted students submit an appeal right? If they don’t let waitlist students submit an appeal this year then I have to guess most or all the spots are filled now.
UCB is probably just leaving the waitlist open until June 30th to replace anyone who rescinds their offer on the last second, like @harryjackson1 was saying
I really thought we all had a really good shot in getting off the waitlist since so many people got in UCLA off the waitlist. I saw that a lot of them said that they were going to go there instead of Berkeley. I just can’t believe we never even got a wave.
I asked this in private chat:
Hello. Sorry to be repeating the same question over and over again but I just need some clarification. Has there been any “waves” yet of people getting off the waitlist? if not, will there be any? or are there very few spots open and they will be offered individually?

there will be a small group of students released. to be honest I do not know how large it will be.
I love the UCLA handled admission this year. A high amount of wait-list movement is nice to see especially when the school is competitive. It actually incentives students to apply for the waitlist/appeals and to get another chance in the admission process. The admission process has it’s fair amount of funkiness so getting an actual second chance is encouraging.
It’s really disappointing to see schools accept a lot on the waitlist only to barely utilize it. This is 2 years in a row now that Berkeley has neglected the wait list. Seems like there is little incentive to even applying for it. If I’d known how little movement there was gonna be off the waitlist this year I would have rather gotten rejected back in April so I could move on earlier. Waiting until the end of June for an official announcement is waaaay too late. There would be no housing left. Most roomates would already be taken.
I understand that UCB hasn’t officially closed the waitlist because of the off chance that some people rescind offers in the last minute, but they definitely should be a lot clearer on their waitlist process. Last year they accepted no one off the transfer waitlist and it took them until June 18th to officially announce it. That is ridiculously late since they knew by June 1st that the WL wouldn’t be utilized.

The guy whose yellow box disappeared~
@ShmopyShoj Yeah yikes about this whole thing, but I appreciate your analysis. On the flip side, where does everyone plan on going when/if this falls through? I’m a physics major, so UCSB would be the next best choice.
@givmethemail you can’t appeal a waitlist rejection.
@ShmopyShoj
I am not sure if they allowed to appeal if student was rejected off the waitlist, but I’ve seen people writing they did it. Honestly, it feels now that it would be much better to be rejected without waitlist from the beginning and appeal, because I’ve seen much more people this year getting in this way. I wish I’d apply to UCLA as well. It would be extremely difficult for me to relocate, but at least I wouldn’t be wasting so much time. I am already 26, and with such admission trends I’ll graduate after 30.
